# A gray and ivory striped swing cushion, told as a conversation

*Most swing orders start as a string of questions. This one begins with those questions, then walks out to the garden to read the finished swing.*

> **The quick answer:** A two-seat porch swing cushion works best as separate pieces: one long seat that spans both places, two quilted back cushions, ties at the ends and a front skirt over the rail. Here soft gray, taupe and ivory stripes in outdoor acrylic keep the swing calm beside pink roses, and the skirt hides the metal bar under your knees.

## Buyer questions first: odd chairs, a set of four, a shade that drifted

**A common question:** My wicker chairs are horseshoe-shaped. Can you make U-shaped cushions to fit them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo of each chair, a simple sketch with measurements or a template if you have one, your preferred thickness and your fabric and color. Photos of the actual chairs help get the curved cut-outs right, and the workshop then prepares a quote and production time.

**A common question:** I need four seat cushions, three at 26 x 30 inches and one at 30 x 30, in black or charcoal. How would you quote that, and how long would it take?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop priced a single 26 x 30 in (66 x 76 cm) cushion first, then gave one total for the set of four, including the 30 x 30 in (76 x 76 cm) piece, in black or charcoal. Processing was 7 to 9 days, with 3 to 5 days for delivery.

**A common question:** If I order an ottoman later on, will it match my sofa's color?

**The workshop's answer:** Not guaranteed. In one case a velvet ottoman ordered separately came out a warmer brown than the sofa. The workshop sent several replacement covers, asked for photos with each one fitted on the foam, because velvet sheen changes how color reads, and then refunded the cover cost.

## The buyer who couldn't read a number chart

A buyer in the US wanted a medium or dark blue and found the workshop's numbered color chart hard to read. Fair enough. Numbers are not colors. They asked for exact color numbers and the size of the cushions in the photo, which were 28 x 56 in (71 x 142 cm).

The workshop suggested a blue linen, number 38. The buyer looked and said it was too faded. They ordered two square cushions in anthracite instead.

Then the important part. The buyer was allergic to synthetic fabrics and insisted the covers be pure linen, with color 28, a dark gray, as the fallback. The workshop confirmed it.

Two lessons came ashore. Confirm fiber content every time a buyer mentions an allergy. And send photos of made-up cushions, not just swatch numbers. A chart is a map; a photo is the coastline. There is more on [natural fibers for allergy households](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushions-for-allergies-natural-fibers/).

## Pinned by Callum: five marks on the garden swing

Five pins cover the quilted backs, the long seat, the front skirt, a side tie and the charcoal steel A-frame.

1. **Quilted back cushions**: Two separate backs with stitched quilting lines stay plump and upright against the frame.
2. **Long seat cushion**: One seat piece spans both places, so there is no gap in the middle.
3. **Front skirt**: A fabric flap drops over the front rail, hiding the metal and protecting the back of the knees.
4. **Side tie**: Ties at the ends hold the seat to the frame while the swing moves.
5. **Steel A-frame**: The dark frame makes the pale stripes look crisp.

## Reading the swing once the questions were answered

Now the photo. A charcoal steel A-frame on a lawn, climbing roses behind, pink hydrangeas at the side, evening sun low across the grass.

This [porch swing cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/porch-swing-cushions/) is built in pieces. One long seat spans both places, so there is no gap in the middle for a blanket or a phone to fall through. Two separate backs, quilted with stitched lines, stay plump and upright against the frame.

The narrow stripe runs top to bottom on the backs and front to back on the seat. It leads your eye down and into the seat, which is where a swing wants you.

Then the front skirt. A flap of fabric drops over the front rail, hides the metal and softens the bar under the back of your knees. Re-covering an old swing, friend? Ask for it.

Ties at each end hold the seat to the frame while it moves. Rain doesn't negotiate, so the set is sewn in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and it still comes indoors before the first frost. Our Pattern on [tie placement for chairs and swings](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) shows where ties earn their keep.

> **Tailor's margin:** Ask for a front skirt on a swing seat. It hides the metal rail and softens the bar under the back of your knees.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is one long seat better than two short ones on a two-seat garden swing?

Usually. One seat spanning both places leaves no gap in the middle and moves as a single piece with the swing. Two short seats can drift apart as people get up and sit down. Separate back cushions are still the better choice.

### Which way should the stripes run on a striped swing cushion set?

On this set the stripe runs top to bottom on the backs and front to back on the seat, so the lines lead the eye down into the seat. A seat stripe running side to side would cut the swing into horizontal bands.

### Why confirm fiber content in writing when a buyer has a fabric allergy?

Because a color chart shows color, not fiber. When someone reacts to synthetics, get the fiber confirmed before production, as one buyer did for pure linen covers, and name a fallback color in the same fiber in case the first is unavailable.
