# Forest green velvet in an oak window: a letter about box edges and square corners

*Rosa writes to a reader with a deep bedroom window about the shape of a seat: box or knife, square or rounded, and when angles take over.*

> **The quick answer:** In a window recess lined on three sides, a box-edge window seat cushion with square corners is the right shape: it fills the reveal wall to wall and keeps an upright face for the piping. Knife edges taper and leave gaps against the lining, rounded corners suit open benches, and angled corners belong to bay windows cut from a drawing.

## To the owner of a deep bedroom window

To whoever owns this oak window,

You have what I'd call a proper reveal. The window sits back in the wall, and somebody lined the sides and sill with oak veneer so the whole opening reads as a piece of furniture. A window like that deserves a cushion that respects its corners.

This one does. It is a forest green velvet box cushion with off-white piping, cut to the full inside width of the oak lining. The corners are square because the reveal is square, so there's no gap for a sock or a hair tie to vanish into. The box edge gives the velvet an upright face, and the ivory piping runs along both seams so the dark pile doesn't melt into the honey oak. That piping repeats the white linen on the bed, too, which ties the seat to the rest of the room.

It sits back from the floor-length oatmeal linen curtains, so they still draw closed in front of it. The green is the only saturated color in a room of white bedding, an oatmeal throw, a jute-wool rug, a round bedside table and a ceramic lamp with a linen shade. The lamp's warm glow balances the cool daylight on the seat, and the framed abstract print keeps the wall from going blank. Nothing is set on the cushion. The garden does the decorating.

The [box edge versus knife edge pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/) explains the difference in shape, the [velvet shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) holds the deep greens, and there are more [bedroom window seats](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/) to look through. What shape is your window, neighbor: straight, bay, or something stranger?

## Pinned by Rosa

Pins mark the green velvet seat, its ivory piping, the oak lining, the bedside lamp and the jute-wool rug that carries the palette to the window.

1. **Forest-green velvet seat**: The only saturated color in the room, so it is given the full inside width of the reveal.
2. **Off-white piping**: Ivory piping repeats the bedding and stops the dark velvet merging into the oak lining.
3. **Oak-lined reveal**: Veneered oak makes the deep window read as furniture, and the cushion is cut to its inside width.
4. **Ceramic bedside lamp**: A warm lamp by the bed balances the cool daylight falling on the seat.
5. **Jute-wool rug**: A textured flat-weave carries the natural palette from the bed to the window.

## Box, knife, rounded, angled: which edge fits which window

| Edge | What it does | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge, square corners | Upright sides that fill a recess to the wall | Lined reveals and built-in window seats |
| Knife edge | Tapers to one seam and thins out at the rim | Chair pads and loose seats, not wall-to-wall recesses |
| Rounded corners | Softens the front corners, leaves small gaps at walls | Open benches where knees and hips brush past |
| Angled corners | Follows each breaking point of the bay | Bay and trapezoid seats cut from a drawing |

## A bay with five windows, measured point by point

A buyer messaged the workshop with a bay that had five windows instead of the usual three, and wasn't sure anyone could make a cushion for it. The shop asked for a drawing with every line measured between the breaking points, the depth at each point from front to back, and a photo.

The seat came out 16 in (41 cm) deep at its deepest and 115 7/8 in (294 cm) long. The buyer had spotted a listing photo they liked, so the shop identified the fabric and piping in it, and the order went through a custom listing in a different main color with the same piping, at the standard 4 in (10 cm) thickness.

On a multi-angle bay, measure every segment and every depth, not just the overall length. The [bay window cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bay-window-cushions/) show how angled corners follow the glass.

## On the cutting table: the oak-window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat box cushion in a lined reveal |
| Fabric | Forest green velvet |
| Piping | Off-white contrast piping on both seams |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Corners | Square, to meet the oak lining |
| Width | Full inside width of the reveal |
| Standard thickness | 4 in (10 cm) |
| Best for | Deep bedroom windows and reading nooks |

## Buyer questions: backs, bays and the L-shaped corner

**A common question:** How do I order a back cushion to go with my seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Each piece is its own item. Add the backrest at its own size through the same listing. If the back has the same dimensions as a seat piece, order two of that size and note which one is the back. An order that gives one cushion two sets of measurements is paused until you confirm.

**A common question:** Is there a limit to how many angles a bay window cushion can have?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Any number of angles can be made, as long as you send a drawing with every segment measured and the depth at each breaking point. A five-window bay is made the same way as a three-window one, just with more numbers on the page.

**A common question:** On an L-shaped bench, how long should each cushion be so they don't overlap in the corner?

**The workshop's answer:** One seat runs the full length of its wall; the other is shorter by the first seat's depth. For walls of 74 in (188 cm) and 180 in (457 cm) with a 19 in (48 cm) depth, the seats were 74 in and 161 in (409 cm), and the 14 in (36 cm) backs were 74 in and 178 in (452 cm), minus the 2 in (5 cm) backrest thickness. Send wall-to-wall sizes and the shop works it out.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a bay with five windows, measure every segment between breaking points and the depth at each point, not just the overall length.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a window seat cushion have rounded front corners and square back corners?

Yes, if you draw it that way. Square back corners meet the wall cleanly, and rounded front corners are kinder to knees in a narrow room. Mark the corner shape on your drawing, since it changes how the piping turns.

### Why does dark velvet need a pale piping line against wood?

Deep velvet soaks up light, so its edges blur against honey oak or dark paint. A pale welt on both seams draws the box shape back in, and when the piping repeats another pale textile in the room, such as the bedding, the seat looks planned.

### Should a window seat cushion sit behind the curtains or in front of them?

Behind, when the curtains hang across the opening. Set the cushion back far enough that the fabric can fall in front of it when drawn; a cushion that pushes curtains outward leaves a gap of light at night and rubs the hems.
