# A denim-blue chair cushion with ties, and where the money should go

*A letter for anyone pricing a cushion for the chair they work in all day, with my spend list, my save list, and one confession.*

> **The quick answer:** For a chair cushion with ties that you sit on all day, spend on the foam and on measuring the seat itself, and keep the trim simple. One real recommendation was 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) of 32-density high-resilience foam wrapped in batting. Measure the seat width, seat depth and back height, never the chair's overall size.

## A letter from the desk chair

Two bows at the back spindles are all that keep this denim-blue cushion square through a day of sitting down and getting up.

I'm writing from the other side of a budget conversation, so let me be plain. The photograph shows an oak [spindle-back chair](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#spindle-back-chair) at a white built-in desk, morning light, a laptop, a notebook with a pen, and one speckled stoneware mug. On the seat sits a thick box cushion in a denim-blue linen-look, nearly as deep as the seat frame, which is what turns a hard spindle chair into a place you can work for hours.

The cream piping repeats the white desktop and the mug. The ties are cut from the body cloth and bowed around the rear spindles, so they look deliberate rather than rescued. Nothing else is on the desk, which keeps the eye on blue against honey oak. Tidy, and cheap to copy.

Here's the confession. Years ago I talked a buyer into a fancy contrast welt and let them skimp on the foam. The welt still looked lovely when the seat had gone flat. I have ordered my priorities differently ever since, and the table below is the result. How many hours a day does your chair actually work? Start with the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/), and if you're unsure how firm to go, the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/).

## Pinned by Maggie: the working chair

Five pins, from the tie bows at the spindles to the mug that repeats the piping.

1. **Left tie bow**: Ties loop around a rear spindle so the cushion stays square when the chair is pushed in and out.
2. **Right tie bow**: Ties are cut in the body fabric, so the bows read as a detail rather than a fix.
3. **Cream piped corner**: Cream piping echoes the white desktop and the stoneware mug.
4. **Laptop on desk**: Minimal desk styling keeps attention on blue against honey oak.
5. **Stoneware mug**: A cream mug quietly repeats the piping color at eye level.

## Where to spend and save on a tie-on chair cushion

| Part | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Foam core | Spend | It carries every hour of sitting; ask for high-resilience foam wrapped in batting |
| Measuring | Spend your time | Overall chair size is not enough, and a wrong size means a remake |
| Fabric for the place | Spend | Chairs that live outdoors need outdoor linen-look; cotton ticking stays inside |
| Zipper | Check it | A zipper sized to the shape lets the foam out, so the cover can be washed |
| Ties | Save | Cut from the body fabric, they look deliberate and need no hardware |
| Contrast piping | Optional | A looks choice, not a comfort one |

## Two metal armchairs and one number too few

A buyer messaged the workshop about two metal garden armchairs in a country-house style. They wanted deep seat and back cushions with piping, in a timeless linen-look or a fine ticking stripe, to stay outside year-round. All they had was the chair's overall size: about 20 3/4 x 22 1/4 x 36 in (52.7 x 56.7 x 91.5 cm).

The workshop said that wasn't enough. Once the chairs arrived, it needed the width between the armrests, the seat depth, and the back height they wanted. It recommended seats 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) thick in 32-density high-resilience foam wrapped in batting, with ties at the back corners. And it steered them to the outdoor [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), because the ticking stripe is 100% cotton and not suited to outdoor use. ## Buyer questions: zippers, a folding ottoman, bundles

**A common question:** My chair pad is a trapezoid, wider at the front. Where does the zipper go, and will the foam be a fight to get out for washing?

**The workshop's answer:** No fight. The workshop sews the cover and inserts the foam itself, so the zipper is placed and sized to let the foam slide in and out even when the front is wider than the back. Upload a drawing with the back width, front width and depth, such as 15 in (38 cm) across the back and 18 3/4 in (47.6 cm) across the front.

**A common question:** Is the ottoman corduroy, and does it fold?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes to both. Its two stacked layers are connected, so it opens flat or folds back, and the layers can be made as separate pieces on request.

**A common question:** Can I buy only the ottoman, without the sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, the ottoman is sold on its own. Ordered together with the corner sofa, though, it was offered as a bundle that added roughly half its standalone price.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cotton ticking stays indoors. If a chair cushion lives outside all year, pay for outdoor linen-look and keep the stripe for the kitchen.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a tie-on cushion for a hard wooden chair be?

Thick enough to soften the seat without lifting you too far. For deep armchair seats the workshop suggested 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm); at a desk, check that your knees still clear the desktop at the new height.

### Is linen-look fabric a good choice for a desk chair cushion?

Yes, for looks and texture: it gives the relaxed weave of linen on a cushion that sees daily use. If the chair ever moves outdoors, ask for the outdoor linen-look version rather than an indoor one.

### Is a zippered cover worth it on a chair cushion?

If you ever want to wash it, yes. A zipper sized to the cushion's shape lets the foam come out cleanly, so the cover can go in the wash instead of being spot-cleaned for its whole life.
