# Denim blue velvet corner bench cushions: seating more people between two windows

*Two windows, one corner, a table's worth of guests. The trick in this photo is that the L is really two cushions, and that is what makes it good for company.*

> **The quick answer:** For an L-shaped bench cushion that seats a crowd, order two separate seats, one short and one long, that butt together in the corner instead of one L piece; each lifts and re-covers on its own. Choose firm high-density foam so guests sit up at the table, and keep back cushions slim where radiators sit below.

## Why a corner seats more people

White shaker storage benches wrap the corner between two windows. On them, denim blue [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) seats and backs, every edge piped in ivory. The walls are a blue-gray, so the velvet ties them to the white boxes below.

An [L-shaped bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/l-shaped-cushions/) is the easiest extra chair in the house. No legs to trip on, no chairs to drag in from the garage. Guests slide along until everyone fits.

The props keep the geometry friendly. A woven rattan pendant softens the crisp joinery. A striped cotton rug repeats the ivory piping at floor level. Paperbacks on the sill and a plant in a clay pot say people actually sit here. White panel radiators under the windows set one rule, and the back cushions obey it: slim enough for warm air to rise past.

## Five places the plan shows

Where the corner was solved, and where the room helps.

1. **Left back cushion**: Back pads stay thin enough under the sill that radiator heat can still rise past them.
2. **Right back cushion**: The two back pads meet in the corner with piping on every edge, so the join reads as deliberate.
3. **Two-piece seat**: One short and one long seat butt together instead of a single L piece, which is easier to lift and re-cover.
4. **Rattan pendant**: A woven shade softens the crisp white joinery.
5. **Striped rug**: Neutral stripes pick up the ivory piping at floor level.

## Two seats, not one L

Look where the seats meet. One short, one long, butted together instead of a single mitered L. Two straight pieces lift off two storage lids, and a spill on one cover means one cover in the wash.

The backs meet in the corner too, piping on every edge, so the join reads as a line someone drew on purpose. The [corner joint Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-cushion-corner-joint/) covers which piece owns the corner.

The photographs around this one show the same split: teal velvet under a gallery wall, orchid pink with black piping, a buttercup stripe beside a pedestal table. For firm dinner seating, try your sizes in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/). How many people do you want around that table on a holiday?

## Two green pads for a lounge corner

A buyer wrote in wanting two separate velvet seat pads to form an L: 47 1/4 x 23 5/8 in (120 x 60 cm) and 51 1/8 x 23 5/8 in (130 x 60 cm). Fairly high, firm enough that nobody sinks, a clean modern top with no tufting or buttons, in a fresh grass green.

The workshop recommended high-density cold foam, which holds a stable shape without wrinkling. The buyer's next question was whether the pads could take piping in a contrast color. Yes, and this photograph is what that looks like.

## From people planning a nook

**A common question:** The size I need, 26 x 80 x 3 in, isn't in the size menu. How do I order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the closest option (here 24 x 80) and type your exact size and fabric in the personalization box; production works from that box. For several cushions, add each size to the cart as its own item. An order paid as one cushion, or in the wrong size, has to be redone.

**A common question:** Do you make thinner 2 or 3 inch cushions, or only 4 inch?

**The workshop's answer:** Any thickness is possible. The standard options are 2, 3 and 4 in, and custom orders have run from 3/4 in (2 cm) window seats to 8 in (20 cm) seats. Mention the thickness in the note.

**A common question:** Do the covers come off for washing, even the velvet ones?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cover opens with a hidden zipper and goes in the machine on a gentle cycle below 86°F (30°C), velvet included.

> **Tailor's margin:** A two-piece L-shaped bench cushion beats one big L: each seat lifts off its own storage lid and goes in the wash on its own.

## The build

| Best for | Kitchen nooks and window corners |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a corner bench have back cushions under the windowsills?

Yes, as long as they stay slim. In this nook the back pads sit below the sills and above white panel radiators, thin enough that warm air still rises past them.

### Why butt two seats together instead of one mitered L?

Two straight seats are easier to lift off storage lids and to remove for re-covering. With piping on every edge, the corner join reads as a design line rather than a gap.

### Is velvet sensible on a dining bench?

On this bench it unzips and washes on a gentle cycle below 86°F (30°C). Ask for a zipper on every seat and back so each cover comes off on its own.
