# Four red curved outdoor bench cushions and the props around them

*Four wicker benches, four red arcs, one teak table and a lot of jasmine. Callum reads the courtyard prop by prop, weather first.*

> **The quick answer:** Curved outdoor bench cushions for a circular seating area should all be cut from one approved template, so every cushion fits every bench section and can swap places. Keep the seats one solid color and put the pattern on the rug. The foam is flexible enough to fold or roll for winter storage without damage.

## Two questions off the patio, first

**A common question:** If I order one long outdoor cushion for a pool bench, can I fold it up for storage without creasing it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The foam is flexible, so it can be folded or rolled for storage without damage, and the cover can be made in water-repellent outdoor fabric. One quote was for a 118 x 19 3/4 x 5 in (300 x 50 x 13 cm) outdoor-fabric cushion, made in 3 to 5 business days. A bench that long can also be split into two long cushions or one per seat.

**A common question:** For van bench cushions with backrests, can a backrest be shorter than its seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The bench-with-backrest listing includes backrests in any size; write each one in the personalization notes, for example a 36 5/8 in (93 cm) backrest on a 47 1/4 x 23 5/8 in (120 x 60 cm) seat, and a 22 7/8 in (58 cm) backrest on a 22 7/8 x 24 in (58 x 61 cm) seat.

## One template, four times

Four cushions, one paper template. That is the whole trick of this circle.

Four curved natural wicker benches ring a round teak table under a pergola. Each bench carries a brick red box cushion cut to the same arc, and the gaps between the benches are equal, so the circle stays open to walk into. Because every cushion comes off one approved template, any of them can swap seats. Stack them in the shed in October and you do not need to remember which went where.

For a curve, the template is everything. Trace one bench section on paper, or measure its chord and rise, and send that. The method is in [curved cushion chord, rise and radius](https://cushionguide.com/guides/curved-cushion-chord-rise-radius/) and [paper templates for custom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/). Approve one, then repeat it.

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins, from the repeated arc to the gap you walk in through.

1. **Repeated arc cushion**: Every cushion is cut from the same template, so any one can swap places.
2. **Gap for walking in**: Equal gaps between benches keep the circle open and usable.
3. **Round teak table**: Echoes the circle and keeps drinks in reach of every seat.
4. **Jasmine vines**: White flowers and deep green make the red cushions the only strong color.
5. **Fern in foreground**: Frames the aerial view and softens the stone.

## Why every prop out there is where it is

This is a styled courtyard, but every piece earns its place. Here is how to copy it.

**One strong solid on the seats.** Brick red works because everything else is green, stone and honey wicker. From above, a print on four curved cushions would look like confetti. The only pattern is the cream outdoor rug, underfoot, where pattern belongs.

**A round table in a round room.** The teak table repeats the circle and keeps a drink within reach of every seat. Teak weathers to silver if you let it, and nobody minds.

**Green that frames.** Jasmine climbs the pergola posts. Its white flowers and deep leaves leave the red as the only strong color. Ferns and a fiddle-leaf fig sit in planters, not in the ground, so they can move with the season and soften the flagstone.

**Shade overhead.** The timber beams break the sun into dapples. Fewer hours of hard noon sun on a cushion means a color that holds longer. How many hours of direct sun does your patio take in July?

**Stone underfoot.** Flagstones shed water fast after a storm. Rain doesn't negotiate, so a patio that drains helps the cushions dry. ## Right foam, wrong red

One buyer wrote in after ordering two outdoor cushions, 18 x 53 1/8 in (46 x 135 cm), with piping. Then came second thoughts about the color: they needed it to match a cushion they already owned.

Sending two cushions back would have cost the buyer more than the fix was worth. So the shop offered a new cover at production and shipping cost instead. It photographed three candidate outdoor fabrics, and the buyer picked the closest match, knowing that dye batches can vary slightly.

The foam was fine, friend. Only the skin changed. Worth knowing before you order a circle of four: order every cover at once, from one batch. > **Tailor's margin:** Keep curved outdoor bench cushions in one strong solid color and put the pattern on the rug, underfoot, where it belongs.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do you make cushions for a curved outdoor bench?

Start with a paper template or chord-and-rise measurements of one bench section. If the sections match, one approved template can be repeated for every cushion, so any cushion fits any seat in the circle.

### Should outdoor cushions be patterned or solid?

Seen from a balcony or across a courtyard, a strong solid reads calmer than a print, especially when the rug is already patterned. On a single small bench seen up close, a stripe or geometric works well.

### Can I change the color of outdoor cushions without replacing the foam?

Yes. When the foam is sound, a new cover in another fabric is the simplest fix. Ask for photos of the candidate colors and expect small differences between dye batches.

### Do outdoor cushions need to come inside for winter?

Bring them in before the first frost and store them dry. Flexible foam can be folded or rolled for storage without damage, which helps with long bench cushions and a crowded shed.
