# A nesting kids floor sofa arch in dusty rose, olive and powder blue corduroy

*Three soft colors, three nesting pieces, one sage wall. Hana looks at what holds a play set together when nothing is tied down.*

> **The quick answer:** A nesting kids floor sofa arch has nothing to tie to, so it holds together by nesting, not by ties. Put the zippers on the base or the back of the curve where small hands don't reach, ask about a non-slip base if the floor is wood or tile, and count and measure every loose piece the day it arrives.

## Pinned by Hana: five places the palette repeats

Five pins, from the dusty rose arch in the center to the prints on the picture ledge.

1. **Dusty rose arch**: A grayed rose keeps the large piece soft on a green wall.
2. **Olive middle arch**: The darker olive band separates rose from blue.
3. **Powder blue dome**: Pale blue at the core adds a cool, fresh finish.
4. **Wooden blocks**: Block colors on the left repeat the arch palette in small doses.
5. **Wall prints**: Abstract prints in rose and olive tie the wall to the arch.

## Three arches, one depth of color

Dusty rose outside. Olive in the middle. Powder blue at the core.

Three colors that rarely share a room. They work here because each is grayed to the same softness. The olive is darker, and it sits between the other two like a band of shadow, so rose never touches blue.

There is no piping. A plain box edge keeps the curves soft, which suits a piece that gets climbed.

The room repeats the palette in small doses. Wooden alphabet blocks stacked on the left. Abstract prints in rose and olive on the picture ledges, beside children's books. A woven storage basket. A cream diamond rug under everything, and linen curtains letting in muted daylight. The sage wall holds it all together.

Children measure comfort with their whole body. They lie in the blue dome, stand on the olive band, and drag the rose arch across the rug to make a tunnel. ## Ties, grip, zipper: the fastening question, piece by piece

**Ties.** Ties need a rail, a spindle, a slat. A play arch on a rug has none of these. So ties are out.

**Grip.** On a rug, the pile holds each piece in place. On wood or tile, a piece can skate when a child lands on it. If your floor is hard, ask whether a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base) can go under the outer arch. The Pattern on [ties and non-slip bases](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) sets out the options.

**Zipper.** Put it where small hands don't go: along the flat base, or across the back of the curve. The faces that get climbed stay plain [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/). More in [zipper placement](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-zipper-placement/).

**Loose parts.** Pieces that aren't joined get moved, stacked, and lost under a bed. Count them when they arrive.

What will sit under yours, rug or bare floor?

Nothing tied.
Everything nested.
The floor does the rest.

## Seat, backrest, two armrests, and one inch short

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a velvet floor seating set for a bench 20 in (51 cm) deep. They needed 24 in (61 cm) of total depth and asked whether the listed 24 in included the 4 in (10 cm) backrest.

It was a set of loose parts: a 20 x 32 x 4 in (51 x 81 x 10 cm) seat, a separate 16 x 32 x 4 in (41 x 81 x 10 cm) backrest, and two loose armrests. Total depth is seat depth plus backrest thickness.

When it arrived, they measured. The seat was 19 in, not 20. The backrest was 15 in, not 16. The corners were not square, and one spot felt lumpy and underfilled. They liked the color and the style.

Measure on arrival. Photograph any shortfall and report it right away.

## Buyer questions: gift pillowcases and a smaller corner

**A common question:** My floor couch came with two small pillowcases but no inserts. Is part of my order missing?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The small pillowcases are a free gift from the workshop, and they are sent without inserts. Nothing is missing from the order.

**A common question:** How big is the corner floor cushion in the photo, and could it be made a little smaller?

**The workshop's answer:** The one in the photo is 32 x 32 in (81 x 81 cm). Smaller sizes, such as 28 or 29 in (71 or 74 cm), can be made.

## On the cutting table: the nesting arch

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Kids floor sofa, three nesting pieces |
| Fabric | Corduroy in dusty rose, olive and powder blue |
| Edge | Box edge, no piping |
| Ties | None; nothing to tie to on a rug |
| Base | Ask about a non-slip base for wood or tile floors |
| Zipper | On the base or the back of the curve |
| On arrival | Count the pieces; measure each one |
| Best for | Playrooms with a rug and room to pull pieces apart |

> A kids floor sofa arch has nothing to tie to, so the zipper belongs on the base and a non-slip underside matters only on wood or tile.

> **Tailor's margin:** Three colors of equal softness nest well. If one is darker, put it in the middle so the other two never touch.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do the pieces of a nesting play arch need to be fastened together?

Usually not. They nest by shape, and children are meant to pull them apart and build them back. Fastening them would take the play away. On a slippery floor, a grippy underside on the outer piece does more than any strap could.

### Where should the zipper sit on a kids floor sofa cover?

On the base or the back of the curve, where it stays out of sight and out of small hands. The front faces get sat on, climbed and leaned against, so they are best left as plain fabric.

### Is corduroy a sensible fabric for a kids play couch?

It has a soft hand and a ribbed surface that feels good to lie on, and a muted mid-tone shows less than pale cream. Brush the wales in one direction to lift pile that has been pressed flat after a long afternoon of play.
