# A dusty rose corduroy star floor cushion under a paper lantern

*A letter from Harlan about a small pink star in a white toddler room, and why corduroy shows a different face to the window, the lamp and the phone.*

> **The quick answer:** A dusty rose corduroy star floor cushion looks warmest in a pale room under diffused light, such as a paper globe shade, because corduroy ribs catch light on one side and shade on the other. Check a cord swatch by the window in daylight and again by lamplight, looking along the ribs and across them.

## About the rose-colored star

My friend,

A pink star in a white room is the warmest thing in it, and the light decides how warm.

I have been looking at this toddler corner a while. White walls, a white canopy, an oak chest of drawers with round knobs on one side and a natural-wood toddler bed on the other. Everything pale. Then, on the floor under the canopy, a star floor cushion in dusty rose corduroy. It anchors the corner without shouting at the oak.

Corduroy is a cloth with a grain you can see. Each rib carries a brushed pile, and light catches one side of the rib and leaves the other in shade. So the same cord shows a different face depending on where the light stands. By the morning window this rose reads cooler and a touch dustier. Under the rice-paper globe at bedtime it goes soft and warm, because a paper shade spreads the light instead of raking it across the ribs. On a phone screen it can look like most anything.

The star has a boxed side, and that strip turns ten corners on its way around. Every face meets the light at a new angle, so the cord shades lighter and darker from point to point. That is no flaw. That is corduroy being alive.

The props were chosen by somebody with sense. The rust square pillow takes its color straight from the stripe in the fringed rug, which ties the star to the floor. A small white star pillow softens the place where canopy meets floor. The carved wooden elephant, the cactus toy and the picture books on the floating shelves belong to the child, and the room lets them. And mind the heights: the top of the pouf sits close to the toddler mattress, so seat and bed look like one family of furniture.

Where does the light in your child's room come from at bedtime? Look at a swatch there before you look at it anywhere else.

More stars live in the [star pouf atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/star-poufs/) and the [kids' room collection](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/). The cord comes off our [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) shelf, and [corduroy wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/) explains the ribs.

## Pinned by Harlan

Five pins, from the rose cord star to the paper lantern that keeps its ribs soft.

1. **Dusty rose cord star**: Rose is the warmest thing in a white-and-oak room, so it anchors the corner without fighting the pale wood.
2. **Rust square pillow**: Its color is lifted straight from the stripe in the fringed rug.
3. **White star pillow**: A small star on the big star softens the point where canopy meets floor.
4. **Paper globe lantern**: Diffused light from a paper shade keeps corduroy ribs soft rather than harsh.
5. **Toddler bed**: The pouf top sits close to the low mattress height, so both read as one furniture family.

## A 120-inch sofa, described in plain parts

A couple in the US wrote to the workshop about a floor sofa 120 in (305 cm) long. They had seen a layout they liked elsewhere: one long seat cushion and one short one, two corner back pillows, a straight back pillow in the middle, and wide, solid support bars underneath.

The shop answered each part in turn. Its bars are solid, not sectional. And the long-plus-short seat could be built on its ordinary 3-seater listing, so nothing new had to be invented. It was made in corduroy.

I tell that story for the lesson inside it. They got what they wanted because they described it in parts: which cushion, how long, which pillow, where. Do the same with a star and its pillows. Name each piece, and the color you saw by daylight.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Part of our floor couch arrived in the wrong color. Do we have to send those covers back?

**The workshop's answer:** Don't ship anything back before you ask, my friend. Photograph the wrong covers the day they arrive and send the photos to the workshop. In past cases it sent the correct covers, plus any missing bars, and because return shipping from the US is expensive, offered to let the buyer keep the wrong-color set at a large discount as a spare.

**A common question:** How high is the floor sofa seat off the ground, and how tall is it to the top of the backrest?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat sits about 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm) off the floor. For the convertible modular couch, 39 x 75 in (99 x 190.5 cm), it is 24 in (61 cm) from the floor to the top of the backrest; an early reply said 39 in and the shop corrected it.

**A common question:** Does the leg section of the corner floor sofa come off, and can I buy a second one?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The L-part is a detachable ottoman that lies fully flat, is about twin size and also unfolds. Extra ottomans are sold separately, and two teddy sofas can be combined into a corner or open-corner layout with straight backrests.

> Corduroy ribs catch light on one side and leave the other in shade, so dusty rose cord reads softer under a paper lantern than in hard midday sun.

> **Tailor's margin:** Take the pillow color from the rug, not from the pouf. One rust square borrowed from a striped rug ties a rose star to the floor.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does corduroy change color in different light?

Corduroy has raised ribs with a brushed pile, so light catches one side of each rib and leaves the other in shadow. Seen along the ribs or across them, under a window or a lamp, the same cord can read lighter or deeper.

### Is a star floor cushion a good seat for a toddler room?

A star pouf sits low, close to the height of a toddler mattress, so a small child can climb on and off without help. Its soft cord and floor-level height make it a friendly spot for picture books.

### How do I choose a pillow color for a star pouf?

Take it from the rug, not from the pouf. Here a rust pillow borrows the rust stripe in the fringed rug, which ties the corner to the floor while the rose star stays the main color.

### Will dusty rose look pink or beige on my screen?

It can look like either. Screens add their own brightness and warmth, and dusty rose sits close to both pink and beige. Ask for a swatch and look at it by the window in the morning and under the lamp at night.
