# A gray pinstripe corner floor cushion turns a dead attic corner into a seat

*Harlan takes an attic corner apart from beam to floorboards and shows how one cushion and two pillows turned a place you duck into a place you sit.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner floor cushion is one of the few seats that fits under a sloped attic ceiling, because it sits low enough that nobody bumps their head. Here a black, gray and white pinstripe box cushion with two flanged backrest pillows fills the corner; oak and jute supply the warmth, and the pillow tops stay below the roof line.

## Before and after: the corner you used to duck

Every attic has one: the corner where the roof comes down to meet the wall, too low to stand in and too awkward for a chair. Picture it before. Bare boards, a slope you duck under, maybe a suitcase nobody unpacked. Now look at it after: one [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), two backrest pillows, and a place to sit.

A floor seat is one of the few pieces that fits under the pitch without anybody bumping a head. That's the whole makeover, my friend. You don't raise the ceiling. You lower the seat.

Look close at the cloth. Fine black, gray and white lines, a pinstripe off a good suit, and from across the room they blur into a soft gray tweed. It's a tailored, menswear choice, and on its own it would run cold under a roof. So the room does the warming: the oak beam overhead, the oak chest against the wall, the honey jute underfoot. Side light from the dormer rakes across the stripes and shows the weave.

The seat is a plain box with self piping, nothing fancier. A seam is a promise, and a quiet one keeps it best. The two flanged pillows lean into the wall seam, and their tops stay well below the roof line. That was measured, not hoped for.

How high is the wall where your roof comes down? Measure that first, then size the pillows under it. The [corner floor cushion sizing Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) handles the seat, the [striped cottons](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) hold this pinstripe and its cousins, and more quiet corners live under [bedroom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/).

## Pinned by Harlan: beam to rug

Five pins, from the oak beam overhead to the jute rug underfoot.

1. **Oak roof beam**: The warm beam overhead keeps a gray stripe from feeling cold in an attic.
2. **Dormer window**: Side light from the dormer rakes across the stripes and shows the weave.
3. **Oak chest**: Matching oak furniture ties the floor seat to the room's timber.
4. **Monochrome pinstripe**: Fine black, gray and white lines read as a soft gray tweed from a distance.
5. **Jute rug**: Rough jute adds texture and a honey tone under the cool fabric.

## The corner in cross-section, top to floor

1. **Oak roof beam.** Warm wood overhead keeps a gray stripe from feeling cold in an attic.
2. **Roof line.** The fixed limit. Every piece below it has to fit under this height.
3. **Two flanged pinstripe pillows.** They lean into the wall seam so their tops stay under the slope.
4. **The seat.** A box-edge corner cushion in monochrome pinstripe cotton, code IN-04, self piped.
5. **Jute rug.** Rough texture and a honey tone beneath the cool cloth.
6. **Oak chest and a framed picture.** Matching timber ties the floor seat to the room; the picture gives the eye a place to stop on the right wall.
7. **Dormer window.** Side light for reading, and the reason the weave shows at all.

## Five inches, not seven

A buyer in the US liked one of the workshop's mustard floor sofas but wanted the seat about 18 to 19 in (46 to 48 cm) high, like a regular couch. Two stacked 7 in (18 cm) cushions sat too low. Three would have made 21 in (53 cm), too tall.

So the workshop made a 5 in (13 cm) extra layer through a custom listing, and the seat came to about 19 in (48 cm). It took 4 to 5 days to make and 3 to 5 days to deliver. The first delivery looked short, and it came with silver support bars instead of gold. The missing fourth parcel turned up the next day.

An old hand in the first shop I ever swept told me once: when a thing is almost right, don't start over, add a little. When a floor seat is a bit low, add a thinner layer, not another full cushion. The [raise-the-seat Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-seat-height-raise/) works through the numbers, and the [floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) atlas shows the stacks.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** If I stack two cushions to make a taller base, won't they slide apart?

**The workshop's answer:** It works. The workshop can add ties at the corners so you can tie the stacked cushions together. There are no ready photos of it, because it's a custom setup.

**A common question:** Can I pay for a floor sofa in installments?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, through Klarna, which offers several plans; 18-month and 24-month plans were among the options for a floor sofa.

**A common question:** Can you make a floor cushion to fit an odd-shaped corner in my kid's reading nook?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the shape and the measurements before you order, so everything is agreed first. The workshop will tell you whether an extra customization fee applies, which depends on the size.

## On the cutting table: the attic corner

|---|---|
| Cushion | Corner floor cushion, box edge |
| Fabric | Black, gray and white pinstripe cotton, code IN-04 |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Backrest | Two flanged pinstripe pillows leaning into the wall seam |
| Height rule | Pillow tops stay below the roof line |
| Warmth from | Oak beam, oak chest, jute rug |
| Light | Soft side light from a dormer window |
| Best for | Attic bedrooms and low corners under a slope |

> **Tailor's margin:** When a floor seat sits a little low, add a thinner layer: a 5 in (13 cm) cushion took one seat from 14 in to about 19 in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a floor cushion fit under a sloped ceiling?

Yes, and that's where it earns its keep. A floor seat sits low enough that nobody bumps a head under the pitch. Measure the wall height where the roof comes down and keep the backrest pillows below it.

### Why do pinstripes look gray from across the room?

Fine black, gray and white lines blend at a distance, so the pinstripe reads as a soft gray tweed. Up close you see the stripe; from the doorway you see a quiet, tailored solid.

### How do I keep a gray floor cushion from feeling cold?

Let the room bring the warmth. Here an oak beam, an oak chest and a jute rug add honey tones around the monochrome stripe, so the fabric can stay cool and tailored.

### How do I raise a floor sofa seat by a few inches?

Add a thinner custom layer instead of another full cushion. Two 7 in (18 cm) cushions made 14 in; a 5 in (13 cm) layer brought one buyer's seat to about 19 in (48 cm), regular couch height.
