# Four green backs and one long seat: how porch loveseat cushions hold up to real life

*Callum runs a covered-porch loveseat through a season in his head: sun angles, wet dogs, spilled lemonade and the first frost.*

> **The quick answer:** Forest green outdoor cushions on a covered porch age slowly: the roof keeps off most rain and midday sun, and a deep green hides grass, soil and everyday wear that would show on cream. Four smaller back cushions instead of two long ones can be rotated so they fade and flatten evenly, and self piping keeps the edges from advertising scuffs.

## Pinned by Callum

Pins mark the long seat, the four backs, the ivy post, the stone fireplace and the floor lantern that frames the loveseat.

1. **Long seat cushion**: One continuous seat keeps the loveseat looking tailored.
2. **Four back cushions**: Smaller backs can be pulled out to lounge sideways against the arm.
3. **Ivy on post**: The green cushions are a step darker than the foliage so they don't look faded beside it.
4. **Stone fireplace**: With green blending into the planting, the stonework becomes the focus.
5. **Floor lantern**: Black metal repeats the dark porch details.

## A good berth for a cushion

Covered porch. Stone fireplace. Ivy on the post. That's a good berth for a cushion.

The loveseat is gray resin wicker with one long seat cushion and four back cushions, all forest green with self piping. One continuous seat keeps it tailored. Four backs instead of two means you can pull one out and lean against the arm with your feet up. That's how porches actually get used.

The green sits a step darker than the ivy and the potted plants. Match foliage exactly and the cushions look faded beside it by late summer. Go a shade deeper and they hold their own. Because the green melts into the planting, the eye goes to the stacked stone fireplace and its lantern.

The props pull their weight. The black metal floor lantern with its pillar candle repeats the dark porch details. The terracotta pot brings the only warm color. The white side table gives a glass somewhere to land, and the gray patterned rug hides muddy boots. In shaded porch light, self piping keeps each box shape readable without a bright line that shows every scuff.

The [outdoor acrylic shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and the [outdoor cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/) cover the cloth and the shapes. More covered setups live on the [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) page, and the [winter storage pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) handles the end of the season. What does your porch take the worst of, friend: sun, rain or the dog?

## The daily test, one hazard at a time

- ✓ Sun: the porch roof blocks the high midday sun. Low morning and evening light still reaches the front edge, so turn the seat cushion every few weeks.
- ✓ Rain: blown rain wets the front of the seat first. Stand the cushion on its edge after a storm so water runs out of the seams.
- ✓ Kids: sticky hands land on the backs more than the seat. Four small backs mean four small covers to deal with, not one big one.
- ✓ Dogs: forest green hides muddy paws. Pale fur will show, so keep a lint brush in the side table drawer.
- ✓ Spills: blot, don't rub, and rinse with plain water before it dries.
- ✓ Frost: bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

## The blue that wasn't there

A buyer wanted blue contrast piping on an outdoor lounge cushion for a wooden chair. There was no solid blue in the outdoor range, so the shop piped it with a striped outdoor fabric that had blue in it. When it arrived, the buyer saw stripes, not contrast. Fair complaint.

The shop offered a new cover. This time the buyer picked a light cream body with dark green piping, each named by its fabric code, and moved up to 4 in (10 cm) foam. The first width, 58¼ in (148 cm), had been too tight, so they measured the wooden base again with a tape and sent photos. The new cushion was made at 32¾ x 59 x 4 in (83 x 150 x 10 cm).

Two lessons. Name the exact code for your piping, never 'the blue in the stripe'. And outdoor solids are limited, so check the chart before you fall for a color.

## On the cutting table: the porch loveseat set

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | One long seat cushion, four back cushions |
| Frame | Gray resin wicker loveseat |
| Fabric | Forest green outdoor acrylic |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Back fill options | Shredded foam for a soft lean, solid foam for a firmer panel |
| Setting | Covered stone-and-timber porch |
| Care | Rinse spills, dry on edge, store indoors before frost |
| Best for | Covered porches, screened porches and shaded patios |

## Buyer questions: stripes outside, what to measure, bigger orders

**A common question:** Can I use the ticking stripe for patio cushions that stay out all year?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The ticking stripe is 100% cotton and isn't made for outdoor use. Choose one of the outdoor linen-look fabrics instead: they are water-repellent, UV-resistant and come in natural tones.

**A common question:** Do you want the measurements of my bench, or of the old cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** If the cushions you have now fit well, send their dimensions. If they don't fit, or you want a different thickness, measure the bench itself and send those numbers instead.

**A common question:** Is there a discount if I order a lot of covers at once?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: larger orders are quoted as one bundle. Ten outdoor covers came in under their combined price, and so did a five-cushion kitchen bench set with non-slip backing. Four 16 x 16 in (40 x 40 cm) pillows were also sold together as a discounted set.

> **Tailor's margin:** Name the exact fabric code for outdoor piping. Asking for 'the blue in the stripe' is how a cushion ends up with stripes and no contrast.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will forest green outdoor fabric fade on a covered porch?

Much less than in open sun. A porch roof blocks the strongest midday light, so most exposure comes low in the morning or late afternoon and lands on the front edge. Flip and rotate the cushions every few weeks so any change happens evenly.

### Are four back cushions better than two long ones on a porch loveseat?

For lounging, yes. Four smaller backs can be moved, stacked against an arm or pulled out entirely, and they are easier to carry in before a storm. Two long backs look slightly cleaner but hold you to sitting upright.

### How should outdoor cushions be dried after a summer storm?

Stand each cushion on its edge so water drains out through the seams, and leave space for air to move around it. Don't lay a wet cushion flat on deck boards, where the underside stays damp for days.
