# Four custom bench cushions in a stack, and what mud, dogs and sun will do to each

*Charcoal, mustard, navy, oatmeal. Two get piping and two don't. I ran each one through a year of wet boots on paper before writing this.*

> **The quick answer:** For a mudroom bench cushion, choose the color of the dirt your household makes: charcoal and navy hide mud, oatmeal hides pale dust and hair. Give mid and dark tones a contrast cord so the edge stays defined against wood. Then work back from seat height: a 15 in (38 cm) bench plus a 3 in (7.5 cm) cushion gives an 18 in (46 cm) seat.

## 4 bench cushions, read from the side view

Lay four bench cushions on their sides and you see what a showroom never shows you: the wall.

This stack sits on a slatted oak bench beside a plaster ledge, lit from the side. Every custom [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) here is a firm box with straight walls, the shape that stays square when someone drops onto it with a backpack. Top to bottom: charcoal, mustard, navy, oatmeal, all in a dotted chenille weave from the [jacquard and damask](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/) family.

Only two carry piping. Mustard gets a rust velvet cord and navy gets a cream one. Charcoal and oatmeal go bare. The rule fits in one line, partner: if a color disappears against the bench, it earns a cord; if it already stands out, skip it.

The props are honest. A stoneware jug of dried wheat and eucalyptus, and a brass tape measure on the ledge, which is the photographer telling you these were cut to order. Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

Now the daily-life test. A mudroom bench sees wet boots, a dog that jumps up after a walk, backpacks dragged across the front edge and a stripe of afternoon sun from the door. Chenille is soft and plush, but it can pill and snag at friction points, and on this bench the front edge is the friction point. A tight, low-pile weave and a firm box edge help it wear evenly. What color is the dirt at your back door? More entry setups live under [mudroom and entryway cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/).

## Pinned by Nate: 5 pins down the bench cushion stack

Five pins down the stack, one per cushion, plus the brass tape measure on the ledge.

1. **Charcoal plain cushion**: Strong contrast in the weave means no piping is needed.
2. **Mustard with rust cord**: Rust velvet piping gives the mid-tone mustard a defined edge.
3. **Navy with cream cord**: A cream cord keeps navy from disappearing against dark wood.
4. **Oatmeal base**: The pale bottom cushion grounds the stack on the oak.
5. **Brass tape measure**: A tape on the ledge signals cushions cut to order.

## A year by the back door, cushion by cushion

What each color forgives and what it tells on, under ordinary family traffic.

| Cushion | Piping | Forgives | Tells on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charcoal | None; the weave carries its own contrast | Mud, wet paw prints | Pale dog hair, road salt, dust |
| Mustard | Rust velvet cord | Sand, dry leaves, crumbs | Dark mud, grease |
| Navy | Cream velvet cord | Mud, denim rub-off | Lint and pale hair |
| Oatmeal | None; it already contrasts with the stack | Pale hair and dust | Mud, coffee, dark paws |

## A 15 in niche and an 18 in target

A buyer in the US had a mudroom niche 17 x 35.75 in (43 x 91 cm) and 15 in (38 cm) high, and wanted the seat top at 18 in (46 cm). Subtract before you pick a fabric: 18 − 15 = 3 in (7.5 cm) of cushion.

The workshop told them to select 17 in wide, 36 in long and 3 in thick from the menu, then type the exact 35.75 in length into the personalization note. The cushion took about a week to make and 3 to 5 days to arrive.

Two habits to copy. Work backward from seat height, not forward from a thickness you like. And when your length falls between menu sizes, the note is the drawing. The [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) does the subtraction if you would rather not.

## Mudroom questions: swatches, codes and fill

**A common question:** The fabric swatches in the listing are tiny. Can I see larger pictures before I choose?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Name the fabric codes you are considering and the workshop photographs bigger pieces of them. Physical samples can be posted if you cover the shipping, and a drawing of your bench with its sizes helps the workshop give an exact quote.

**A common question:** Is the listed bench cushion price already discounted, or should I hunt for a coupon code?

**The workshop's answer:** No code is needed: the listing shows the current price, and several cushions ordered together are quoted as one set. Promo codes can carry a minimum spend; when one wouldn't apply at checkout, the workshop refunded the difference by hand.

**A common question:** Are the back cushions filled with the same foam as the seat?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Back pillows are filled with shredded foam, which is softer to lean against, while seat cushions use solid foam. The workshop confirms the fill with you before production.

## Measurement table, graph-paper edition

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushions | Four long bench cushions, box edge, straight walls |
| Fabric | Dotted chenille weave in charcoal, mustard, navy and oatmeal |
| Piping | Rust velvet on mustard, cream velvet on navy, none on the rest |
| Bench | Slatted oak |
| Niche in the story | 17 x 35.75 in (43 x 91 cm), 15 in (38 cm) high |
| Thickness | 3 in (7.5 cm) for an 18 in (46 cm) seat |
| Seat fill | Solid foam; back pillows get shredded foam |
| Timing | That order: about 1 week to make, 3 to 5 days to arrive |
| Best for | Mudrooms, entry benches, boot rooms |

> Work backward from seat height: an 18 in seat on a 15 in bench wants a 3 in bench cushion, not the thickness you happen to like.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a cushion color disappears against the bench, give it a contrasting cord. If it already stands out, skip the piping.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why do only two cushions in the stack have piping?

Mustard and navy are the tones that lose their edge against oak, so they get a rust or a cream velvet cord. Charcoal and oatmeal have enough contrast on their own, and a cord there would only add another line to keep clean.

### Is chenille a sensible fabric for a bench by the back door?

It is soft and plush, but chenille can pill and snag at friction points, and on a mudroom bench the front edge takes every bag and boot. Choose a tight, low-pile chenille and a firm box edge so the wear stays even.

### What if my bench length falls between the menu sizes?

Pick the nearest menu size above it and type the exact length into the personalization note. One buyer selected 36 in (91 cm) and wrote 35.75 in in the note, which is the number the workshop worked to.

### How much does a bench cushion settle when you sit on it?

A little. A 3 in (7.5 cm) cushion may sit closer to 2 1/2 in (6.5 cm) under weight. Plan seat and table heights with that sitting number in mind, not only the nominal thickness.
