# A chair cushion set, with or without ties, for a whitewashed folding deck chair

*Maggie's notebook on one small patio chair: two boxed pads in a soft geometric print, a frame that still folds, and the measurements that make a narrow corner feel generous.*

> **The quick answer:** A folding deck chair takes a boxed seat pad cut to the frame width and a matching back cushion, so it still folds and feels like a lounge chair. If the seat tapers or curves, measure the front width, back width, and depth at the center and at both sides. Add ties only where the frame does not hinge.

![White folding wooden deck chair with gray, taupe and cream geometric seat and back cushions on a pale limestone patio](https://cushionguide.com/media/dining-chair-cushions/geometric-seat-back-cushions-whitewashed-deck-chair-1600.webp "Two soft neutral cushions turn a simple folding deck chair into a proper place to lounge.")

## Page one: a generous chair in very little room

Right, then. One folding deck chair, one small olive tree and a stretch of pale limestone. Not much room, and it still looks generous.

The chair is a plain whitewashed folding frame, the sort that usually carries a canvas sling. The sling is gone. In its place: a boxed seat pad and a matching boxed back cushion in a soft geometric print of cream, taupe, gray and sand, both self-piped. The seat pad is cut to the width of the frame and not a whisker wider, so the chair still folds. First small-space rule: nothing overhangs, and nothing comes off before the chair goes away.

The print stays within a couple of shades of the limestone wall and floor. On a small patio, strong contrast chops the space into pieces; close tones let it run together and read larger. The limed white wood keeps the corner bright. The only color that isn't stone is the olive in terracotta, set to one side so the eye travels the full width of the patio.

I can't see ties in this photograph, and on a folding chair I'd think twice before adding them. A chair cushion with ties is only as good as where the ties go: on a rail that doesn't hinge, never near the pivot. The [tie placement notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) cover it, and the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/) lets you try a seat and back pair.

My checklist for a narrow spot, dear:

- Seat pad cut to the frame width.
- A box edge on the back cushion, so it stands instead of slumping.
- One fabric for both pieces, within two shades of the paving.
- One plant, off to one side.
- An [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) if the chair lives outside.

What does your narrowest corner measure?

## Five pins on a small limestone patio

Five pins trace how a boxed seat, a boxed back and one olive tree make a folding chair feel like a lounger.

1. **Back cushion**: A boxed back cushion rests against the frame, replacing a thin canvas sling.
2. **Seat cushion**: The seat pad is cut to the frame width so the chair still folds.
3. **Whitewashed frame**: Limed white wood keeps the chair bright and light.
4. **Olive in terracotta**: The only green and warm clay tone in the frame.
5. **Limestone wall**: Pale stone matches the cream in the geometric print.

## Notebook table: a tapered seat, measured properly

| Piece | Front width | Back width | Depth at center | Depth at sides | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chair cushion (x2) | 18½ in (47 cm) | 15⅜ in (39 cm) | 18½ in (47 cm) | 17⅜ in (44 cm) | 2 in (5 cm) |
| Loveseat cushion | 37 in (94 cm) | 32⅝ in (83 cm) | 18⅞ in (48 cm) | 17⅜ in (44 cm) | 2 in (5 cm) |

## Two chairs, a loveseat and two depths each

A buyer messaged the workshop about outdoor chairs and a loveseat with tapered seats and gently curved fronts. The first message came with photos of a tape measure laid across each seat. The workshop asked for the numbers typed out instead, and they arrived as you see in the table above.

From those numbers the workshop drew templates with curved fronts and sent them for approval before anything was cut. The buyer chose a soft teal velvet, color 129, with self piping. In the end the quote came in above their budget, and the order stopped there.

What I keep from it is the pair of depths. On a seat with a curved front, the middle runs deeper than the sides: 1⅛ in (3 cm) on the chairs, 1½ in (4 cm) on the loveseat. Measure only one and the cushion will be wrong at the other. The same thinking runs through [tapered dining chair pads](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/tapered-dining-chair-pads/) and every seat under [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: tapered seats, shaped armchairs and one small square

**A common question:** My chair cushions taper, a little wider at the front than the back. What do I send?

**The workshop's answer:** Three numbers: the depth, the back width and the front width, for example 21 in (53 cm) deep, 19 in (48 cm) at the back and 20½ in (52 cm) at the front. The workshop draws a sketch of the shape and waits for your confirmation before production.

**A common question:** Can you make armchair cushions that are narrower at the back with a rounded front?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, through the shaped (trapezoid) listing, not the rectangular one. Upload a photo of the old cushion with every measurement, such as back 18⅞ in (48 cm), sides 17 in (43 cm), curved front 22 in (56 cm), center depth 20 in (51 cm) and thickness 4¾ in (12 cm). A shaped cushion ordered on the rectangular listing was canceled, refunded and reordered.

**A common question:** I only need one small seat cushion, about 13¾ x 13¾ in (35 x 35 cm). Why isn't it cheaper, and is there a discount?

**The workshop's answer:** Shipping is most of the cost, so even a small size has a floor. For one or two cushions the listed price is the best available; several pieces ordered together can get a small discount.

## On the cutting table: the deck chair pair

| | |
|---|---|
| Chair | Whitewashed wooden folding deck chair |
| Pieces | Boxed seat pad and matching boxed back cushion |
| Fabric | Outdoor acrylic, soft geometric print (code 5060) |
| Colors | Cream, taupe, gray and sand |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Seat width | Cut to the frame width so the chair still folds |
| Ties | Optional; only on rails that do not hinge |
| Best for | Narrow patios, balconies and small porches |

> A folding deck chair cushion should be cut to the frame width and no wider, so the chair still folds flat with both pads on.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a seat with a curved front, measure depth at the center and at both sides. The two numbers can differ by 1½ in (4 cm).

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will seat and back pads stop a folding deck chair from folding?

Not if the seat pad is cut to the frame width and the back cushion rests against the frame instead of wrapping around it. Keep any ties on rails that don't hinge.

### What print works for chair cushions on a small stone patio?

A soft print within a couple of shades of the paving. Here cream, taupe, gray and sand sit close to pale limestone and whitewashed wood, so the chair looks calm and the patio reads larger than it is.

### Do tapered seat cushions always need a paper template?

Not always. Typed numbers for the front width, back width and depth at the center and sides are often enough; the workshop draws the shape and sends it for approval.

### How thick should cushions for a folding patio chair be?

In one past order, the chair and loveseat cushions were 2 in (5 cm) thick, enough to soften a slatted seat while keeping the chair light. A much thicker pad looks plusher but can stop a folding frame from closing.
