# The hand-finished details on a dove gray porch swing cushion

*A white-railed porch, a hanging swing, a glass of lemonade sweating on the side table. Rosa reads the quiet craft in one gray cushion, after a conversation with a buyer who asked the right question.*

> **The quick answer:** A porch swing cushion should stop just short of the swing arms, sit a shade darker than the painted swing, and stay moderately thin so feet reach the deck. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), with 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) on request. Measure inside the arms at the front and the back, because many swings taper.

## Is four inches thick enough? A conversation about a swing bed

One buyer wrote in about a wooden outdoor swing platform, a one-piece cushion with a backrest at 51 x 82 in (130 x 208 cm), and asked the question everybody asks: will it be thick enough? The workshop said the standard is 4 in (10 cm) and offered 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm), with the thicknesses quoted side by side.

The buyer found a cheaper local option in the end, and the workshop explained plainly why: an oversized piece takes more foam, more fabric and more hands. No hard feelings on this porch. A swing bed that size is a small mattress, and it gets priced like one.

What I love about that conversation is the question itself. Thick enough for what? Napping wants more foam than sitting. Sitting wants feet on the deck. Pull up a chair and decide which one your swing is for before you pick the number. [Swing bed cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/swing-bed-cushions/) covers the napping kind.

## Buyer questions: templates, dropdowns and tie straps

**A common question:** My rocking chair has a curved wooden seat. How do I measure it for a cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Make a paper template. Lay paper on the seat, trace the edge, cut it out and write the widest width and the front-to-back depth on it. Lay it flat and photograph it from directly above with a tape measure in the shot; there's no need to mail it. The craftsmen may mark straight sections on the photo and ask for a couple of extra edge measurements. [Rocking chair cushion templates](https://cushionguide.com/guides/rocking-chair-cushion-template/) walks through it.

**A common question:** My chair size isn't in the dropdown. How do I order cushions for a set of chairs or bar stools?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the size range that covers the cushion's widest and deepest measurements, then write the exact size, thickness and fabric code in the personalization box. For a trapezoid or unusual seat, upload a drawing with the measurements marked. For eight identical chairs, set the quantity to eight; if sizes differ, place separate orders. Square bar stool cushions work the same way.

**A common question:** Can each dining chair cushion get two straps so I can tie it on?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order through the dining chair cushion listing, where ties are an option at checkout, so there's nothing extra to write.

## Reading the swing: craft you notice only when it's missing

Look first at where the cushion stops: just short of the swing arms, at both ends. That gap is deliberate. A cushion jammed against the arms rubs every time the swing moves, and by August the corners are fuzz.

The dove gray sits one shade darker than the white-painted swing, so the cushion reads as a finished piece and not a patch of paint. Self piping keeps the box edge crisp without drawing a line around it. The cushion is kept moderately thin, so a grown-up's feet still reach the porch boards for that little push.

The galvanized chains pass outside the cushion line. No cut-outs, nothing to fray. When chains do cross a seat, a [notch](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#notch) is the tailor's answer, and it has to be finished neatly to last a summer of swinging.

Then the pillows, all at one end, which leaves room for two. Navy and white ticking, the porch classic, hides wear on the corner everybody leans on; [navy ticking stripe cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/navy-ticking-stripe-cushions/) has more. Powder blue links the gray seat to the painted porch ceiling. The cream botanical print adds a third scale of pattern. The Boston fern in its wicker basket hangs at head height and balances the long line of the swing, and the lantern and lemonade tell you what hour this porch is for.

So tell me, neighbor: how wide is your swing at the front, and at the back? [Porch swing cushion sizes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/porch-swing-cushion-sizes/) explains why both numbers matter. More swings live under [porch swing cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/porch-swing-cushions/), and [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) is the cloth for a covered porch like this one.

## Pinned by Rosa: five marks on the white-railed porch

Five pins, from the gap at the swing arms to the fern basket hanging at head height.

1. **Gray swing seat cushion**: The cushion stops just short of the arms so it cannot rub as the swing moves.
2. **Ticking stripe pillow**: Navy ticking is the porch classic and hides wear on the corner people lean on.
3. **Powder blue pillow**: A soft blue links the gray seat to the painted porch ceiling.
4. **Galvanised swing chain**: Chains pass outside the cushion line, so no cut-outs were needed.
5. **Hanging fern basket**: Greenery at head height balances the long horizontal of the swing.

## Hand-finishing details worth asking for on a swing cushion

- ✓ A zipper on the back edge, against the swing back, where nobody sees it
- ✓ Self piping cut from the same cloth, so the edge stays crisp without an outline
- ✓ Ties placed from your sketch, at the posts and slats the cushion really meets
- ✓ Notches finished neatly wherever chains or posts cross the seat
- ✓ Measurements taken inside the arms at the front and the back, for swings that taper

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a porch swing inside the arms at the front and again at the back. Many swings taper, and a cushion cut to the wider number bunches.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How much room should a swing cushion leave at the arms?

Enough that the cushion never presses on the arms while the swing moves. Cut it to the inside measurement, and check the front and back widths separately, since many swings taper. A snug fit at rest becomes a rubbing fit in motion.

### Should the pillows on a porch swing match the seat cushion?

Coordinate rather than match. One classic stripe, one solid pulled from the porch paint or ceiling, and one print in a different scale give variety without clashing. Group them at one end so two people still fit.

### Is a thicker porch swing cushion more comfortable to sit on?

For napping, often yes; for sitting, not always. A thick cushion raises the seat, so shorter legs lose the deck and the gentle push that keeps a swing moving. Start at 4 in (10 cm) and go thicker for swing beds.

### How do swing chains that cross the seat change the cushion?

The cushion needs notches where the chains pass, measured from the seat edges to each chain. Finished neatly, they let the cushion lie flat. When the chains hang outside the seat, as on this swing, no cut-outs are needed.
