# A gray custom bench cushion at the foot of the bed, and how a bench seats more people

*One seat pad, two loose pillows, no fixed back. It looks like a bedroom idea. It is really a lesson in seating a crowd.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion seats more people well when it is sized to the job: thickness chosen against the table or bed, a seat pad covering the full length and depth, and back support that can move. Here that means a gray linen-look pad and two loose square pillows. At a dining table, 3 in (7.5 cm) often beats the standard 4 in (10 cm).

![Light gray linen-look seat cushion and two square back pillows on a reclaimed wood bench at the foot of a linen bed](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/gray-seat-pad-back-pillows-rustic-bed-end-bench-1600.webp "At the foot of the bed, a gray seat pad and two loose back pillows turn an old wooden bench into a place to sit and dress.")

## Why the back is two pillows, not one cushion

Start with what isn't in the photograph: a fixed backrest. The old bench has only a low rail, so two square gray pillows lean against it. That is a hosting decision, whether anyone planned it or not. When the bench is pulled up to a table, or a third guest squeezes on, the pillows move. At night they go back to the bed.

The seat pad runs the full length and depth of the bench, box edge, no piping. Reclaimed boards are never quite level, and a full-coverage pad smooths them over. Stop the pad short and somebody ends up perched on bare wood at the end, and it is always the guest you most wanted to impress.

The gray is lifted from the bed linen, not the walls, so the bench reads as part of the bed. I once matched a [bedroom bench](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/) cushion to the paint instead. It looked like a guest who had come to the wrong party.

Every prop earns its place. The wicker basket repeats the warm tones of the aged wood. Sheer linen curtains soften the morning light, so the pale gray stays gentle. Wide oak floorboards carry the same warmth underfoot. Take away the wood and the wicker, dear, and a [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) gray in hazy light turns clinical.

## Pinned by Maggie

Four pins, from the gray seat to the reclaimed frame.

1. **Gray linen-look seat**: A soft gray pad matches the bed linen so the bench reads as part of the bed.
2. **Square back pillows**: Two loose square pillows lean on the low rail instead of a fixed backrest.
3. **Wicker basket**: The basket's warm weave repeats the aged wood tones.
4. **Reclaimed wood frame**: Weathered wood keeps the pale gray from feeling clinical.

## Three inches, not four, at a dining bench

A buyer got in touch about a dining bench where the workshop's standard 4 in (10 cm) cushion would have lifted everyone too high for the table. Could it be made 3 in (7.5 cm)? Or 3 1/8 in (8 cm), if the foam turned out soft?

It could. The quote covered two cushions in a beige linen-look weave: 71 1/4 x 15 1/2 x 3 in (181 x 39.5 x 7.5 cm) and 46 5/8 x 15 1/2 x 3 in (118.5 x 39.5 x 7.5 cm), with the thickness written into the personalization note. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. At a dining table, the knees decide.

## Before the guests arrive: a bench checklist

- ✓ Measure from the bench top to the underside of the table, then subtract the cushion thickness. What's left is the knee room.
- ✓ Run the seat pad the full length and depth of the bench, so nobody perches on bare wood at the ends.
- ✓ Order a back cushion as its own piece, at its own size, even from the same listing as the seat.
- ✓ For a family table, choose a water-resistant fabric that wipes clean.
- ✓ Put the zipper on the back edge, facing the wall, where no guest will see it.
- ✓ Try the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) before settling on 3 or 4 in for a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: backs, spills and three inches

**A common question:** I want a back cushion to go with my bench seat. How do I order the two together?

**The workshop's answer:** Order each piece as its own item at its own size, from the same listing. If the back is the same size as a seat piece, order two of that size and note which one is the back. A single order line carrying two sets of measurements is paused until you confirm.

**A common question:** We have messy kids. What fabric would you put on our banquette cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** For a family banquette the workshop sends its premium charts of water-resistant fabrics that wipe clean very easily. One family's set was three 2 in cushions with piping: 50 x 18 1/2 in, 59 x 18 1/2 in and 21 x 11 1/2 in.

**A common question:** 4 in is too thick for my dining bench. Can you make it 3 in instead?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. 3 in (7.5 cm) is available; write the thickness in the personalization section when you order. One buyer did exactly that for two long bench cushions 15 1/2 in (39.5 cm) deep.

> At a dining table, take the bench cushion's thickness off the seat-to-table gap before you choose it; 3 in often seats guests better than 4 in.

> **Tailor's margin:** A bench with only a low rail needs no fixed backrest: two loose square pillows give support and move when a third guest sits down.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a bench cushion be for everyday sitting?

4 in (10 cm) is the everyday standard and what most buyers keep. 3 in (7.5 cm) gives a neater, lower profile on bench seats and window seats, and helps where a table or window sill sits close above.

### Do loose back pillows stay upright against a low rail?

Usually, if the rail is firm. If they keep sliding, fabric ties can be sewn into the seams to tie a back cushion to the seat or bench, and double piping gives back cushions extra structure.

### Can the back pillows be a different color from the seat pad?

Yes. Each piece can be ordered in its own fabric code, and piping codes are given separately. Here the pillows stay close to the seat's gray, which keeps a small bench calm.

### Can the cover come off for washing?

Yes. Foam bench cushions come with a zippered, removable cover. Turn it inside out and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, then air-dry rather than tumble-dry.
