# A graffiti print bench cushion in a teen bedroom, read from the doorway and from the seat

*From the doorway, three colors and a black line. From the seat, a crowd of layered shapes a teenager chose for themselves.*

> **The quick answer:** From ten feet, a graffiti print bench cushion reads as three colors, magenta, lime and blue, held together by black outlines; up close, the layered shapes take over. Choose pillows from those colors, keep posters above seat level, and use a tough, easy-clean cotton on a cushion that lifts off the storage bench.

## Pinned by Élodie: the graffiti storage bench

Five pins, placed where the eye lands from the doorway and where it lands from the seat.

1. **Graffiti bench cushion**: It gives friends extra seating and hides storage for gear underneath.
2. **Lime pillow**: Lime matches the brightest green in the print.
3. **Black oblong pillow**: Black repeats the outlines of the graffiti shapes.
4. **Pink roller skates**: Real teen gear repeats the magenta in the print.
5. **Posters and lights**: Posters keep the palette young without competing at seat level.

## Doorway versus seat

| Detail | From ten feet | From the seat |
|---|---|---|
| Graffiti print | Magenta, lime and blue in one band | Layered shapes with black outlines |
| Lime pillow | A green block against the wall | The brightest green in the print, matched |
| Black oblong pillow | A dark anchor at the back | The graffiti outlines, repeated |
| Self-piped box edge | A crisp rectangle on the white box | The print carried over the rim |
| Pink roller skates | A spot of magenta on the floor | Real teen gear echoing the print |

## What survives the doorway, and why

Stand in the doorway, my friends, and the print simplifies itself. Magenta, lime and a clear blue, held in check by black. That is all ten feet allows, and it is enough.

The pillows were chosen from that distance. Lime matches the brightest green in the print; the black oblong repeats the outlines. Neither adds a new color, so a loud pattern looks planned rather than busy. Let one color speak and the others listen; here the print speaks and the pillows listen.

The room keeps its volume above seat level. Band and skate posters, a corkboard and a string of fairy lights stay high on the wall, where they set a young palette without competing with the pattern. Below, a charcoal rug grounds everything, a skateboard and trainers lean nearby, and a lava lamp and a laptop with headphones say whose room this is.

Up close it is a different cushion. The shapes layer, the black lines sharpen, and the self-piped box edge carries the print over the rim. The bench beneath hides gear and seats friends, so the cushion must be tough and easy to lift off. Who picked the print in your house? In a teen room, let the teenager choose. Siblings who want less noise will find quieter cottons among [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/).

## A toy box cushion with no zipper, and why that was fine

A parent wrote to the workshop about a cushion for a 2-year-old's toy box: first 16 x 31.5 in (40 x 80 cm), then a larger size, in a smoke-colored fabric. She was worried there was no zipper.

The shop's answer was practical. The fabric cleans easily by hand, so the cover never needs to come off. For children's furniture that is the right order of questions: when the cover is fixed, choose an easy-clean fabric first and the pattern second.

A toddler's toy box and a teenager's storage bench are the same furniture a decade apart. Both want a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) that lifts off the lid; see the [storage bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) notes, the [kid-friendly fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/) guide and more [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/).

## On the cutting table: the graffiti bench cushion

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Box cushion for a lift-lid storage bench |
| Fabric | Graffiti print cotton canvas in magenta, lime, blue, gray and black |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Pillows | Lime square and black oblong, both taken from the print |
| Handling | Loose, so it lifts off to reach the storage |
| Care | Easy-clean fabric first if the cover is fixed |
| Best for | Teen bedrooms that double as the hangout |

## Buyer questions: what the quote covers, an in-between thickness, a zipper on top

**A common question:** Does the quote include the piping, the filling and delivery? And can I have a plain cushion without tufts?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, piping, filling and delivery were all included in the quote for two tufted bench cushions of about 53 x 17.5 in (135 x 44 cm), 2 in (5 cm) high. A plain, crease-free version is made with seating foam and costs more; a lower-density foam and a more affordable velvet bring that price down.

**A common question:** Can I get a 2.5 in cushion instead of a standard thickness?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Write 2 1/2 in in the exact size section when you order and it will be made that way. Metric in-between options such as about 5 in (12.5 cm) are also available.

**A common question:** Where does the zipper go, and what happens if it ends up on top?

**The workshop's answer:** Zippers are hidden on the back edge or the underside. When one cut-out cushion came back with its zipper facing up, the shop sewed a new cover with the zipper on the bottom, free of charge, and shipped it out.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a teen's storage bench, let the teenager choose the print. The adult choices are the box edge, the foam and a cushion light enough to lift.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What pillows go with a loud graffiti cushion?

Take them from the print: lime for its brightest green and black for its outlines. Solid pillows in colors already in the pattern keep a loud print cohesive instead of adding a new voice.

### Is a patterned cushion practical on a storage bench?

Yes, if it lifts off easily and the fabric is tough. A busy print also hides everyday marks better than a pale plain, which counts when friends sit on it in sneakers.

### Where should posters and lights go around a printed bench?

Above eye level. Here band posters and fairy lights sit high on the wall, so the palette stays young without competing with the pattern at seat level.
