# A green herringbone custom bench cushion, strapped to limestone and read through four seasons

*Stone gives a cushion nothing to hold on to. So the cushion holds on to the stone.*

> **The quick answer:** On a stone or concrete bench, hold the cushion with fabric straps that wrap under the slab, sized to its thickness, because ordinary ties have nothing to tie to. Choose an outdoor acrylic for sun and rain, keep the cushion inside the slab's outline so the carving shows, and store it indoors for the winter.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** I've already placed the order. Is it too late to change the color or the size?

**The workshop's answer:** Not if you ask early. A switch to yellow was accepted while production was just starting. When a buyer realized they meant 82 in (208 cm), not 62 in (157 cm), the longer cushion was made after an extra-cost payment link.

**A common question:** What's your toughest, easiest-to-clean fabric for seating that takes a beating, like a restaurant booth?

**The workshop's answer:** Velvet. It stands up to high traffic and is the easiest to wipe down and spot-clean by hand. Every cover is removable and machine washable at 86°F (30°C) anyway; velvet simply spot-cleans more easily because of its structure.

**A common question:** How do you price a really long kitchen bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** By the size you select on the listing, even in a special fabric. One cushion ran 21 x 138 5/8 x 2 in (53 x 352 x 5 cm), with double piping and a zipper down the long side. Put the color codes and the zipper note in the personalization box.

## Stone, straps and a stripe the color of olive leaves

Here is a bench that won't negotiate. A rough-hewn limestone slab on stone legs, in a whitewashed courtyard, with limestone paving underfoot and an olive tree in a big terracotta urn. Warm late sun. No slats, no rail, nothing to tie a string to.

So the cushion brings its own grip. Gray fabric straps pass under the slab and come back up, and the box cushion sits snug inside the stone's outline. That last part matters. Let a pad hang over and the carved edge disappears.

The cloth is an outdoor acrylic in a herringbone stripe of sage, lime, teal and cream. On white stone in hard sun, a cool green takes the glare down a notch, and the olive leaves in the urn repeat the sage and lime. The piped top edge draws one clean line against the pale rock. Three colors, one courtyard, no fuss.

Ask for straps on any [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) bound for masonry. The cloth has its own page under [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and more courtyard and porch seats sit under [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/). What is your bench made of, friend?

## Five marks, from stripe to olive

Five pins, from the stripe on top down to the strap and out to the olive tree that repeats it.

1. **Herringbone stripe**: Green and lime herringbone stripes cool the sun-bleached stone.
2. **Wrap-around strap**: Straps pass under the stone slab, the only reliable way to hold a cushion on a smooth masonry bench.
3. **Piped top edge**: A cream welt keeps the pad's outline clean against pale stone.
4. **Stone bench leg**: The cushion stays inside the slab's outline so the carved stone still shows.
5. **Olive in clay urn**: Olive leaves repeat the sage and lime of the stripe.

## The same stone bench, season by season

A courtyard changes more in a year than the bench does. Bring the cushions in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything; until then, here is what they are up against.

| Season | What the courtyard does | What the cushion needs |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Stone holds the night's cold into the morning | A deep box cushion between you and the slab |
| Summer | Hard sun on white walls and pale paving all day | An outdoor acrylic, and a cool stripe that calms the glare |
| Storm days | Wind and rain across an open yard | Straps under the slab, not ties, so it stays put |
| Fall | Leaves and dust from the olive | Covers zipped off and washed at 86°F (30°C) before storage |
| Winter | Frost on bare stone | Indoors and dry until spring |

## The deep seat that had to hold a grown-up

Not every bench lives outside, and not every buyer trusts the word firm. A buyer in the US asked for foam of at least 1.8 lb density with an ILD of 44, so adults would not sink through a deep seat they use every day.

The workshop answered straight. Its 32 kg/m³ foam works out to about 2.0 lb/ft³ and is firm, but it carries no official ILD rating, so nobody promised a number they couldn't back. The cushion was quoted at 25 x 78 x 6 in (63.5 x 198 x 15 cm), and the buyer chose a fabric with matching trim.

Stone slab or daily indoor seat, the lesson travels. Six inches of firm foam is what stands between a grown adult and a hard base.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a stone slab's thickness before you order wrap-around straps. The straps have to pass under the slab and back up to the cushion.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do you keep a cushion on a concrete or stone bench?

Use fabric straps that wrap under the slab instead of ties. Measure the slab's thickness and depth so the straps are long enough to pass beneath it and fasten snugly; on smooth masonry they are the only reliable hold.

### Is a green stripe a good choice for a sunny courtyard?

It suits white walls and pale stone well: a cool green takes the edge off the glare and ties the seat to planting such as olive or lavender. In strong sun, pick an outdoor acrylic rather than an indoor cotton.

### Why doesn't every cushion foam come with an ILD number?

ILD, indentation load deflection, is a lab test of how much force it takes to press foam down, and not every foam is formally rated. The workshop's 32 kg/m³ foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³, is sold as firm without an official ILD figure.

### Should outdoor bench cushions stay out all winter?

No. Frost and months of damp are hard on any cushion. Zip the covers off, wash them at 86°F (30°C), let everything dry fully, and store the cushions indoors until spring comes back.
