# A heathered gray window seat cushion, outlined in ochre piping

*Pull up a chair. Three buyer questions come first, then a gray window seat built for two readers, with one thin gold line holding the whole set together.*

> **The quick answer:** Choose contrast piping for a window seat cushion when the body fabric is a plain solid like heathered gray, because it outlines every edge in a second color. Choose self piping for prints and none for corduroy or very thin pads. Piping costs nothing extra and sits on the seam, so it never changes the size you order.

## Stripes, templates and a very long seat

**A common question:** Can I choose which way the stripes run, or the lines on corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Stripes and corduroy wales can run horizontally or vertically, on the top and on the side bands, to match a photo you send; say so in the order. The production team checks for technical limits and picks the best-looking option if a direction can't be done.

**A common question:** How do I measure a trapezoid window seat? Do I need a template?

**The workshop's answer:** A simple drawing with every edge measured is enough, and a photo of the seat helps. The workshop can send example templates and a past order drawing to copy. Pick depth and length ranges for pricing only, say 28 in deep and 88 in long, then upload your drawing; the trapezoid order asks for it at checkout.

**A common question:** My window seat is 29 in deep and 122 in long. Can you make it in two or three pieces?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For a 29 x 122 in (74 x 310 cm) seat, the workshop made two tufted linen cushions of 29 x 61 in (74 x 155 cm) each, with the fabric chosen by color number. The order shipped the next day and delivery took 3 to 5 days.

## What a thin ochre line does for a gray seat

On a plain gray seat, the [piping](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) is the only drawing you get. Here it is ochre, a shade warmer than camel, and it runs around the seat, both backrests and both pillows in one unbroken color. Gray alone can look like a rainy afternoon. Give it a gold edge and it looks like a place somebody meant to sit.

The fabric is a heathered [linen-look weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) with a tweedy fleck that reads well in clear daylight. The jute rug below suits that fleck.

Each end has an angled backrest with a smaller pillow in front of it, so two readers can sit with their backs to the side walls and their faces to the window. The seat runs the full length of the cabinet, well past the window opening, so there is legroom for both, or for one person stretched out in the free middle. Who sits in yours, one reader or two? For [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) in a [reading nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/), this end-to-end layout is the one to borrow.

The mug and books sit on a side shelf beyond the cushion. Coffee stays off the fabric that way, neighbor, and anybody who has raised children knows why.

## Pinned around the nook

From the ochre edge at the front to the jute rug under the cabinets.

1. **Ochre contrast piping**: Ochre is warmer than camel and gives gray a little more life.
2. **Angled end backrest**: The sloped back lets you lean at an angle while still facing the window.
3. **Piped gray pillow**: Pillows that match the backs make the set feel ordered rather than collected.
4. **Mug and books on the side**: A shelf beyond the cushion keeps drinks off the fabric.
5. **Jute rug below**: Natural fiber underfoot suits the tweedy fleck of the fabric.

## Self, contrast or no piping on a heather gray window seat

| Piping | What it does to the line | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Self, same fabric | A quiet outline; the edge reads as shape, not color | Busy prints and calm rooms |
| Contrast, like this ochre | Draws every edge and ties seat, backs and pillows together | Plain solids such as heathered gray |
| None | A flat, soft edge; the fabric does the talking | Corduroy and very thin pads |

## Two greens that looked like twins on a phone

A buyer wanted a window seat cushion 37.5 x 64 in, 4 in thick, in a forest-green linen. On a small screen, two of the greens looked identical. The workshop sent close-up photos of both, and the buyer picked one, in a single solid color.

When the size option first showed the wrong total, the workshop put the sale price back on. Then it held the parcel, so the cushion arrived after the buyer came home from a trip instead of sitting alone on an empty porch.

## On the cutting table: the heather gray window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat cushion, box edge, full cabinet length |
| Fabric | Linen-look weave, heathered gray with a tweedy fleck |
| Piping | Contrast ochre on seat, backrests and pillows |
| Backrests | Angled, one at each end |
| Pillows | Two gray pillows piped in ochre |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) standard |
| Best for | A reading nook for two, or one reader stretched out |

> Contrast piping draws every edge of a window seat cushion, so it works best on a plain solid; on a busy print, pick self piping in the same fabric.

> **Tailor's margin:** Ochre piping on gray reads warm in daylight. Check any contrast piping color against your own window light, not against a screen.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does piping make a window seat cushion bigger?

No. The cushion is cut to the size you give, and the piping is a fabric-covered cord sewn into the seam line. It outlines the edge without adding anything to the length or the depth.

### Will contrast piping show a slightly wavy line?

It can. A long edge is sewn by hand and may wander a little, and a colored line shows that more than a self-colored one does. On a very long seat, self piping is the more forgiving choice.

### Why repeat the piping color on the pillows?

One piping color on the seat, the backrests and the pillows makes the set read as one piece, ordered rather than collected over the years. Pillows that match the backs also tell the eye where to lean.
