# A dusty blue piped cushion between two woven-stripe bench pads, from morning light to lamplight

*Dusty blue is the most changeable color I sew into a custom bench cushion: one color at breakfast, another after supper, a third on your phone.*

> **The quick answer:** A dusty blue bench cushion looks crisp and cool in morning daylight and grayer, more muted, under a warm evening lamp, so check the swatch at both hours before ordering. Cream piping that repeats the cream ground of the striped pads keeps the stack steady in either light. Screens are the least reliable judge; ask for daylight close-ups of the fabric.

![Dusty blue bouclé cushion with cream piping stacked between gray and teal woven-stripe box cushions on oak](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/dusty-blue-piped-cushion-woven-stripe-pads-oak-1600.webp "Two stripes from the same woven family, one plain bouclé between them, and a cream welt to stitch it together.")

## One family of cream, three kinds of light

Right, then. Pattern, plain, pattern: the oldest stacking rule, and it works because both [woven stripes](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/) share one cream ground and one charcoal dash.

The top pad is gray and charcoal with no teal, so the pattern steps down before the plain dusty blue. The bottom pad adds a teal band, the one bright note, kept low. Only the plain cushion is piped, its cream welt lifted straight from the stripes. The bench's rounded oak edge is echoed by the softly rounded corners of the box cushions.

Now the light. Morning daylight is cool, and the blue stays crisp. After dark a warm bulb mutes it toward gray while the honey oak glows. The cream welt stays close to cream, which is why it holds the stack together.

My order of trust for a color, lowest first:

- **Your screen.** Phones warm or cool a photo to taste, and bouclé loops throw shadows that read darker.
- **A chart photo**, shot under studio light.
- **A daylight close-up of the actual fabric**, sent free on request.
- **A swatch on your own [bench](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/)**, at breakfast and again after dark. That verdict I sign.

Give body and piping as separate codes; any chart has several dusty blues. More in [screen vs swatch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/). What color is your hallway at 9 p.m.?

## The stack's palette, morning to night

- Dusty blue bouclé — #8197a9 — Crisp and cool at 9 a.m.; grayer and quieter under a warm lamp.
- Cream welt — #ece3cf — The steady one; repeats the stripes' ground in every light.
- Charcoal dash — #3d3d40 — Holds its line in both lights and frames the top stripe.
- Teal band — #2f6f70 — The bright note, kept low; it deepens toward green at night.
- Honey oak — #c4955c — Warms everything near it, more so after sunset.

## Four checkpoints on the stack

Four pins, from the charcoal dash down to the rounded oak edge.

1. **Charcoal dash stripe**: The top stripe has no teal, so it steps the pattern down before the plain blue.
2. **Cream welt on blue**: A cream welt on dusty blue repeats the cream ground of both stripes and frames the only plain cushion.
3. **Teal stripe base**: The bottom stripe adds teal, the one bright note, low in the stack where it anchors the color.
4. **Rounded oak edge**: The bench's rounded front edge is echoed by the softly rounded corners of the box cushions.

## The 109 in bench and the nearest size

A buyer in the US wanted a soft cream corduroy tufted cushion, 21 x 109 x 4 in (53 x 277 x 10 cm), for an extra-long bench. Cream fusses in the light almost as much as dusty blue, and they considered supplying their own fabric. About 4 3/8 yards (4 m) would have been needed, and the plan proved impractical.

So they ordered from the tufted French-mattress listing, chose 20 x 91 in (51 x 231 cm), the closest option on the menu, and paid a small difference because the real cushion was nearly 20 in (50 cm) longer.

Small gaps between your size and the menu size get absorbed; big ones cost extra.

## Sizes, back cushions and a one-inch margin

**A common question:** My bench needs a 73 in cushion, but the nearest option is 76 in. Do I pay for the longer size?

**The workshop's answer:** You select the 76 in (193 cm) option, and sometimes the workshop refunds part of the difference, as it did for that 73 in (185 cm) cushion. An out-of-standard size has also earned a small goodwill refund.

**A common question:** Can I buy back cushions on their own, made to my size?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Back cushions are made separately, to any size and in any color you choose.

**A common question:** How close to my numbers will the finished cushion be? I'd rather it ran small than big.

**The workshop's answer:** Handmade sizes can vary by about an inch (2.5 cm), so say if you want to err small. When a buyer said 24 in (61 cm) was the absolute maximum, the workshop made the cushion 23 in (58 cm).

> On a stacked bench, pipe only the plain cushion, and take the welt color from the stripes: a cream welt on dusty blue ties three cushions into one set.

> **Tailor's margin:** Photograph a fabric swatch on your own bench at noon and again after dark. If the dusty blue goes gray at night, try the next shade bluer.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a blue cushion look different at night?

Warm bulbs add yellow, which mutes blue toward gray, while morning daylight is cooler and keeps blue crisp. Check any blue swatch at both hours, in the room where the cushion will live.

### Should every cushion in a stacked set have piping?

Not necessarily. Here only the plain dusty blue cushion is piped, in the cream of the striped pads, so the welt frames the one quiet piece while the stripes keep clean edges.

### What is the safest way to order a color I can't see in person?

Ask for daylight close-ups of the exact fabric code and photos of finished cushions in it, both free on request, then confirm with a swatch. Give body and piping codes separately.
