# A harlequin garden bench cushion with a plain navy back, and how to mix patterns outside

*One busy seat, one quiet back, and a backyard of brick and fence boards. A short letter on patterns that have to face the weather.*

> **The quick answer:** To mix patterns on an outdoor bench, let one piece carry the pattern and take the plain piece from its darkest color: here a navy, red and green harlequin seat under one long navy back cushion. Keep the surroundings to textures like brick and timber, and measure a full-width back between the arms, not across the whole bench.

## A letter about one loud seat and one quiet back

Friend,

A harlequin seat is a loud thing to put outdoors. Small diamonds in navy, red, green and white on a teak two-seater. On its own it would shout across the yard.

So the back is plain. One long navy cushion, taken from the darkest diamond in the seat. The eye reads the pattern, rests on the navy, comes back. That is the whole rule for mixing patterns: one print, one plain pulled from it, texture for everything else.

The diamonds are small for a reason. A standard two-seater is short, and big diamonds would be chopped off at the arms. Small ones repeat enough times to look deliberate.

The back fits between the teak arms and rises above the top rail. That turns a stiff bench into somewhere to lounge through a cool gray spring afternoon. Both pieces are [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) with self piping and box edges. Rain doesn't negotiate, so the cloth matters more than the diamonds do.

## Pinned by Callum

Four pins: the navy back, the diamonds, the teak arm and the potted neighbor.

1. **Long navy back**: A single navy back taken from the darkest diamond keeps the print readable.
2. **Harlequin seat**: Small-scale diamonds suit a standard two-seater garden bench.
3. **Teak arm**: The back cushion is cut to fit between the arms, not the overall bench length.
4. **Box ball in terracotta**: Evergreen and clay give the pattern calm neighbors.

## Brick, boards and a box ball: why the neighbors stay plain

Look at what surrounds the bench. Gray timber fence panels. An old red brick wall. A garden shed. Paving slabs underfoot. A box ball in a terracotta pot at the end.

Every one of those is texture, not print. Brick has rhythm without pattern. Fence boards have grain. The box ball is evergreen and round, and its clay pot picks up the red diamonds without repeating them. Calm neighbors give a busy seat room to breathe.

What else in your yard already counts as pattern? A striped umbrella or a tiled tabletop is a second print in the same sightline, and two prints side by side tend to fight. Count them before you order. More [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) show plains to pair with a print, and the [outdoor fabric guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-fabric-acrylic-olefin-polyester/) explains the cloth.

## The bench whose cushion had to climb the arms

One buyer wrote in about an outdoor bench with an odd build: the arms joined straight onto the seat. They wanted one long seat cushion that folded up onto the inside of each arm.

The shop drew it as 75 x 23.5 in (190 x 60 cm) in three sections, 13.75, 47.25 and 13.75 in (35, 120 and 35 cm), with a fold seam at each join so the ends hinge upward. Back cushions were drawn at 17.75 x 23.5 in (45 x 60 cm) each, in an outdoor fabric. In the end the buyer found it more than they expected to spend and did not order.

The idea still holds. Fold seams let one cushion wrap onto the arms of a bench. On a patterned seat, ask how the print will meet at each fold before you commit. The [bench measuring guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/) covers arms and posts.

## Buyer questions: a wall-fixed back, ties between cushions, an L's overall size

**A common question:** Could you make a back section that fixes to the wall behind my banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop can't make a back cushion that is fixed to the wall, but it can make the back cushion itself, and loose pillow-style backs are usually the more practical choice. Send final measurements once the bench is built.

**A common question:** Can two bench cushions be tied together so they don't slide apart?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Ties can be sewn on the ends where the two cushions meet, and on a side so they can be fixed to the seat.

**A common question:** What does the closed-corner L-shaped floor sofa measure overall?

**The workshop's answer:** The whole L-shape measures 79 x 118 in (201 x 300 cm).

> **Tailor's margin:** For a full-width back cushion on a bench with arms, measure between the arms. The overall bench length is the wrong number.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How many patterns can one outdoor bench carry?

One is safest. Put the pattern on the seat, make the back plain in a color from that pattern, and let textures such as brick, timber and clay pots do the rest. Two prints in one sightline tend to fight.

### Should a bench back cushion be taller than the bench back?

On this teak bench it rises above the top rail, which is what turns an upright bench into a place to lounge. Measure from the seat to where you want your shoulders supported.

### Does a small or large pattern suit a two-seater bench?

Small. A standard two-seater is short, and small diamonds repeat enough times to look deliberate, while large ones would be cut off awkwardly at the arms.
