# A dove gray outdoor bench cushion under a wisteria pergola, built for the long sit

*Callum reads a marbled gray seat on silvered teak, and what a garden bench cushion needs if you plan to stay out there with a book until the light goes.*

> **The quick answer:** A garden bench cushion made for long sitting needs one full-length seat with no seams underneath, a box edge that holds its shape, and a color that won't fight the planting. Here dove gray outdoor acrylic with self piping matches the silvered teak, so the wisteria and roses carry the color while the seat carries you.

## Pinned by Callum

Pins run from the marbled seat up to the wisteria, then down to the trug of peonies and the pot of basil.

1. **dove gray marbled seat**: Gray matched to silvered teak lets the flowers take all the color.
2. **cream pillow**: One pillow at the far end leads the eye into the border.
3. **wisteria overhead**: The purple canopy is why the cushion stays neutral.
4. **trug of peonies**: Cut peonies and secateurs suggest someone just stepped away.
5. **basil in terracotta**: A small pot at the bench foot balances the trug on the other side.

## A gray seat under a purple roof

Some benches are for a quick sit. This one is for the whole afternoon.

It is a weathered teak bench on gravel, under a pergola heavy with wisteria. Roses climb one side. Delphiniums, clematis, lavender and clipped box fill the rest. That is a lot of color. So the cushion steps back.

The garden bench cushion is dove gray outdoor acrylic with faint white marble veining. The gray matches the silvered teak almost exactly. From ten paces the bench looks cushioned, not decorated. The purple overhead is the reason. Put a loud print under that canopy and the two would argue all summer.

Now read it as a seat for long sitting. It is one piece, the full length of the bench, so nobody sits on a seam. The box edge with self piping keeps the front square, and the edge under your knees doesn't round off after an hour. One cream pillow sits at the far end. It leads the eye into the border, and it gives the small of your back something to meet when you turn sideways with a book.

The props say somebody lives out here. A wooden trug of white peonies with secateurs, set down mid-job. A terracotta pot of basil at the other foot, balancing it. Soft summer light. Nothing staged too hard.

Cloth is only half the story, friend. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Read [water-repellent versus waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) before the first storm, then browse the [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) shelf and the [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) in the Atlas.

## Anatomy of a seat for a long afternoon

- ✓ One cushion the full length of the bench, so nobody sits on a seam.
- ✓ Box edge with self piping, so the front holds its line under your knees.
- ✓ Depth measured square, front to back, never along a slanted side.
- ✓ Zipper on the back edge, where it stays out of sight.
- ✓ A loose pillow at the end you lean on, for the small of the back.
- ✓ Color matched to the weathered wood, so the planting carries the show.

## Four edges and a missing depth

A buyer wrote in with a drawing of a symmetrical trapezoid window seat. Angled sides B, about 14½ in (37 cm) each. Long front C, about 51½ in (131 cm). Shorter back D, about 43 in (109 cm). About 2⅜ in (6 cm) thick, with piping. Both angled sides identical, they confirmed, and the zipper on the back edge, D.

A good drawing. One number short. The shop flagged it: no front-to-back depth, E. The buyer measured and sent it, about 13¾ in (35 cm). Then the shop asked for a photo of the space before cutting.

Different seat, same weather. Any cushion that isn't a plain rectangle needs its square depth, and every order should say where the zipper goes. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) asks for both before it asks for anything else.

## On the cutting table: the wisteria bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Garden bench cushion, one full-length rectangle |
| Fabric | Outdoor acrylic, dove gray with white marble veining |
| Piping | Self |
| Edge | Box |
| Pillow | One cream scatter pillow at the far end |
| Zipper | Back edge, stated on the order |
| Tolerance | About ½ to ¾ in (1–2 cm), normal for handmade |
| Best for | Benches under planting and long reading afternoons |

## Buyer questions: tolerance, stock and one long seat

**A common question:** My cushion came out a little different from the size I ordered. How much difference is normal?

**The workshop's answer:** Cushions are handmade, so a tolerance of about ½ to ¾ in (1–2 cm) is normal. The shop checks the production size, for example 23½ x 53½ x 4 in (60 x 136 x 10 cm), against your numbers and asks whether the alcove is truly square, because a rectangular cushion in an angled space will look off.

**A common question:** The listing says sold out. Can I still order?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Sold out only means the listing's stock count ran low after a run of orders; the shop refreshes it quickly so you can go ahead.

**A common question:** Can one long bench cushion replace the three seat cushions on my sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One long cushion in place of three gives a clean, unbroken seat, and many buyers do it. Send the length, width and thickness plus the fabric code, and the shop will quote it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Handmade cushions carry about ½ to ¾ in (1–2 cm) of tolerance; if a seat sits crooked, check whether the bench is truly square first.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I keep an outdoor bench cushion from fighting the flowers?

Match it to the wood or stone, not the planting. Dove gray against silvered teak lets roses, delphiniums and wisteria take the color, and the bench reads as part of the garden instead of a separate object.

### Where should the zipper sit on a bench cushion?

On the back edge, where nobody sees it. Say so on the order or mark it on the drawing; one buyer put the zipper on the short back edge of a trapezoid seat and wrote it beside the letter D.

### Is one pillow enough on a long garden bench?

For looks, yes: one cream pillow at the far end leads the eye along the seat. For long reading sessions, put the pillow at the end you lean on, so the small of the back has support when you sit sideways.
