# A dusty blue bouclé window seat cushion, and where the pattern goes

*One plain, nubby cushion under diamond-pane windows. Rosa writes about why texture counts as pattern, and how to bring in a stripe without crowding the glass.*

> **The quick answer:** Under a busy leaded-glass window, a plain window seat cushion works best, because the diamond panes are already the pattern. Bouclé adds texture instead: its loops read as a fine, even grain. If you want a stripe, put it on one pillow in colors already in the room. Round a ledge down to whole inches, so 38 3/4 x 25 3/4 in becomes 38 x 25 in.

## A letter from the window seat

Dear neighbor,

I keep one rule for window seats in old houses, and this photograph keeps it better than I do: the window gets the pattern, the cushion gets the texture.

Look at those leaded diamond panes. Dozens of little lozenges, each one outlined in lead. That is already a pattern, and a fussy one. Lay a striped window seat cushion below it and the two would argue all afternoon.

So the cushion is plain: dusty blue bouclé, box edge, self piping. But plain is not flat. Bouclé is woven from tiny loops, and in cool daylight through old glass each loop throws a small shadow. From across the room it reads as a soft, even grain, a quiet pattern of its own. Texture is the pattern you feel before you see it.

The blue came from outside. Leaded glass and a gray sky are cool already, so a cool mid-blue makes the cushion look like part of the window instead of a sticker on it. Against the cream paneling it still reads as color, just not loud color.

The box edge stops exactly at the lid line of the storage base, so the paneled front stays on show. My grandmother would have hung a skirt over it. She was wrong about that and right about nearly everything else.

Then the props, and there are only three. Eucalyptus stems in a speckled stoneware vase bridge the blue cushion and the cream frames with their gray-green leaves. A cream mug repeats the woodwork. An open book says the seat is deep enough to hold your reading and your coffee beside you. Kids and dogs will bring the fourth and fifth things soon enough. Leave them the room.

## Pinned by Rosa

Five pins, from the dusty blue bouclé to the paneled storage base the cushion leaves on show.

1. **Dusty blue bouclé**: A soft mid-blue reads as color without shouting against cream joinery.
2. **Open book**: The seat is deep enough to hold a book and mug beside you.
3. **Cream mug**: Cream on blue repeats the color of the woodwork below.
4. **Eucalyptus vase**: Gray-green leaves bridge the blue cushion and the cream window frames.
5. **Paneled storage base**: The cushion stops flush with the lid so the paneling stays visible.

## If you want a stripe in the window too

Some of you will want pattern anyway, and I understand. Here is how I'd mix it in a window like this one:

- **Keep the seat plain.** The cushion is the biggest piece of fabric in the window. Let it be the calm one.
- **Put the stripe on a pillow.** One lumbar pillow in a narrow ticking stripe, blue on cream, echoes the lead lines without copying them.
- **Borrow colors, don't add them.** Blue, cream and eucalyptus gray-green are the whole palette. A stripe in those belongs; a red one is a guest who stayed too long.
- **Space the scales apart.** Small diamonds in the glass, a medium stripe on the pillow, the fine grain of bouclé on the seat. Three sizes, no quarrels.

The [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) library is where that pillow lives, and the [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) pages explain how the loops wear. More seats like this one are in the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) atlas and among the [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/). What do you see through your window glass?

## Six and a quarter inches asked, six inches made

A buyer wrote in wanting a window bench cushion 6 1/4 in (16 cm) thick, at about 70 x 22 3/4 in (178 x 58 cm). The shop's thickest standard option is about 6 in (15 cm), and they said so plainly, adding that it gives the same deep, sofa-like feel. They quoted it at that size.

I like that answer. A cushion that deep turns a window seat into a small sofa, good for curling up with a book. Before you go that thick, check how much sill and glass you'll have left above the seat; the [window seat cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/) Pattern walks you through it.

## Buyer questions: a ledge, a filling and a deep red

**A common question:** My window ledge measures 38 3/4 x 25 3/4 in. Which cushion size should I order?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop added a 38 x 25 in (97 x 64 cm) option to the listing, rounding down to whole inches so the cushion sits inside the ledge. The color goes in the order note, and the cushion is 4 in (10 cm) high.

**A common question:** Is there foam inside your cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Tufted cushions are filled with silicone balls rather than foam, though foam filling can be requested. Plain, crease-free seat cushions use seating sponge: 28 density as standard, or 22 density as the lower-cost option.

**A common question:** Which fabric code comes closest to a deep red?

**The workshop's answer:** L52 is the closest deep red; the first pick looked pinker in close-up photos. For contrast piping, the L fabrics are the better fit. The dark red in the main listing photo is 938, and it can be ordered even though it isn't on the swatch card.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can I mix a patterned pillow with a plain bouclé window seat cushion?

Yes, and it usually looks better than a patterned seat. Keep the cushion plain, add one striped or checked pillow in colors already in the room, and vary the scale so the stripe is clearly bigger or smaller than any pattern in the window.

### Does bouclé suit a window seat that gets daily use?

It is soft and hides small marks in its texture, but the loops can catch on claws, zipper pulls and rough jewelry. In a house with a cat that likes the window, keep claws trimmed or pick a tighter weave.

### How thick can a window seat cushion be?

The thickest standard option here is about 6 in (15 cm), which feels like a sofa seat. A buyer who asked for 6 1/4 in (16 cm) was offered that instead. Many window seat orders use 4 in (10 cm).

### Should a cushion cover the front of a storage window seat?

Not if the front is paneled. Stop the box edge at the lid line so the paneling stays on show and the lid lifts cleanly. A cushion hanging over the front hides the joinery and gets pinched when the lid opens.
