# Forest, Cream and Burgundy Bouclé Cushions, Each Piped in a Sister's Color

*Three plain cushions, three colors, and one rule I learned the hard way: the edge should belong to a neighbor.*

> **The quick answer:** To mix plains, texture and stripes on a custom bench cushion, keep every color at the same depth and let only one surface carry the busy part. Here three plain bouclé cushions in forest, cream and burgundy swap colors for their piping, so texture and outline do the pattern's work. Add a stripe on a pillow, not on a second nubby cushion.

![Stacked forest green, cream and burgundy bouclé box cushions with contrasting piping on a walnut bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/forest-cream-burgundy-boucle-cushions-bold-piping-1600.webp "Three bouclé cushions trade colors for their piping: forest with cream, cream with burgundy, burgundy with forest.")

## Swatch strip: forest, cream, burgundy, walnut

- Forest green — #2F4A38 — Body of the top cushion; the cord on the burgundy one
- Cream — #E9DFCB — The loudest cord, on forest; body of the middle cushion
- Burgundy — #6A1F2B — As piping on cream it hides front-edge wear
- Walnut — #5A3B27 — The bench; dark wood agrees with jewel tones

## Same bouclé box cushion, three piping colors

Right, then. Three box cushions stacked on a walnut bench, and each borrows its piping from a sister: cream cord on forest green, burgundy cord on cream, forest cord on burgundy. Same cloth, same size, same edge. Only the line changes, and look how much the line changes.

Cream on forest is the loud one; the outline jumps. Burgundy on cream is the practical one, because a darker welt gives a pale cushion a tailored edge and hides the scuffing that shows first where legs brush the front. Forest on burgundy is the quiet one, two deep colors meeting in a low, rich outline.

Every cushion is piped on both the top and bottom seams, a [double piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#double-piping) frame around the boxing strip, like a mat around a print. On a thick cushion that makes the whole piece look sharper and more upholstered. The walnut bench is the only prop, and it is the right one.

Why does it work? All three shades sit at the same depth. None is pastel, none is near-black, so any one could sit on a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) run alone and borrow its piping from another. Years ago I paired a navy cushion with baby-pink piping because the swatches looked sweet on my desk. On the window seat it looked like a typo. Match the depth first, dear, then argue about hue.

Mixing stripes, plains and texture, as a checklist:
- One busy surface per piece. [Bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) counts as busy up close.
- Stripes go on a pillow from the [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shelf, not on a second nubby cushion.
- Pull the stripe's darkest color into the piping of the plain cushion.
- Pipe pale cushions in a darker cord.

## Five pins, one per bouclé cushion decision

Five pins, one per decision: three piping pairings, the double seam and the walnut underneath.

1. **Cream piping on forest**: Cream cord on forest green is the highest-contrast pairing in the stack.
2. **Burgundy piping on cream**: A wine-red cord gives a pale cushion a tailored edge that hides wear.
3. **Forest piping on burgundy**: Two deep colors together make a rich, low-contrast outline.
4. **Double piping seams**: Piping runs on both the top and bottom seams, framing the boxing strip.
5. **Walnut bench**: Dark walnut suits the jewel-tone palette.

## Two long runs of tufted linen, and why length costs more

A buyer in the US wanted two long seating runs in tufted linen: one at 58 x 16 x 3 in (147 x 41 x 7.6 cm) and one at 110.5 x 20 x 3 in (281 x 51 x 7.6 cm), in the cream-white shown on the main photo, color 19. The workshop confirmed both custom sizes could be made in real linen.

What surprised them was the arithmetic. Long, thin tufted cushions cost more per square inch than short, deep ones, because the tufting follows the length, and every button along that 110 in run is labor. If the budget pinches, plain beats tufted; the [tufted versus plain Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tufted-vs-plain-cushions/) lays out the trade. Bouclé, for what it's worth, looks finished without a single button. Its texture does that job.

## Buyer questions: tufting on a budget, undersides and a beige velvet

**A common question:** I love the tufted look, but the tufted set is over my budget. What's the cheaper route?

**The workshop's answer:** A tufted set in that style, such as a 70 x 28 x 3 in seat, comes with its backrests and armrests included, which is part of the cost. The less expensive alternative is a non-tufted, foam-filled cushion.

**A common question:** Is the underside of the cushion the same fabric as the top?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, the cushion is the same fabric all the way around. The only exception is the non-slip base option, which replaces the bottom panel with non-slip fabric.

**A common question:** Could you make a 25 x 17 in window seat cushion in a beige velvet or chenille?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Pick the 17 x 25 in option on the custom window seat listing and give the velvet color number from the chart; for that beige it was color 33.

## On the cutting table: the bouclé trio

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Three box cushions, stacked |
| Fabric | Bouclé in forest green, cream and burgundy |
| Piping | Contrast, swapped: cream on forest, burgundy on cream, forest on burgundy |
| Seams | Piped top and bottom, framing the boxing strip |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Base | Walnut bench |
| Palette rule | Three colors at the same depth |
| Best for | Jewel-tone living rooms and dark wood |

> **Tailor's margin:** Pipe a cream bench cushion in a darker cord. The front edge wears first, where legs brush it, and burgundy or forest hides the scuff.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can I order three bouclé cushions, each piped in another cushion's color?

Yes. Give each cushion its body color and its piping color separately in your note, as in forest with cream, cream with burgundy and burgundy with forest. Keep all three shades at a similar depth so every pairing looks intended.

### Does bouclé count as a pattern when I mix it with stripes?

Up close, yes. Its loops make a busy surface, so pair bouclé with plains and put a stripe on a pillow or a separate piece rather than on a second textured cushion. Pull one stripe color into the piping to link them.

### Why pipe a thick bouclé box cushion on both the top and bottom seams?

Two welts frame the boxing strip, which makes a thick cushion look sharper and more upholstered. On bouclé the cord also gives a soft, looped surface a clean edge to hold its shape against.

### Which piping color hides wear on a cream bench cushion?

A darker cord. Burgundy or forest piping on cream hides the scuffing that shows first where legs brush the front edge, and it gives a pale cushion a tailored outline from across the room.
