# A slim denim blue corduroy window seat cushion in a terracotta library nook

*Pull up a chair. This nook has one blue cushion, two brass lamps and a lesson about proportion I learned from a bolster that nearly came out the size of a beach ball.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion in a tall built-in nook looks best slim, running wall to wall with no end gaps. Here a denim blue corduroy seat sits low against a terracotta paneled base, so the paneling, shelves and lamps carry the height. When you add bolsters, state both numbers: a 7 in diameter by 20 in long roll is very different from a 20 in diameter one.

The kilim rug ties the two colors together at floor level.")

## One blue cushion in a room of terracotta

Everything in this little library is one color except the cushion. Shelves, paneling, window reveal: all the same terracotta. That's the trick, neighbor. Paint the whole built-in one shade and it reads as a single piece of carpentry, and whatever sits on top gets to be the star.

The star here is a [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) in denim blue [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), the only cool color at eye level. It runs wall to wall between the bookcases, which a true built-in needs. No gaps at the ends for paperbacks, crumbs and the odd crayon to vanish into.

Now the proportion. The paneled base is tall; the cushion is slim. You might think a tall seat wants a fat cushion to match, but it's the other way around. A slim cushion lets the tongue-and-groove show, and the paneling is the handsome part. A plush one would swallow it.

The self piping keeps the edge tidy without adding a third color, and the corduroy ribs run one way, so the seat reads as one smooth band of blue in that soft gray daylight.

Then the props, each with a job. Two brass swing-arm lamps, one each side, make this an evening seat, not just a sunny-afternoon one. A ceramic bowl and a stack of magazines on the sill hold whatever you set down. The kilim underfoot repeats both the rust and the blue, so the cushion looks chosen with the room rather than bought for it. And the black wire lounge chair across the way is a second seat, because a nook is better for two.

For a nook like this, take the cushion color from your rug, not your paint. More ideas live under [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/). What color is the rug under your window?

## Pinned by Rosa: five things this nook got right

Five pins, from the denim corduroy seat to the kilim that ties the blue and the rust together.

1. **Denim blue corduroy**: The only blue surface at eye level, so it reads as the room's cool accent.
2. **Paneled seat base**: Base, shelves and sill share one paint color, so it all reads as one piece of joinery.
3. **Brass swing-arm light**: A reading light on each side makes this a seat for evenings, not just daylight.
4. **Kilim rug**: The rug repeats both the rust and the blue, tying cushion to walls.
5. **Wire lounge chair**: A second seat opposite makes the nook a place for two.

## Seven inches across, not twenty

A buyer ordered a 20 x 73 in window seat cushion and asked for two cylinder armrest pillows to go with it. We read '20' and started picturing bolsters 20 inches across. That would have been a pair of round ottomans parked on a window seat.

The buyer set us straight: 7 in diameter, 20 in long, in the same linen as the seat with a contrasting piping. Happy with how it all turned out, they came back.

The second order was for outdoor chair and back cushions with rounded corners, and they had their heart set on chenille. The shop steered them away from it, because their climate was humid, toward mildew-resistant outdoor fabrics, and sent close-up photos so the new colors could be matched to the first set.

Two lessons from one family. Give a bolster as diameter and length, both, with the words. And match the fabric to the weather before you match it to the sofa.

## Slim or plush on a tall built-in

How the two thicknesses behave on a paneled window seat like this one.

| | Slim, around 4 in (10 cm) | Plush, 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Paneled base | Stays in view | Mostly hidden |
| Seat height | Adds about 4 in to the bench | Adds 6 to 8 in to the bench |
| Look | Tailored, part of the carpentry | Soft, closer to a daybed |
| With bolsters | A 7 in roll sits in proportion | Wants a fatter roll to keep up |
| Best when | The base is tall and handsome | The base is plain or low |

## Questions from the reading-nook crowd

**A common question:** Does the smooth leather-look fabric actually feel like leather?

**The workshop's answer:** Close to it. It has a very smooth, premium hand that recalls soft, good leather, but it is still a woven textile with a textile's comfort and durability. An older range from the same family is no longer made, so similar colors now come from the newer chart.

**A common question:** I'm an interior designer. Is there a trade discount?

**The workshop's answer:** Not as a formal program. One designer was offered a small discount on a first purchase, and the workshop pointed out that its quotes are already tightly priced; that project was three cushions with two 4 in (10 cm) bolsters.

**A common question:** How big is the box when a long window seat cushion ships?

**The workshop's answer:** Smaller than you would guess. A 111.5 x 34 in (283 x 86 cm) cushion arrived compressed in a white package of about 24 x 20 x 8 in (60 x 50 x 20 cm).

## On the cutting table: the library window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat cushion, rectangle, wall to wall between bookcases |
| Fabric | Corduroy in denim blue with a steel-blue cast |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Profile | Slim against a tall paneled base |
| Base | Terracotta tongue-and-groove, painted to match shelves and sill |
| Lighting | Two brass swing-arm wall lamps |
| Color source | The kilim rug: rust and blue |
| Best for | Built-in reading nooks and library window seats |

> Write a bolster order as diameter and length, both labeled. A roll 7 in across and 20 in long is a very different pillow from one 20 in across.
>
> — Rosa

> **Tailor's margin:** Tall paneled base, slim window seat cushion. Let the carpentry show, and the seat will look built in rather than dropped in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a tall paneled window seat get a thick or a thin cushion?

Usually thin. A slim cushion near the standard 4 in (10 cm) keeps the paneled base in view and stops the seat climbing toward the sill. Go to 6 or 8 in only if the base is plain or low and you want the softness of a daybed.

### Is corduroy a good fabric for a library window seat?

It suits one well: soft ribs, a matte face in gray daylight and a warm, bookish feel. The ribs run one way, so ask for the wale to run the same direction across the whole seat. The corduroy range is a cotton-polyester blend, not pure cotton.

### What should I send to order armrest bolsters for a window seat?

The diameter and the length, each with its label, plus the fabric and piping you want. One buyer's '20' was read as 20 in across when they meant 20 in long by 7 in across. Writing both numbers with their words avoids that.
