# A leaf-line dining bench cushion that seats the whole table

*A dining bench is the hardest-working seat on a patio. Everybody slides along it and nobody thanks it. Here's how this one earns its keep.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion for an outdoor dining bench should run the full length of the bench in one piece and stay moderately thick, so diners still sit at a sensible height for the table. Measure from the floor to the underside of the tabletop before choosing thickness, and leave thigh room once the cushion is on.

## Pinned by Callum: five points on a covered patio

Five pins, from the leaf-line print along the bench to the lawn and hedge it borrows its green from.

1. **Leaf-line print cushion**: The cushion follows the full length of the bench at a moderate thickness.
2. **Boxed cushion end**: A squared end with self piping keeps the bench outline neat.
3. **Teak dining table**: Keep the seat height right so diners still sit comfortably at the table.
4. **Teak bench leg**: Warm teak and riven stone keep the palette natural around the green.
5. **Lawn and hedge**: The green print picks up the garden beyond the terrace.

## Card one: one long cushion, more people seated

A bench seats more people than chairs do because nobody owns a slot. Guests shuffle down. The cushion has to let them.

This one runs the full length of the teak bench as a single piece. No gap in the middle, no seam that somebody ends up sitting on at the busiest dinner of the summer. The squared, boxed end with self piping keeps the outline tidy where the bench stops, which matters outside, because you see the end of a bench from the lawn.

Thickness is kept moderate. That's the hosting detail most people miss. Put a thick pad on a bench built for a dining table and your guests eat with their elbows up near their chins. Measure from the floor to the underside of the tabletop. Subtract the bench height plus the cushion. What's left is thigh room. The [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) does the arithmetic, and [cushion thickness and table height](https://cushionguide.com/guides/banquette-cushion-thickness-table-height/) explains the trade.

How many people do you actually squeeze onto your bench on a holiday weekend?

## Card two: green and white against teak and stone

The print is a fine green-and-white leaf line, and it picks up the lawn and the beech hedge beyond the patio roof. Outdoors, that's the right move. You don't compete with the view. You repeat it.

Teak and riven stone keep the rest of the palette warm and plain. No pillows, no throws, nothing on the table. The wall lantern is the only prop, and it's up out of the way. When the only pattern is on the cushion and the only grain is in the wood, the picture holds together with nothing else.

The cloth is from the workshop's [outdoor acrylic fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and this bench sits with the other [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/). Even under a patio roof, rain blows in sideways. Rain doesn't negotiate.

## The 84 in cushion that measured short on day one

One buyer wrote in about an 18 1/2 x 84 5/8 x 2 in (47 x 215 x 5 cm) bench cushion. It looked crushed from packing and measured about 1 1/2 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm) short.

The shop explained vacuum packing: the foam is compressed for the trip and needs 4 to 5 days to recover. It asked for one continuous tape-measure video, end to end, and from that the gap came out at up to 1 in (2.5 cm). A partial refund was offered, then a free replacement in a linen with matching piping, still 2 in (5 cm) thick. The buyer liked the new color and quality better and still found it a touch short. The shop explained that vacuum-packed cushions arrive about 3/4 in (2 cm) short and expand, and kept looking into it.

The lesson for long cushions, friend: measure after full recovery, not the afternoon the box lands. [What a vacuum-packed cushion does after unboxing](https://cushionguide.com/guides/vacuum-packed-cushion-first-72-hours/) covers the first days.

## Buyer questions: backs, colors and corner sofas

**A common question:** Can you make back cushions to match my bench or banquette seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Backs are made alongside the seats. A banquette backrest about 98 in (2.5 m) long was made in two pieces filled with shredded foam, and outdoor sets have paired softer 4 3/4 in (12 cm) back cushions with firmer 3 1/8 in (8 cm) seats.

**A common question:** I love the burgundy cushion in one of your photos. How do I find out which fabric it is?

**The workshop's answer:** Send a screenshot and the shop names the fabric code. That matters here: the burgundy has a near twin in maroon on the chart, and one window seat photo pairs a different main fabric with burgundy piping.

**A common question:** Could you build an L-shaped or corner floor sofa with backrests from my own diagram?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One corner sofa drawn as a diagram was broken down into 2 floor cushions, 2 backrests, 4 armrests and 1 corner backrest. An L-shaped daybed with 6 in (15 cm) seats and 5 in (13 cm) backs was also made to order. One side of an L has to be longer to cover the corner.

## On the cutting table: the teak dining bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Full-length dining bench cushion, one piece |
| Fabric | Green and white leaf-line print, outdoor acrylic |
| Edge | Box edge with squared ends |
| Piping | Self piping in the same print |
| Thickness | Moderate, set by the table clearance |
| Back cushions | Optional; softer backs over firmer seats on outdoor sets |
| Long cushions | Measure after 4 to 5 days of recovery |
| Best for | Covered patios and long outdoor dinners |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a vacuum-packed bench cushion after 4 to 5 days, not on unboxing day. Long foam arrives about 3/4 in (2 cm) short.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should an outdoor dining bench cushion be?

Moderate. The cushion adds to the seat height, so check the distance from the floor to the underside of the table first. Too thick a pad pushes diners up toward the tabletop and costs them thigh room.

### Should a long patio bench cushion be one piece?

For dining, one continuous piece avoids a seam where a guest sits and lets people slide along freely. Long pieces arrive vacuum packed, so measure only after 4 to 5 days, once the foam has recovered.

### Why does a green print suit an outdoor bench?

A green-and-white print repeats the lawn and hedges around a patio, so the cushion looks like part of the view. Warm teak and plain stone underneath keep the palette natural and stop the print from feeling busy.
