# A greige chenille daybed cushion on a low oak plinth, read for long afternoons

*One deep seat. Two short backs. A fig, a rug, nothing else. I read this oak daybed for the hours people actually spend on it.*

> **The quick answer:** A daybed cushion built for long sitting is one full-length box seat with two half-length back cushions, because split backs can be flipped and plumped separately and wear more evenly than one long piece. Keep the seat slim against the frame, self-pipe it in the same color, and cut a fitted cover slightly under the measured thickness so it sits snug.

![Greige chenille-look box seat and two back cushions on a low solid-oak platform sofa beside a weeping fig](https://cushionguide.com/media/daybed-cushions/greige-chenille-oak-platform-sofa-cushions-1600.webp "A plain greige chenille seat and split back cushions turn a simple oak plinth into a quiet living-room sofa.")

## Low frame, slim seat, long afternoon

The seat is about a fifth as thick as the oak plinth is deep. That one ratio decides the room.

Any thicker and the frame would read as a mattress on boards. At this proportion it stays furniture. One full-length box seat covers the whole deck and stops flush with the front edge, so a clean band of oak shows underneath. Nothing hangs over. Nothing presses the backs of the knees during a long chapter.

The piping is self piping, cut from the same greige chenille. It keeps the edge crisp without adding a line that fights the oak grain. A contrast welt would outline the seat. Here the seat is meant to settle into the limewashed wall, and it does.

Height is a feeling. On a low plinth it feels slower, closer to the floor, suited to a book and a long afternoon. This is a [daybed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/) set for lingering, in a [living room](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/living-room-cushions/) that asks for nothing else.

## Pinned by Hana on the oak daybed

Five marks on the photograph, from the split backs down to the rug under the plinth.

1. **Full-length box seat**: One deep box seat covers the whole oak deck, so the plinth reads as a sofa rather than a bench.
2. **Split back cushions**: Two half-length back pads can be flipped and plumped separately and wear more evenly than one long piece.
3. **Oak plinth edge**: The seat is cut flush to the frame, leaving a band of oak visible as a clean base line.
4. **Weeping fig**: A single tall plant balances the long horizontal line of the sofa.
5. **Flat-weave rug**: The rug's oatmeal tone sits just below the greige chenille so nothing in the room competes.

## Why the back comes in two short pieces

Long sitting is mostly shifting. You read with your shoulders against one pad, then turn and stretch along the seat with your head near the other. Two half-length back cushions allow that.

Each can be flipped and plumped on its own. The side you favor does not carry all the wear. One long back cushion looks neater in a photograph, but it wears where you lean most, and there is nowhere to move that wear.

The cloth is a chenille-look weave from the [jacquard and damask family](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/). Soft daylight crosses it and shows the texture without shine. Greige and warm gray read as one calm surface against the plaster. The flat-weave wool rug sits a shade lower, oatmeal under greige, so nothing competes.

The weeping fig in its stone planter is the only vertical. It stops the long horizontal from running out of the frame. Take it away and the plinth looks like a bench in a waiting room.

How long do you sit in one place on an ordinary Sunday?

A long seat. Two short backs. Room to change position.

## One daybed, two mattresses, two covers

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a trundle daybed: a single mattress on top and a pull-out trundle mattress underneath. She asked for two mattress covers.

The workshop explained that each mattress needs its own cover, and a second cover is a second piece of work, priced as one. They agreed on one cover to start, 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 7 in (90 x 190 x 18 cm), for the top mattress.

It is a small story, and an easy surprise to avoid. The trundle spends most of the week out of sight, so it slips out of the plan. Count the mattresses first. Then plan a cover for every one that will show.

## Daybed and bench questions

**A common question:** Is the cover fabric stretchy? And should a cover for two stacked mattresses be made smaller than what I measured?

**The workshop's answer:** A little, yes. The workshop makes fitted covers slightly under the true thickness so they sit snug. A stack measured at about 8 in (20.5 to 21 cm) got a 7 7/8 in (20 cm) cover, and a 9 1/2 in (24 cm) stack would get 8 3/4 in (22 cm). It only works if the measurement is right, so photograph the tape on each dimension.

**A common question:** What size cushion fits an IKEA Hemnes daybed?

**The workshop's answer:** A standard Hemnes daybed takes a 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm) cushion or mattress. The outside of the wooden frame is larger than that, so don't measure the frame. The workshop confirms the exact size and thickness with you before production.

**A common question:** I want a cushion for an IKEA Kallax bench that matches the storage bins I'm buying. How do I check the colors?

**The workshop's answer:** Order physical samples from the fabric-samples listing and write the fabric codes in the note. If you'd rather not wait for samples, ask the workshop for close-up photos of those fabrics.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cut a fitted daybed cover a little under the measured thickness: a 9 1/2 in (24 cm) mattress stack gets an 8 3/4 in (22 cm) cover.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why split a daybed backrest into two half-length cushions?

Two half-length backs can be flipped and plumped one at a time, so the side you lean on most does not wear alone. They also let two people settle differently on the same daybed, one reading upright, one stretched out.

### How slim should a seat cushion be on a low oak platform?

Slim enough that the frame still reads as furniture. In this photograph the seat is about a fifth as thick as the plinth is deep. A much thicker seat turns a platform into a mattress on boards and hides the wood you paid for.

### Does the pull-out trundle of a daybed need its own cover?

Yes. The top mattress and the trundle mattress each need a separate cover, and each cover is its own piece of work. One buyer started with a single 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 7 in (90 x 190 x 18 cm) cover for the top mattress.

### Is self piping or contrast piping better against a wood-grain daybed frame?

When the frame shows strong grain, self piping in the seat color keeps the edge crisp without adding a line that competes with the wood. Contrast piping outlines the cushion, which suits a plain painted frame better than natural oak.
