# Four striped and leaf print box cushions, stacked for a houseful of guests

*When the whole family comes for supper, the bench does the heavy lifting. Here are four fabrics that could carry it, stacked so you can judge them honestly.*

> **The quick answer:** For a custom bench cushion that seats a crowd, choose a stripe you can match at the corners and say which way it runs. On a long bench, stripes running front to back mark out a place for each guest; running the length, they draw one calm line. Firm 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) foam means guests sit on the cushion, not in it.

## Stacked like a buffet line, read like a seating plan

A cream studio sweep and four box cushions. No table, no guests, no candles. And yet it's the most useful photograph for a hostess I've seen in a while.

Stacking with small offsets exposes every boxing band, and the band is where a stripe tells the truth. On a well-made [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), the stripe on top meets the stripe on the side at the corner. Look at the self-piped corners on the right. Each cord is covered in its own fabric, so the pattern runs right to the seam with no contrast line to hide a sloppy match.

The order of the stack is deliberate. The teal and olive leaf print sits on top because it's the calmest, so the eye reads the pile from quiet to loud. Below it, a wide hot pink and raspberry stripe, the boldest of the four and best kept for a single statement seat. Then orange and sky blue in equal bands, pure beach hut. At the base, periwinkle and maroon, the deepest, which anchors the stack and suits terracotta or oak rooms.

All four come from one printed range of [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/). That matters when you're seating a crowd. Put the leaf print on a long bench and a stripe on the two end chairs, and the table still looks like one family rather than a yard sale.

## Pinned by Maggie: five corners worth checking

Five pins, from the calm leaf print on top to the self-piped corners that show every stripe match.

1. **Leaf print on top**: The calmest pattern sits on top so the eye reads the stack from quiet to bold.
2. **Pink and raspberry stripe**: A wide two-tone stripe is the boldest choice here and suits a single statement seat.
3. **Orange and sky blue stripe**: Opposite colors in equal widths give a retro beach-hut feel.
4. **Periwinkle and maroon stripe**: The deepest stripe anchors the stack and suits warm terracotta or oak rooms.
5. **Self-piped corners**: Offsetting the cushions shows every piped corner and how each stripe is matched at the seam.

## Seating a full table on one bench

- ✓ Measure the bench, dear, not the cushion you used to have. Guests will find every inch you shaved off.
- ✓ State the stripe direction relative to the long side, and ask the workshop to confirm it back in writing.
- ✓ Front-to-back stripes mark out places; lengthwise stripes draw one long, calm line. Choose on purpose.
- ✓ Ask for firm foam on a seat people perch on. The standard is high-resilience foam at 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³).
- ✓ Lay the print and stripe swatches on the real bench together, the way this photo stacks them.
- ✓ If your size falls between two menu options, pick the closest and write the exact numbers in the note.

## The stripe that ran the wrong way

A buyer ordered a striped bench cushion cover and asked for the stripes to run the short way. It arrived with them running the long way. Not a catastrophe, but not what they had asked for either.

The shop apologized and remade the cover only, so the buyer kept the insert they already had. The remake took one to two weeks door to door, which covered sourcing the fabric again, sewing and delivery.

I did the very same thing years ago with a ticking stripe on a dining bench, and I've written the direction on every order since. Say it relative to the long side, and ask for it to be confirmed. The [stripe direction guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) spells it out.

## Buyer questions, before the guests arrive

**A common question:** My bench size falls between two options in the menu. Which one do I click?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the closest size, usually the one just above yours, then type your exact dimensions and fabric code in the personalization box. The workshop sews to the note, not the menu. A 16 x 56 in bench, for instance, was ordered under the 16 x 55 in option.

**A common question:** What do you need from me for a trapezoid or bay window seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** A simple hand sketch with every side lettered: back length, front length, both angled sides, and E, the depth from front to back. For a bay with several windows, measure each line between the break points plus the depth at each, and add a photo. If the numbers can't close into a shape, the shop asks you to recheck.

**A common question:** What foam goes inside, how firm is it, and is it wrapped?

**The workshop's answer:** High-resilience foam at 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³, described as firm to medium-hard and long-lasting, so you sit on it rather than sink in. It is wrapped in polyester fiber (Dacron) batting before it goes into the cover, which fills out the corners.

> **Tailor's margin:** Stack the stripe swatches on the real bench before ordering. A stripe that looks calm in hand can shout across a dinner table.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do front-to-back stripes help a dining bench seat more guests?

They add no room, but they help. Front-to-back stripes divide a long bench into implied places, so guests spread out evenly instead of bunching at one end. Lengthwise stripes read as one calm line, better on a narrow window seat. Choose on purpose and write it on the order.

### Can a leaf print and stripes from one fabric range share the same table?

Yes, if they come from one range and share a color. In this stack the teal leaf print and the periwinkle and maroon stripe could dress a bench and two chairs and still look related. Lay the swatches together before deciding.

### Should a bench cushion for dinner guests be firm or soft?

Firm to medium-hard. People perch, lean forward and shift around at a table. High-resilience foam at 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) keeps them on the cushion rather than in it, and a fiber wrap softens the edges.
