# A duck-egg velvet garden bench cushion, read from the gravel path

*Maggie opens with three common questions, then reads a lichen-stained stone bench where an ivory welt, a square box edge and careful corners do the quiet work.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion for an old stone garden bench should follow the slab exactly, in a color lighter than the stone, with contrast piping to outline the edge. Measure the slab in two or three places, since old stone varies. Velvet works on a garden bench on fine days, but store it indoors between them.

## Buyer questions, before I say a word about the bench

**A common question:** A fabric code I saw in your photos, L54, isn't on the color chart anymore. Can I still order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. It came off the current chart only because fewer people choose it, not for quality reasons and not because it was discontinued. The fabric is still in stock.

**A common question:** For a bench with a back, should I get one long back cushion plus two small pillows, or two back cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Two back cushions on the one seat cushion. It is the cleaner arrangement, and two equal pieces stay in place better than a single 50 in (127 cm) back cushion with two small pillows.

**A common question:** Is linen L27 more gray or more beige? I'm after a gray-sand color.

**The workshop's answer:** L27 is a grayish beige, and the workshop recommended it for a gray-sand look, with an offer to send a clearer photo the next day.

## Pinned by Maggie from the gravel path

Five pins, from the flower basket and the cream mug to the ivory welt and the uneven stone leg.

1. **Flower basket**: The basket sits on the far end, which leaves the near end clear for sitting.
2. **Cream mug**: A firm top keeps a full mug upright on the cushion.
3. **Throw over the end**: Linen hanging over the end hides the join between cushion and stone.
4. **Ivory piped front edge**: Pale piping picks out the cushion edge against the shadowy lavender.
5. **Stone bench leg**: Old stone varies in height, so measure the top slab in two or three places.

## Where the hand-finishing shows on a stone bench

Old stone is never level, and a cushion that pretends otherwise looks bought, not made. Right, then: this one follows the long slab exactly, end to end, and sits well above it, soft enough to take the chill off a lichen-stained seat.

The color is duck-egg [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/), a pale blue a shade lighter than the stone. That choice is the only reason you can see the cushion at all. Put a slate or moss velvet here and it would sink into the gray.

The ivory piping does the rest. Against dark lavender and ivy, a pale blue edge would blur by golden hour; the welt draws the box edge in one clean line. I judge every cushion by its welt. A straight one tells you somebody took the corners slowly and turned the cord without a pucker. I once piped a window seat gray-on-gray against gray paneling and spent a whole winter pretending I liked it.

The styling is bunched at the far end on purpose. The basket of sweet peas and lavender, the cream mug, the linen throw over the end: all of it leaves the near half open for sitting. The throw also hides the join between cushion and stone, an old upholsterer's courtesy. The mug stays upright because the top is firm.

A velvet cushion belongs on a [patio or porch bench](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) on fine days and indoors between them; [velvet bench cushion care](https://cushionguide.com/guides/velvet-bench-cushion-care/) covers the rest. What is your bench made of, dear?

## The understairs bench with one angled end

A buyer wrote to the workshop needing a seat pad for an understairs bench: 57 x 27 in (145 x 69 cm), angled on the side where it meets the stairs, with no carry handle. Plain enough, until you remember that an angled end has two measurements, not one.

The workshop asked for the bench model and the sizes first, then sent beige and cream velvet options from the full color chart, so the choice was made on real shades. The part I underline twice: which end is angled, and by how much, goes on a drawing. Left or right is not a detail you leave to memory. [Understairs bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/understairs-and-stair-landing-bench-cushions/) and [the custom shape drawing](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-shape-cushion-drawing/) show how to draw one.

## Five hand-finish details to check when the box arrives

- ✓ The welt runs straight along the front edge, with no wander at the middle of a long cushion.
- ✓ The piping turns each corner in one smooth curve, without puckers or a flattened cord.
- ✓ Top and bottom panels line up, so the box edge stands square instead of leaning.
- ✓ The zipper sits along the back edge, out of sight from the path.
- ✓ The velvet nap runs the same way on every panel, so the color reads as one piece.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a stone bench top in two or three places, not once. Write every number on the drawing you send.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a velvet bench cushion stay outside on a garden bench?

Velvet suits a garden bench on fine, dry days, but it is an indoor fabric at heart. Bring it in overnight and between sunny spells. If the cushion must live outside, choose an outdoor acrylic instead.

### How do I measure an old stone bench for a cushion?

Measure the top slab's length and depth in two or three places, because old stone varies in height and width. Put every figure on a simple drawing, and mark any angled or rounded end.

### What piping color shows up best on a pale blue cushion outdoors?

Ivory or a warm cream. A pale blue edge can blur against dark foliage and evening shadow; a light welt outlines the box edge so the cushion reads clearly from across the garden.
