# A gray bouclé custom bench cushion, piped in burnt orange, on a walnut storage bench

*Maggie reads a dove-gray bouclé pad on dark walnut paneling, explains why the orange welt runs on both seams, and lists what the foam must do on a lid that opens.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion on a lift-lid storage bench should be firm high-density foam, so it keeps its shape every time the lid goes up and you never feel the hard wood through it. Put ties on the hinge side only, placed from the hinges, and check the typed exact size before paying, because the typed size is what gets cut.

## Why the gray needed an orange line

Put a gray cushion on dark walnut and it vanishes. This bench solved that problem with nothing more than a line of cord.

The cushion is a dove-gray bouclé box with burnt orange piping on both the top and bottom seams. Two welts draw the full outline, so the pad stands off the paneled lid instead of sinking into the grain. Sight along the front: the piping runs dead level from end to end. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and a wobbly one shows twice as badly in a contrast color.

The orange was not picked off a card. It comes from the walnut's warm undertone and from the amber tealight on the seat, which is why it reads as planned rather than loud. How dark is your own bench wood?

Now the props. The gilt-framed botanical print sets the salon mood above. The stoneware jug of sweet peas, wildflowers and wheat stands at one end. The cup and saucer and the open book sit off-center, and between them there is still room for a person. The faded blue Persian rug and herringbone parquet keep the floor quiet so the bench does the talking. The raised panels on the bench front echo the boiserie on the wall above.

If your bench is dark, choose a cool body fabric and pull a warm piping from the grain. The [piping pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) covers matching and contrast cords, and nubby cloths like this one live on the [bouclé and teddy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/).

## Pinned by Maggie

Begin at the burnt orange welt on the front seam, then let the pins walk you to the tealight, the botanical print, the wildflower jug and the paneled bench below.

1. **Burnt orange piping**: Run on both seams, it draws the box outline so gray doesn't sink into dark walnut.
2. **Amber tealight**: The piping color is taken from this warm glow and the walnut's undertone.
3. **Botanical print**: Gilt frame and faded greens set the Parisian salon mood.
4. **Wildflower jug**: Placed at one end so the rest of the seat stays free.
5. **Walnut panel bench**: Raised panels echo the boiserie on the wall above.

## What the foam has to do on a lid that opens

- ✓ Hide the lid: the hard walnut top should never be felt through the seat, so the core is 32-density high-density foam, not soft fill.
- ✓ Stay square when the lid goes up: dense foam keeps the box edge from folding as the cushion tips back with the lid.
- ✓ Soften the first touch: a Dacron wrap over the foam fills the bouclé cover so its loops sit smooth over the corners.
- ✓ Stay put: ties on the hinge side only, each placed by measuring its hinge from one stated end of the bench.
- ✓ Get the size right: the exact size you type is the size that gets cut, whatever the dropdown says.

## Twenty inches instead of forty: the typed size wins

A buyer in the US ordered a bench pad and picked the 38 to 40 in length range from the dropdown. In the Exact Size box, though, they typed 18 x 20. The workshop cut what was typed, and an 18 x 20 x 3 in (46 x 51 x 7.5 cm) pad arrived for a bench that wanted roughly 20 x 40 in (51 x 102 cm).

The workshop explained that production follows the typed exact size, then offered three fixes: a refund of the difference, a second pad with that credit applied, or a free second pad. The buyer took the free identical pad, and the two side by side made up the length.

I have mistyped an order form myself, dear, so no lectures here. Just read the Exact Size box back out loud before you pay. For a lift-lid seat, the [storage bench pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) lists every measurement worth typing, and more benches of every length wait among our [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: curves, sketches and hinges

**A common question:** Could you make a curved cushion, say for an old church pew or a round bench by the fire pit?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Measure the inner curve along the front edge and the outer curve along the back edge with a flexible tape, or lay a string along each and measure it flat. Add the seat depth at both ends and in the middle, the straight end-to-end distance and a photo. The workshop redraws the curve for your approval, and very long curves are made as matching segments that are easier to handle and wash.

**A common question:** My bay window sketch is hard to read. What is the clearest way to send the measurements?

**The workshop's answer:** Type every side length in your message as well as sending the drawing. One buyer using the Angled Top bay style sent A = 4.3, B = 4.3, C = 78.5, D = 48, E = 24, F = 24 and G = 23 in, each side labeled by its letter.

**A common question:** Can I get ties on just one side, so the cushion stays on my blanket chest when I lift the lid?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, ties can go on the hinge side only, normally for a small extra charge. Write your exact size and a note such as ties on the hinge side in the personalization box, give each hinge's position measured from a stated end, and send a photo of the hinges with each hinge's width so the ties line up.

> **Tailor's margin:** Before paying, read the typed exact size back out loud. The workshop cuts what you type, not what the dropdown says.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why run contrast piping on both the top and bottom seams of a box cushion?

Two welts draw the full outline of the box, so the cushion reads as a shape from across the room. A single top welt leaves the bottom edge to blur into a dark bench, especially with a gray or neutral fabric.

### How firm should a cushion be on a hard wooden storage bench lid?

Firm enough that you never feel the lid through it. High-density foam holds its thickness under weight, and a Dacron wrap softens the first touch, so the seat feels padded without sagging down onto the wood.

### Where should flowers and a teacup go on a styled bench cushion?

At one end or off-center. Styling placed that way leaves most of the seat free, so the bench still works as a seat. Keep tall pieces like a jug of flowers away from the middle of the cushion.
