# A green geometric sunbed cushion by a shingled pool, and how one narrow lounger feels generous

*A lounger is the skinniest seat on any patio. This one doesn't look it. Here's why, and how to borrow the trick for a tight spot of your own.*

> **The quick answer:** A narrow sunbed cushion feels generous when its print picks up the ground around it, its backrest is a separate box cushion, and nearby pieces repeat one trim color. Order it in outdoor fabric with water-repellent and UV and fade-resistant finishes, keep it non-tufted, and give the seat and backrest their own lengths, since they don't have to match.

![Sun lounger with a green and white geometric patterned outdoor cushion on a white frame beside a pool and side table](https://cushionguide.com/media/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/green-geometric-sun-lounger-cushion-shingle-house-pool-1600.webp "An elevated three-quarter view shows the full seat and raised backrest in one continuous pattern.")

## Pinned by Callum: five marks along the pool edge

Five pins, from the hinged backrest to the lawn that shares the cushion's green.

1. **Raised backrest**: A separate backrest box folds without stressing a seam.
2. **Geometric seat**: The pattern's green matches the lawn right beside the paving.
3. **White side table**: Frame and table echo the white trim of the house.
4. **Terracotta pots**: Warm pots break up the all-green palette.
5. **Lawn edge**: Grass and fabric share a color, so the lounger looks planted in the garden.

## Why a strip of seat looks wide here

A sunbed is the narrowest seat on a patio. This one doesn't look it.

Start with color. The green in the geometric print is the green of the lawn a step away, so the lounger reads as part of the garden instead of something parked on the stone. A pale cushion would stop the eye at its edge. This one lets the eye run on to the grass, and the space feels bigger for it.

Then the build. This [sunbed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/) is two box cushions in one print, a seat and a raised backrest. The fold happens between them, at the frame's hinge, so no seam gets bent each time someone sits up. Self piping keeps both edges crisp without adding a color.

The props finish the job. White aluminum frame, white side table, white trim on the cedar shingles: three whites, so the metal all but disappears. Terracotta pots of white flowers warm up all that green. And there's one side table, not two. In a tight spot, every extra piece takes width from the seat.

The pattern is practical, too. Grass clippings and leaf drop land on a lawn-side lounger all summer and show far less on a green print than on white or pale gray.

The cover comes from the [outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) range, woven with water-repellent and UV and fade-resistant finishes. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Rain beads off this cloth, but the standard build has no quick-dry foam and no mesh bottom, so let a soaked cushion dry out, friend, and store it indoors in the off-season.

## Small-space rules I'd take from this pool edge

- ✓ Pull the cushion color from the ground beside it: lawn, deck boards or stone.
- ✓ Split seat and backrest into two box cushions so the fold lands between them.
- ✓ Give each backrest its own length; it doesn't have to match the seat.
- ✓ Keep one side table and paint it the trim color.
- ✓ Choose a pattern over a pale solid wherever leaves and clippings land.

> A sunbed cushion looks wider when its green matches the lawn beside it; make seat and backrest two box cushions so the fold never strains a seam.

## A campervan bench with two different backrests

One buyer wrote in about seating for a campervan, which is about the tightest outdoor room there is. Two bench cushions, two backrests, and neither backrest matched its seat.

The first cushion was about 22 3/4 x 24 in (58 x 61 cm), with a backrest 22 3/4 in (58 cm) long. The second was about 47 1/4 x 23 5/8 in (120 x 60 cm), with a backrest only 36 5/8 in (93 cm) long. The bench-with-backrest listing includes backrests, and each backrest length went into the personalization box.

For color they wanted a beige or greige linen, and the workshop pointed them to three neighbors on the chart: L-02, a cream beige; L-03, greige; and L-04, a warmer tone. More van and camper fits live under [boat and RV cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/).

Tight spaces rarely hand you matching lengths. How long is your lounger from the hinge to the foot? [Measuring the hinge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/chaise-lounge-sunbed-cushion-size/) walks you through it.

## Buyer questions: a covered patio, a wicker set and a sofa with a footstool

**A common question:** Will your linen cushions be all right outside on a covered balcony or patio?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, a covered balcony is fine. When a buyer asked about a pallet daybed on a covered patio, the workshop first checked that the area was under a roof, then recommended the regular fabric.

**A common question:** Can you make seat cushions and back pillows for a rattan sofa and a pair of wicker chairs?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send photos and the inside frame size, for example 86 1/2 x 86 1/2 x 28 3/4 in (220 x 220 x 73 cm), with the thickness you want. The workshop builds a full plan, such as two 86 1/2 x 28 3/4 x 5 in (220 x 73 x 13 cm) seats and eight 28 3/4 x 15 3/4 in (73 x 40 cm) back pillows, and draws a template for each chair shape from your photos for you to confirm. Thickness can still change before production, for example from 6 in (15 cm) down to 5 in (13 cm).

**A common question:** How long do bespoke cream cushions for an outdoor sofa and footstool take, at 33 x 19 3/4 in and 43 1/4 x 19 3/4 in (84 x 50 and 110 x 50 cm)?

**The workshop's answer:** That pair was quoted with a total of 7 to 10 days from making to delivery. The price depends on size, fabric and thickness, so send your measurements for a full quote.

## On the cutting table: the poolside lounger

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Seat cushion plus a separate backrest, both box edge |
| Fabric | Green and white geometric outdoor fabric, water-repellent with UV and fade-resistant finishes |
| Piping | Self piping in the same print |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm), the thickness outdoor quotes assume |
| Build | Non-tufted foam; tufting lets water in even through outdoor cloth |
| Drainage | No quick-dry foam or mesh bottom as standard |
| Zipper | Hidden on the back edge or the underside |
| Care | Fabric protectant spray; store indoors in the off-season |
| Best for | Pool decks, patios and lawn-side loungers |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a lounger at the hinge. Seat and backrest are two cushions, so they get two lengths.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a green outdoor sunbed cushion fade in full pool sun?

The outdoor range is woven with UV and fade-resistant finishes, which is why it's the one for full sun. Indoor cloths such as linen, velvet and corduroy have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun, so keep those under a roof.

### Should a poolside sunbed cushion be one piece or a separate seat and backrest?

Two pieces if the backrest adjusts. A separate backrest folds at the frame's hinge instead of bending a seam, and each piece can take its own length, since a backrest doesn't have to match the seat.

### Do outdoor lounger cushions from the workshop have quick-dry foam or a mesh bottom?

Not as standard. They use regular foam inside a water-repellent cover, with no reticulated quick-dry foam and no mesh drainage panel. Let a wet cushion dry before the next use, and bring it indoors for the off-season.
