# Cube-print outdoor cushions on a garden sofa, and the foam that keeps the backs upright

*Callum reads a close-up in low sun: a tumbling-block print, a piped seam, and back cushions that stand up straight instead of slumping. The reason is inside the cover.*

> **The quick answer:** Outdoor bench cushions with upright backs need firm foam inside, not just a stiff fabric. Standard seats use 32-density high-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm at roughly 6 to 7 out of 10 and wrapped in polyester wadding. Backs can be made as firm as the seat. Standard outdoor foam is not quick-dry, so keep the set under a roof.

## Log entry: what low sun shows at the seam

Low sun tells the truth about a cushion. It rakes across the cloth and shows every sag, and on this garden sofa there are none to show.

The print is a tumbling-block geometric in cream, slate gray, taupe and sand. Up close it reads almost woven, a 3D trick played with three tones. Follow the self piping along the top edge: it marks the turn from face to boxing, and the cubes carry on around the corner without a break. The honey-toned acacia frame warms the gray, and the evening light brings up the sand. A neutral geometric like this adds pattern without arguing with a colorful garden.

Now the part the camera cannot see. The back cushions stand upright and lean into the frame like good crew, which keeps the seat deep. That is foam doing its job. The workshop's standard seat insert is high-density polyurethane at about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm to firm, wrapped in polyester wadding. It is not memory foam, and it holds a flat, structured face. Backs are softer than seats by default but can be made just as firm, and a thick boxed back needs a solid foam wedge; loose fill cannot hold that profile.

One more line for the log, friend. Standard outdoor cushions have no quick-dry reticulated foam and no mesh drainage base. The fabric sheds a shower; the foam inside would rather not meet one. Rain doesn't negotiate, so a set like this belongs under a roof, and indoors for the off-season. See the [dry-fast foam pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dry-fast-foam-outdoor-cushions/), the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/), the [outdoor cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/) and the [outdoor acrylic shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/). Is your patio sofa under a roof?

## Pinned by Callum: the garden sofa close-up

Read the pins from the cube-print back cushion to the piped seam, the second back, the seat and the honey wood frame.

1. **Cube-pattern back cushion**: The tumbling-block print gives a 3D effect that looks woven rather than printed up close.
2. **Piped seam**: Self piping marks the turn from face to boxing while the pattern continues around it.
3. **Second back cushion**: Back cushions lean upright against the frame, keeping the seat deep.
4. **Seat cushion**: The same fabric on the seat keeps the whole sofa calm.
5. **Wooden frame**: Honey-toned wood warms the gray and sand in the pattern.

## What sits under the cube print: seat versus back

| | Seat cushion | Back cushion |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Solid 32-density foam, 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) | Firm foam wedge, or shredded foam for a softer pillow |
| Wrap | Polyester wadding around the foam | Wadding on a wedge; inner cover on loose fill |
| Feel | Medium-firm, about 6 to 7 of 10 | Softer by default; can match the seat |
| Standard size | 4 in (10 cm) thick | About 16 in (40 cm) tall, 4 in (10 cm) thick |
| Job here | Keeps the seat deep and level | Stands upright against the frame |

## Right foam, wrong color: change the sail

A buyer wrote in after ordering two outdoor cushions at 18 x 53 in (46 x 135 cm) with piping. Then they decided the pair should match a cushion already on their patio, in a different color.

Sending both back would have cost more than it saved. So the shop offered a new cover at production and shipping cost and left the foam where it was. It sent photos of three candidate outdoor colors, and the buyer chose the closest, knowing fabric batches can vary slightly.

That is sound seamanship. When the color is wrong but the foam is fine, replace only the cover. The foam is the hull; the cover is the sail. Covers-only orders are made in any size to fit foam you already own; see [covers for existing foam](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/).

| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm), the standard for outdoor quotes |

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My outdoor couch is always under a roof. Can you make cushions for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop agreed to make two patio cushions for a covered outdoor sofa with a seat about 96 x 31 in (243 x 79 cm), wide by deep, and offered to send pricing.

**A common question:** If I order several outdoor cushions at once, is there a discount?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: multi-piece orders have been quoted as a package. A ten-piece outdoor set, five 31½ x 31½ x 3 in (80 x 80 x 8 cm) seat cushions plus five bolsters, came in well below the same pieces priced one by one. Send the full list in one message so the quote covers it all.

**A common question:** Does a custom quote include shipping?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the quote: some past quotes came with shipping included, others listed it separately, so check that the shipping line is there before you pay. The workshop ships to the US and Canada.

> **Tailor's margin:** Standard outdoor cushions have no quick-dry foam, so keep them under a roof and bring them inside for the off-season.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can outdoor cushions stay out in the rain?

Not for long. The fabric is water-repellent, so a shower beads and runs off, but standard outdoor cushions have no quick-dry foam or mesh drainage base. Keep them under a roof or cover, store them inside off-season, and a fabric protectant spray helps the finish.

### How firm is 32-density foam?

Medium-firm to firm, around 6 to 7 on a 1 to 10 scale. At about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) it is high-density polyurethane that holds a flat, structured shape and resists sagging. It is not memory foam.

### Why do some back cushions flop forward?

Usually the fill is too soft for the height. Loose shredded foam or fiber makes a relaxed pillow, but a thick boxed back needs a solid foam wedge to stand upright. Ask for the backs to match the seat's firmness.

### Should outdoor cushions be tufted?

No. Tufting buttons let water into the foam, even when the cover is outdoor fabric. Plain foam cushions with piped box edges are the better build for a patio, porch or garden sofa.
