# A green stripe lumbar pillow with yellow wide-stripe squares, read through the seasons

*Élodie reads two stripes on one cream ground and shows how a bed can turn with the year by changing covers, not pillows.*

> **The quick answer:** A green stripe lumbar pillow and yellow wide-stripe squares work together because both stripes sit on the same cream ground; put the finer stripe in front and the broader one at the edges. To change the bed with the seasons, keep your inserts and order covers only, sized to each insert and noted with your fabric and piping codes.

## Swatch strip: five colors on one bed

- Meadow green — #5E7F4E — The narrow stripe on the lumbar and the center square
- Butter yellow — #E3C35A — The wide stripe, kept to the outer pair
- Undyed cream — #EFE7D6 — The shared ground that lets two stripes agree
- Dove gray — #A7A9A4 — The painted panel headboard, cool and quiet
- Honey oak — #B9864F — The window frame, the one warm wood in the room

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins, from the green stripe lumbar to the warm wood of the window frame.

1. **Green stripe lumbar**: The narrower green stripe goes in front where fine pattern is seen up close.
2. **Green stripe square**: The square repeats the lumbar stripe to keep the center consistent.
3. **Yellow wide stripe**: The wider yellow stripe is kept to the outer pair, so scale steps up from center to edge.
4. **Shared cream ground**: Both stripes sit on the same cream ground, which is what lets two widths mix.
5. **Wood window frame**: Warm wood at the window balances the cool gray headboard.

## Fine stripe in front, broad stripe behind, and the year turning

My friends, the eye sits down first, and on this bed it sits down on green.

The lumbar pillow in front carries a narrow green and cream stripe, knife-edged, with no piping to interrupt it. Behind it a square in the same stripe holds the center. Then the outer pair steps up in scale: broad butter-yellow stripes, also on cream. The two stripes differ in width and in color, and still they agree, because both are woven on the same cream ground. That shared ground is the whole secret.

Scale grows from the center outward, fine in front, broad behind. Reverse it and the bed looks busy. Keep it this way and it looks arranged.

The dove gray panel headboard is cool and quiet, the gray of a sky just before spring rain. Cream linen on the duvet and the euro shams carries the ground color across the whole bed, so the stripes read as a band of color rather than a scatter. The warm wood of the window frame is the counterweight to all that cool gray.

Now let the year turn. In spring and summer the bed is right as it stands: green like new leaves, yellow like the light at the window. When the days shorten, change the covers, not the pillows. Keep the inserts and the cream ground, let the green lumbar stay, and bring in a deeper stripe for the outer pair. In warm window light the yellow glows; on a gray winter afternoon, it is the lamp you forgot to switch on.

More pairings live among our [lumbar pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/) and in the [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) library, and you can try stripe widths in the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/). Which stripe would you keep all year?

## A bench cushion that wanted company

A buyer wrote in after ordering a bench cushion in fabric 925 with 907 piping. Now they wanted throw pillow covers to match, for inserts they already owned.

The workshop showed them that the zippered cover listing works for throw pillow covers too, quoted the set of eight both as covers only and with foam, and sent a custom order link. The plan settled on eight covers at about 25 x 25 in (63 x 63 cm) and 17 x 17 in (44 x 44 cm), bodies in 911, 906 and 114 with piping in 906, 911 and 920, the codes crossing so each pillow answers another. An earlier plan had been 18 x 18 in and 23 x 25 in.

The lesson is simple: throw pillow covers can be ordered through the cover listing with exact sizes. It is also how a bed changes with the seasons without a single new insert. The [cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/cushion-covers/) page gathers the options.

## On the cutting table: the striped bed

| | |
|---|---|
| Front | Green and cream narrow-stripe lumbar pillow |
| Center | Square in the same green stripe |
| Outer pair | Two squares in a wide yellow and cream stripe |
| Fabric | Striped cotton on a shared cream ground |
| Edge | Knife edge, no piping |
| Behind | Cream euro shams |
| Seasonal change | Covers only, on the inserts you already own |
| Best for | Beds with a quiet painted or upholstered headboard |

## Buyer questions: covers, fillings and corners

**A common question:** I already have inserts. Can I order just the covers, throw pillows included?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Use the zippered cushion cover listing, which works for throw pillow covers too. Write the sizes in the Exact Size field, note that they are pillow covers along with your color and piping codes, and message the workshop after ordering so it is set up correctly. Covers can match your cushions or use any other color on the chart.

**A common question:** Does a covers-only order come with the foam or filling inside?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Covers-only listings have no filling, and the workshop messages each buyer to confirm that covers alone are what they want. Filling, when wanted, is quoted separately.

**A common question:** Why do covers with rounded or angled corners cost more than rectangles, when they use less fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Labor drives the price more than fabric. Every piece is handmade, and rounded or angled corners take noticeably longer to cut and sew than a plain rectangle, so they are priced like trapezoids.

> **Tailor's margin:** Swap covers with the seasons, not pillows: keep the inserts and the cream ground, and change only the outer pair's stripe.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can two different stripes share one bed without clashing?

Yes, when they share a ground color. Here a narrow green stripe and a broad yellow stripe both sit on cream, so the difference in width reads as a plan. Keep the finer stripe in front and the broader stripe behind.

### How do I change bed pillows for the seasons without buying new inserts?

Order covers only, sized to the inserts you have, and swap them as the light changes. Zippered covers come off easily, so one set of inserts can carry a summer palette and a winter one.

### Knife edge or piped edge for a striped lumbar pillow?

A knife edge suits a lively stripe: no cord interrupts the pattern at the seam, and the pillow looks soft and relaxed. Piping adds a crisp outline, which helps more when the stripe is quiet.
