# Dusty mauve custom bench cushion under built-in shelves: a color notebook

*Engineers rarely write about mauve. But a color is a measurement too, and this one was sampled from a rug.*

> **The quick answer:** Take a bench cushion color from something already in the room and it will look planned. This dusty mauve linen-look cushion borrows the faded rose of a vintage rug, a plum velvet pillow deepens it, and cream books, a pleated linen lamp shade and a sherpa pillow balance the pink. Self piping keeps it quiet beside busy shelves.

## Notebook entry: sampling a color from the floor

Mauve is a risky color. On a swatch card it can look like a bruise. On this library bench it looks like it grew there, and the reason is on the floor.

**Source.** The faded vintage rug carries rose and blue. The cushion is that rose, heathered into a linen-look weave. Nothing was invented; it was sampled.

**Deepen.** A plum velvet pillow is the same hue, several steps darker. Now the mauve has a family instead of standing alone.

**Balance.** Cream-spined books on the built-in shelves, a pleated linen lamp shade, a cream sherpa pillow and full-length linen curtains all pull toward cream. A brass candlestick adds one warm metal point. Together they keep the pink from taking over.

**Light.** This is lamplight, warm and low. Warm bulbs push mauve toward rose; cool daylight pushes it toward gray. Check your swatch at the hour you will actually sit there, partner.

**Line.** The [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) is cut from the same cloth. Next to a wall of book spines, a contrast welt would be one line too many.

**Fit.** The cushion is thick enough to cover the bench lip and wide enough to lounge on. An oatmeal knit throw hangs over the end and softens the one hard box corner you would otherwise see.

The fabric family is [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), which is synthetic; the [real linen vs linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/guides/real-linen-vs-linen-look-cushion-fabric/) Pattern covers the trade-off. What color is already sitting, faded, somewhere in your room?

## Swatch strip: the library bench, sampled

- Dusty mauve — #B48A92 — The cushion: rug rose, heathered
- Plum — #5B2E48 — Velvet pillow, same hue, darker
- Faded rug rose — #C99A96 — The source sample
- Rug blue — #7F93A8 — The cool counterweight underfoot
- Cream — #EEE6D6 — Book spines, lamp shade, sherpa
- Oatmeal — #D6C8B0 — The knit throw over the end

## Pinned by Nate: five readings, rug to shelf

Five pins trace the color upward from the rug: the mauve cushion, the plum velvet pillow, the sherpa pillow, the draped oatmeal throw and the faded rug itself.

1. **Dusty mauve cushion**: A heathered mauve weave with self piping, wide enough to lounge on.
2. **Plum velvet pillow**: A deeper shade of the same color gives the mauve a planned family.
3. **Sherpa pillow**: Cream sherpa balances the pink with a soft, neutral texture.
4. **Draped oatmeal throw**: Hung over the end, it softens the square corner of the box cushion.
5. **Vintage rug**: The faded rose in the rug is where the cushion color was taken from.

## 42 x 18 in, measured inside the bevel

A buyer in the US wanted a tie-on cushion for a family cedar chest used as a seat. Ties were out: the hinges were in the way.

So the cushion was sized to the lid itself. The outer lid measured 44 1/4 x 19 in (112 x 48 cm). The cushion was cut to 42 x 18 in (107 x 46 cm), the flat panel inside the bevel, so the edge profile stays visible and the cushion sits on a true plane. Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

The workshop was straight about sliding: a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base) helps, but nothing stops a cushion from shifting when the lid lifts. The buyer skipped the base to protect the antique finish. After close-up photos of three linen-look candidates, one of them a herringbone, they chose a plain linen-look with self piping.

Size lid cushions to the inner bevel, and accept that a lid will shed its cushion. The Pattern on the [storage bench with a hinged lid](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) has the rest.

## Price, thickness and the missing size

**A common question:** How do I get a price for a custom-size bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Select the size range that covers your dimensions, plus your thickness, on the listing and the price appears right away. Prices are in US dollars; check the shipping line before you pay. For several pieces, send all the sizes together and the workshop quotes the set.

**A common question:** Do the cushions only come 4 in thick, or can I go thinner, like 2 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Four thicknesses are standard: 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm). Choose it in the thickness option or the personalization note after you pick your size. The listing photos show 4 in (10 cm), and most buyers settle on 3 or 4 in.

**A common question:** My window seat size isn't in the dropdown. What do I do?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the nearest listed size and the workshop makes your exact size; a 20 x 48 in option became a 46 x 22 in cushion. Or ask, and your size is added as a new option, as 36 x 72 in and 13.5 x 39.75 in were. Extras such as handles can be left off.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I choose a cushion color that works with wood shelves and books?

Pull it from an object already in the room, such as a rug or a print, then repeat it once in a deeper shade and balance it with cream. Wood and paper spines are warm, so grayed warm colors like mauve sit comfortably beside them.

### Does lamplight change how a mauve cushion looks?

Yes. Warm bulbs push mauve toward rose, and cool daylight pushes it toward gray. Check a swatch on the bench at the hour you use the room most before ordering the full cushion.

### Can a cushion stay put on a hinged chest lid?

Only partly. A non-slip base helps while the lid is closed, but no base keeps a cushion in place once the lid lifts. Sizing it to the inner bevel at least keeps it sitting flat and square.
