# Herringbone stripe bench cushions for a teak balcony bench that seats a crowd

*Callum opens three letters about backs, deadlines and cost, then reads a striped seat-and-back set on a balcony bench built for company.*

> **The quick answer:** To seat more people well on an outdoor bench, give it a separate back cushion slightly thinner than the seat, so the seat keeps its full depth and guests can lean back. Here a brown and cream herringbone stripe in outdoor acrylic runs level across both pieces, self piping keeps the edges quiet, and fabric ties hold the set on a windy teak balcony.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can you make a channel backrest of vertical rolls for a corner banquette and fix it with hook-and-loop strips?

**The workshop's answer:** Foam alone won't hold as a fixed channel backrest. It has to be upholstered onto a thin wooden board, and the board is then fixed to the banquette. The seat can come in several pieces, with firm foam at least 2 in (5 cm) thick.

**A common question:** I'm ordering for a party this weekend. Can you promise the cushion arrives in time?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop does its best and upgrades late orders to expedited shipping, but a run of orders can push dates back. Once, the covers were ready but the foam came late from the factory; the cushion missed a birthday party, and the shop gave a partial refund. Leave room before the event.

**A common question:** What would a custom window seat cushion around 74 x 18 in cost?

**The workshop's answer:** It is quoted from the size, fabric and filling. The workshop quoted a beige 74 x 18 in (188 x 46 cm) seat and a 21 1/4 x 78 3/4 in (54 x 200 cm) one individually. When a buyer offered a much lower figure, the shop declined, because it uses top-quality fabric and filling. Installments are available.

## Two boxes on one teak bench, and why they differ

Two cushions on one teak bench, and they are not the same thickness. The back is a separate box, a little slimmer than the seat, resting against the slats. That is the whole hosting trick of this [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) set: the seat keeps its full depth, so a guest who leans back is leaning on the back cushion, not stealing inches from the seat.

The cloth is a brown, cream and taupe herringbone stripe in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), code 990. The stripes run level on both pieces, and seen from the side they line up as one continuous pattern, as if a single length of cloth climbed the wall. Self piping keeps the box edges quiet. Up here a contrast cord would only argue with the view.

Now the weather. The light is flat and overcast, the kind that makes a bright color look tired by late summer. Muted browns hold up on an exposed seat where bright color would fade. Weathered teak has gone gray and picks up the taupe; the terracotta roofs below repeat the warm stripe. The thin metal railing adds a line and nothing else, which is what a railing should do.

There are no throw pillows, and that is deliberate. On a high balcony, anything loose ends up in the street. Every prop here is working: the slatted back holds the back cushion, the armrest frames the ties, the rooftops set the palette.

How many guests does your bench need to hold on a good night, friend? Start from that number, then work it through the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/). More open-air benches live under [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) and in the [balcony corner bench](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/balcony-corner-bench-cushions/) sketches.

## Pinned by Callum: the rooftop bench

Five pins, from the slim back cushion down to the ties that keep it on the slats.

1. **Back cushion**: A separate, slightly thinner box rests against the slats.
2. **Seat cushion**: The seat keeps its full depth for sitting.
3. **Fabric ties**: Ties hold both pieces on a windy, exposed balcony.
4. **Teak armrest**: Gray teak blends with the brown herringbone.
5. **Rooftop view**: Terracotta roofs repeat the warm stripe tones.

## Seating a crowd on one outdoor bench

- ✓ A back cushion slightly thinner than the seat, made as its own box, so every guest keeps the full seat depth.
- ✓ Ties on both pieces. Guests stand up and sit down all evening, and wind finds every gap over a railing. Rain doesn't negotiate either.
- ✓ Stripes that run level across seat and back, so a full bench still reads as one piece of furniture.
- ✓ A muted stripe for an exposed seat, since bright color shows fading first.
- ✓ On long storage benches, backs in two pieces that lift off fast when someone needs the lid.
- ✓ Size the back against the seat with the [back cushion height Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-height-sizing/), and the ties with the [anti-slide Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/).

## Fluffy pillows versus a storage lid

A welcome center in the US wrote to the workshop about a leather lift-up storage bench under a window. Giant fluffy pillows lived on it. They took up the seat, and every time someone needed the storage, the pillows had to come off first.

They asked for a slim backrest for the 76 in (193 cm) bench, filling the 14 in (36 cm) between the seat and the window, ideally fixed to the wall with [hook-and-loop tape](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#hook-and-loop-tape). The workshop agreed to the backrest and made it as two separate half-length pieces, so one person can lift one off without unloading the bench. It declined the wall mounting.

A public bench hosts guests every day of the week. The lesson travels home unchanged: on a lift-up bench, split backrests that come off quickly beat a pile of loose pillows. The [storage bench Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) covers the lid side of it.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a windy balcony bench, ask for fabric ties on the back cushion as well as the seat, so both stay put when guests get up.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should an outdoor bench back cushion be thinner than the seat?

Usually. Here the back is a separate, slightly thinner box resting against the slats, so the seat keeps its full depth for sitting. A back as thick as the seat would push everyone toward the front edge.

### Why choose a muted stripe for an exposed balcony bench?

Bright color shows fading first on a seat that takes the full weather. A brown, cream and taupe herringbone blends with gray teak and terracotta roofs, so the set keeps looking settled through the season.

### Where do ties go on a seat-and-back bench cushion set?

On both pieces. Seat ties hold the cushion to the bench, and back cushion ties hold it to the slats. On a windy, exposed balcony, the back cushion needs ties as much as the seat does.

### Can a long bench backrest come in two pieces?

Yes. For a 76 in (193 cm) storage bench, the workshop made the backrest as two half-length pieces, so each lifts off quickly when the lid needs to open.
