# A light gray corduroy window seat cushion by the coat hooks

*A garden window, a walnut board and brass hooks: a seat that works hardest in the worst weather.*

> **The quick answer:** A mid-tone corduroy window seat cushion suits a boot room all year: light gray shows less mud than cream and less dust than black. Stop it a finger's width short of a wood lip, hang wet coats beside the seat rather than over it, and let one throw pillow change with the seasons instead of the cushion.

It is the spot for pulling on boots and for a quiet coffee.")

## Pale, soft and ribbed against walnut and slate

Every hard thing in this boot room is dark: the walnut seat board and sill, the slate tiles, the brass hooks. So the [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) goes the other way, pale and soft and ribbed, in a light gray [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/).

It is cut a finger's width shallower than the walnut board. That strip of timber along the front reads like a picture frame, and muddy heels hit wood instead of fabric. The piping is the same gray cord, set right on the corner.

One terracotta linen pillow repeats the pot on the sill, beside a small white plant and a stack of books. That single warm note stops the gray from turning cold. Up at the hooks an olive jacket hangs where it belongs, beside the seat and not over it.

So, what does your back door let in each winter? That answer shapes the whole year for a seat like this.

## Pinned by Rosa: the boot room in five spots

Five spots, from the brass hooks down to the walnut lip.

1. **Self-piped corner**: The piping bead sits right on the corner so the gray cord keeps a sharp edge against dark walnut.
2. **Terracotta pillow**: One rust pillow picks up the plant pot and warms a cool gray seat.
3. **Walnut seat board**: The cushion stops a finger's width short of the walnut lip so the timber edge stays on show.
4. **Brass coat hooks**: Right by the hooks, this is where boots get pulled on, so a hard-wearing cord earns its place.
5. **Terracotta plant pot**: Pot and pillow share one earthy tone, tying the sill and the seat together.

## The same seat through a year of weather

| Season | What the seat faces | What I would do |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Wet coats, snowy boots | Hang coats beside the seat, never over it |
| Mud season | Dry mud on heels and paws | Let it dry, then brush along the wale |
| Summer | Strong garden light | Turn the cushion so one end doesn't fade first |
| Fall | Damp mornings, tracked-in leaves | Wash the cover at 86°F (30°C), air dry |
| Any season | A room that wants a change | Swap the pillow, keep the gray |

## The pink seat that waited on a furniture plan

An interior designer in the US brought the workshop a client's window seat: 20 x 80 in (51 x 203 cm), tufted, in the pink from the listing photo. Before quoting, the workshop confirmed which shade that photo showed. It was velvet color 27.

That quote came with about a week to make and 3 to 5 days to deliver, plus a trade discount. Then everybody waited for the client to approve the furniture plan, and the workshop added a 20 x 80 in option to the listing so the order could go through.

A seat by the door has its seasons, and so does a project. Confirm the color code behind a photo before you promise a client anything.

## Three questions about firm seats and backs

**A common question:** What do you need to quote a corner banquette cushion that's about 8 ft by 7 ft?

**The workshop's answer:** The depth as well as both sides. One corner measured 85.5 in (217 cm) on one side and 94.5 in (240 cm) on the other, 24 in (61 cm) deep, and was quoted from those three numbers.

**A common question:** Can back pillows be firm like backrests but still look like pillows?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One set of 38 x 13 in (97 x 33 cm) back pillows was made firm enough to act as backrests, zippered and machine washable. They went with two 77 x 30 x 4 in (196 x 76 x 10 cm) Dacron-wrapped seat cushions.

**A common question:** Do you have high-density foam, 1.8 lb or more, in a 6 in thickness, so adults don't sink through?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The foam is 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³, so it clears 1.8 lb. It is in the firm category and holds adults without sinking; there is no official ILD rating to quote. A 6 in (15 cm) thickness is possible, as on a 25 x 78 x 6 in (64 x 198 x 15 cm) seat.

> If a window seat sits by the back door, choose a mid-tone corduroy. Light gray shows less mud than cream and less dust than black.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cut a window seat cushion a finger's width short of a wood lip. The timber frames the seat, and muddy heels hit wood instead of fabric.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is corduroy a good fabric for a mudroom window seat?

Yes, in a mid tone. Corduroy is hard-wearing and soft to sit on, and light gray hides dried mud better than cream. Let mud dry completely, then brush it off along the wale.

### Should a window seat cushion cover the whole wooden board?

Not always. Stopping a finger's width short of a walnut or oak lip leaves a strip of timber on show, which reads as a frame. Measure the board first, then decide where the cushion stops.

### How do I keep a boot-room seat dry through winter?

Hang wet coats on hooks beside the seat, not over it. A corduroy cover is not waterproof, so if it gets damp, unzip it and let the cover and the cushion air dry apart.
