# A gray corduroy corner floor cushion that makes a bare playroom corner generous

*No canopy, no built-in, no hooks in the ceiling. Just a quarter circle of gray cord on an oak floor, and a corner that suddenly has somewhere to sit.*

> **The quick answer:** A 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) corner floor cushion is the size the workshop suggests for two toddlers, and it turns an empty playroom corner into a reading spot without adding furniture. Corner cushions come by the length of their straight sides, 40 or 48 in. Corduroy goes without piping, because its ribs already draw the curved edge.

## How a quarter circle makes a corner bigger

A small room wastes its corners. Nobody walks there, nothing fits there, and the dust knows it. Put the two straight sides of a quarter-circle cushion against those walls and the dead corner becomes the best seat in the room, while the curve faces out so no child runs into a sharp edge.

Look at the front. The arc is one long side band, and the corduroy ribs run up and down on it, so they read like neat pleats. The band is deep enough to give the cushion a firm outline on the oak floor. There is no piping, and none is needed; on [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) the ribs draw the line themselves.

Nothing is fixed overhead. For a rented room, or a ceiling too low for a canopy, that is the whole point, my friend. A cushion that stands on its own leaves the walls and the lease alone.

## Five small decisions

Three pillows, three frames, one stack of books: each pin shows how a bare corner was filled without crowding it.

1. **Curved corduroy front**: The arc is one long gusset strip, so the ribs run vertically and read like neat pleats.
2. **Boucle star pillow**: Loopy boucle contrasts with ribbed corduroy even though both are neutral.
3. **Rust flower pillow**: Rust against gray is a warm-cool pairing that stops a gray room feeling cold.
4. **Safari animal prints**: Frames on the right wall anchor the cushion so it doesn't float in an empty corner.
5. **Books within reach**: A small stack beside the cushion turns it into a reading spot.

## Three pillows, graded like a smile

The pillows stand star, flower, cloud from left to right, and their tops make a gentle arc that repeats the curve below. The cream boucle star is loopy against the ribbed gray, two neutrals with opposite textures. The rust velvet flower brings warmth; rust against pewter gray keeps a white room from feeling cold. The powder blue cloud cools it again.

Those two colors are borrowed from the lion cub and zebra prints above. The frames anchor the cushion, so it doesn't float in an empty corner. A stack of books sits on the floor beside it and a wooden crate holds the toys, both within reach of a small arm.

How much floor does your corner give you? Tape the two sides out before you choose between the [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/) sizes, and read the [quarter-circle sizing Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) first.

## Corduroy instead of velvet, at 40 inches

A buyer wrote about the tufted quarter-circle corner cushion. They liked the shape but not the velvet, and asked for a thick, good-quality cotton corduroy for a reading nook.

The workshop offered the same corduroy it uses on its modular floor sofas, at no extra cost. They ordered it at 40 x 40 in, in beige. Most tufted designs can change their cloth; ask before you decide a shape comes in velvet only.

## Small rooms, tall people, two toddlers

**A common question:** Can I add a backrest to the ottoman to make a small sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. There is an L-shaped corner backrest and a straight one. If you buy the floor sofa with an extra ottoman, a backrest cushion is included, and a straight backrest set between two sofas closes the gap between them.

**A common question:** I'm tall and the floor sofa sits too low for me. Can it be raised?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order an extra pair of base mattresses and stack them for a higher seat. The flat mattresses are sold on their own through a separate link, and extra couch covers can be made too.

**A common question:** What size corner nook cushion fits two toddlers?

**The workshop's answer:** Corner nook cushions come by radius, 40 in or 48 in (102 or 122 cm); for the larger one you choose 48 x 48 in. For two 3-year-olds the workshop suggested 40 x 40 in.

## On the cutting table

| Pillows | Boucle star, rust velvet flower, powder blue cloud |

> **Tailor's margin:** Put a corner cushion's two straight sides on the walls. The curve faces the room, so nobody trips on a sharp corner in a tight space.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does corduroy show wear on a floor cushion?

It marks where people sit, and the nap looks lighter from one direction and richer from the other. That is normal for corduroy. It is an indoor fabric, so keep a corduroy corner cushion away from damp porches.

### Does a corner floor cushion need a canopy over it?

No. Without a canopy, the curved front and the rib pattern carry the look, and nothing has to be fixed overhead. That suits a rental, a low ceiling, or a room you may rearrange next year.

### How do I check a corner cushion will fit before ordering?

Tape the two straight sides on the floor and join their ends with a curve. Live with it for a day. The largest standard size is 48 in per side, with a curved front of about 75.4 in (192 cm).
