# A denim blue daybed cushion and bolster, and the small details that finish it

*A daybed in gray daylight. Blue on dark wood, one bolster, one lumbar. The details that make it look finished are small, and each one has to be asked for.*

> **The quick answer:** A daybed cushion reads as a sofa when a round bolster spans its full length as the backrest and a single lumbar pillow sits in front, keeping the seat deep. Order it made to measure from the mattress length, width and thickness, and write every detail from your reference photos, such as a strap or a piping color, into the order notes.

## Blue on walnut, read slowly

This [daybed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/) is a denim blue [linen-look weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), piped in navy. On pale oak the same blue would look lighter and more casual. On walnut it deepens. The room turns a little traditional.

The bolster runs the full length and does the work of a backrest. One oatmeal lumbar sits in front of it. Only one. A second would push you forward and make the seat shallow.

The cream fringed throw is folded over the seat, not draped. It repeats the linen of the lamp shade and lightens the blue where a hand falls.

Above, the botanical print, the round mirror and the olive tree stand at three different heights. That staggered line frames a long, low shape without crowding it. Leave a hand's width of floor around the base, and the jute rug does the rest.

What is behind your daybed now: a wall, a window, a row of pillows?

## Pinned by Hana: 5 finishing details on the denim daybed

Five places where the finishing shows.

1. **Round bolster**: The bolster spans the full length and acts as the backrest.
2. **Oatmeal lumbar**: One textured lumbar in front of the bolster adds depth without crowding the seat.
3. **Fringed throw**: The folded cream throw repeats the lamp shade and lightens the blue.
4. **Walnut base**: Dark walnut deepens the blue compared with a pale oak frame.
5. **Olive tree**: A tall plant at the end balances the long, low shape.

## The bolster that came without its strap

A buyer in the US sent reference photos of a tufted daybed mattress with a round bolster held by a strap. The order was a 75.9 x 35 x 4.5 in mattress and a bolster 6.25 in across and 35 in long, in linen.

The bolster arrived without a strap. A strap is not standard, and it was not written on the order. The workshop made a replacement with a strap in one to two weeks. It also said plainly that perfectly flat bolster ends are near impossible, because of the filling.

Nobody was careless. The detail lived only in a photo.

## Piping, bolster ends, tufting and mattress thickness

**The piping line.** Navy on denim is a quiet contrast, but it is still a line. It has to run straight along the front and turn each corner without drifting.

**The bolster end.** A firmly filled bolster domes a little at each end. Choose a [bolster size](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/) knowing that.

**Tufted or plain.** The buyer's reference mattress was tufted. This one is plain. Both are choices. Name yours.

**The mattress thickness.** A cover is made to the mattress, not the frame. An 8 in mattress and a 9.5 in mattress need different covers.

Small things.
Asked for plainly.
Then they are there.

## Buyer questions: size, fit and fur

**A common question:** What does a large daybed or floor-mattress cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Price follows size. Past seat-only quotes climbed from about 50 x 50 in through 38 x 75 in to pieces near 31.5 x 96 in (80 x 243 cm). Send your exact length, width and thickness for a quote.

**A common question:** Will your Hemnes daybed cover fit a mattress that's 8 in or 9.5 in thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, because the cover is made to measure. Write the mattress thickness in the order notes; after purchase the workshop asks for the length, width and thickness, for example a 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in cover.

**A common question:** We have cats and small kids. Is velvet a sensible daybed fabric, and can it go in the washer?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop's velvet is durable and pet-friendly: its tight weave resists snags from claws, it spot-cleans easily, and it machine-washes at 86°F (30°C). It was recommended over linen for a designer's client with cats and small children. Heavier pet-bed fabrics are too stiff for a comfortable slipcover.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write your mattress thickness in the order notes. A daybed cover is made to the mattress, so 8 in and 9.5 in need different covers.

> A bolster ordered from a reference photo arrives without a strap unless the strap is written in the order notes. Name every detail you can see.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a blue daybed cushion look darker on a walnut frame?

Dark wood deepens the blue beside it. The same denim linen-look on a pale oak frame reads lighter and more casual; on walnut it turns richer and a little traditional. Hold a sample against your own frame before you choose.

### How many pillows does a daybed with a bolster need?

Fewer than you think. A full-length bolster already works as the backrest. One lumbar in front adds depth and texture; each extra pillow pushes you forward and takes seat depth away.

### What length suits a round bolster on a daybed?

As long as the edge it rests against. In one past order, a 35 in bolster matched a mattress 35 in wide; in this photo the bolster runs the full length as the backrest. Give the diameter too.
