# Custom throw pillows in black and cream jacquard and mustard bouclé, bought to last

*Élodie reads a pair of pillows on a linen sofa, one graphic and one golden, and follows the money: which pillow earns the better cloth, and when a cover alone will do.*

> **The quick answer:** Spend on the patterned front pillow of a custom throw pillow pair and save on what you already own, since covers-only orders fit existing inserts. Pair one woven pattern with one textured plain pillow in a stronger color, and wash zippered covers below 86°F (30°C) with a low dryer setting.

## Pinned by Élodie: the jacquard and bouclé pillow pair

Start with the jacquard in front, then let the pins lead you back to the mustard, the cream cord, the mug and the olive branch.

1. **Geometric jacquard pillow**: The patterned pillow sits in front, the plain one behind.
2. **Mustard bouclé pillow**: Strong color behind a monochrome print keeps the pair lively.
3. **Cream piping**: Picks up the pattern's light yarn and the linen sofa.
4. **Terracotta mug**: Warm clay in the foreground balances the mustard.
5. **Olive branch**: Loose greenery softens the crisp pillow edges.

## Card one: graphic in front, gold behind

The eye sits down first, my friends, and here it sits on the front pillow: a black and cream geometric jacquard, knife-edged, with a fine cream cord around it. Behind it, a mustard bouclé, plain and round-shouldered, glowing like late honey.

This is the simplest layering rule there is. Pattern in front, plain behind. It works here because the plain pillow carries the stronger color. The jacquard speaks in black and cream, the bouclé answers in gold, and neither talks over the other.

Warm raking light crosses the pair from the side. It lifts the raised weave of the jacquard, where the pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed on top, and it catches every loop of the bouclé so the mustard reads soft instead of flat. The cream piping takes up the lightest yarn of the pattern and the linen of the sofa beneath, so the black never floats.

The rest is warmth: a cream linen sofa against a warm plaster wall, a terracotta mug in the foreground whose clay balances the mustard across the frame, a loose olive branch softening the crisp pillow corners. More pairs wait in the [throw pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/throw-pillows/) atlas and on the [jacquard and damask shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/), and the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/) lets you try a pairing before you order. Which pillow on your sofa gets picked up first?

## Card two: pillow fabric, inserts and piping, spend or save

| Choice | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Front pillow fabric | Spend | It is seen first and handled most; a jacquard keeps its pattern in the weave |
| Back pillow | Save on pattern | A plain bouclé needs no repeat matching; color and texture do the work |
| Inserts you already own | Save | Order zippered covers only and keep the fill |
| Piping | Spend attention | A cream cord ties the print to the sofa |
| Very thick floor seats | Save | Two mid-thickness cushions stacked can cost less than one very thick one |

## Card three: twelve inches, built two ways

A couple in the US wanted three deep floor seats, 12 in (30 cm) thick, sized 60 x 30 in and 60 x 20 in, with backrests and bolsters. The first quote came in far above their budget.

The shop was honest about why: thickness was driving the price. So the plan was rebuilt. Each seat became two 6 in (15 cm) cushions stacked to the same 12 in, four at 30 x 60 x 6 in and two at 20 x 60 x 6 in, with two 15 x 60 x 4 in backrests and two bolsters, all in red, color 22.

The new total, shipping included, dropped by roughly a third and came much closer to their budget. Same height, same red, different arithmetic. It is the logic of a good pillow pair, too: spend where the eye and the body notice, save where they don't.

## Buyer questions: covers, matching pillows and the wash

**A common question:** I already have foam inserts. Can I order just the covers?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The zippered cover listing is covers only, with no foam or filling, and custom covers-only orders are made for existing inserts, including trapezoid bay window cushions and outdoor sectional cushions. The shop double-checks that you really want covers only, and for shaped pieces it asks for a measured drawing and a photo of the space.

**A common question:** Can you make throw pillows to match my cushions, round ones included?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in any size, in matching or contrasting fabric; send measurements and a reference image. Past orders include two 14 x 14 in (36 x 36 cm) filled pillows in the same fabric and piping as an earlier cushion, and one 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm) square with two 20 in (51 cm) flat round pillows. Pillows come filled or as covers.

**A common question:** What's the right way to wash and dry zippered sofa covers?

**The workshop's answer:** Machine wash below 86°F (30°C); turning them inside out is optional. If you use a dryer, pick the low setting. Covers with a rubberized non-slip base can shed particles in the machine, so air-dry those, shake them out and use a lint roller.

## On the cutting table: the pillow pair

| | |
|---|---|
| Front pillow | Geometric jacquard, black and cream |
| Edge | Knife edge |
| Piping | Contrast, cream |
| Back pillow | Mustard bouclé, plain |
| Closure | Zippered cover |
| Care | Machine wash below 86°F (30°C), tumble dry low |
| Setting | Cream linen sofa, warm plaster wall |
| Best for | A pair ordered together: one pattern, one texture |

> Order custom throw pillows as a pair: a patterned jacquard in front and a plain textured bouclé behind carrying the stronger color.

> **Tailor's margin:** Good pillow inserts can stay; order zippered covers only and put the savings into the front pillow's fabric.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should the patterned pillow or the plain one sit in front?

The patterned one. A print reads best where nothing hides it, and the plain pillow behind can carry a stronger color, as the mustard bouclé does here, without competing for attention.

### Is jacquard a good choice for a pillow used every day?

It is a sturdy one, because the pattern is woven into the cloth rather than printed on the surface, so there is no print layer to rub off. Pick a tight weave for a pillow that gets leaned on daily.

### Can two stacked cushions stand in for one very thick floor seat?

Yes. One couple replaced 12 in seats with two 6 in cushions stacked to the same height, and the total fell by roughly a third, because thickness was the main thing driving the price.
