# A dark floral bench cushion on a white box seat by the fireplace

*A letter from Nate on why a navy print on a white box reads as one clean band, and what a carpenter's last-minute change taught one buyer about foam depth.*

> **The quick answer:** A dark floral bench cushion on a white storage box reads as one strong band of color against pale walls, which makes a plain box look built in. Pull two lighter accents from the print, such as mustard from the leaves and duck-egg blue from the blossoms, and finish the cushion flush with the box edge, framed by self piping.

## A letter about one dark band on a white box

Dear partner at the fireplace,

Here is the photo in numbers, because that is how I read a room. One white box, one cushion, zero overhang. The cushion stops exactly at the box edge, and that zero is why the whole thing looks built in rather than bought. Let it hang over by an inch and it becomes a cushion sitting on a box. Stop it an inch short and the white lid shows like a missing tooth.

Now the color. A navy botanical print on a white box, against pale walls, reads as one dark band across the room, stronger than the mantel shelf. Dark on white is high contrast, so the eye takes the bench in one look.

The print carries three smaller colors: cream blossoms, olive leaves, a little yellow-green. The pillows borrow two of them. The mustard velvet picks up the yellow-green leaves; the duck-egg ruffle repeats the pale blossoms. Two light accents on a deep ground, both measured off the fabric itself.

The pale oak fire surround adds warmth next to the cool navy. The framed photos and ceramic vases on the mantel stay small and light, so the bench keeps the attention. The woven basket with its knit throw closes the right end like a bookend, and the shaggy cream rug softens the floor under all that navy. [Self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) outlines the box edge without adding a new color, so the band keeps clean top and bottom lines.

A dark print on a white base is the cheapest trick I know for making a storage box look like joinery. Exact size or size down is one of the questions buyers ask most, and the questions below answer it. [Measure the bench](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/) first, then draft it in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/). ## Pinned by Nate: five coordinates on the white box

Five pins, from the dark floral band at the center to the basket that closes the bench's right end.

1. **Dark floral band**: On a white box, the navy print reads as one strong band of color against pale walls.
2. **Mustard velvet pillow**: Mustard picks up the yellow-green leaves.
3. **Duck-egg ruffle**: Pale blue repeats the lighter blossoms and softens the dark ground.
4. **Oak fire surround**: Pale oak brings warmth next to the cool navy.
5. **Basket and throw**: A textured basket at the end frames the bench.

## Parts list: six colors on one bench

- Navy ground — #1F2A44 — The dark band itself
- Cream blossom — #EDE4CF — Ties the print to the white box
- Olive leaf — #6B7040 — Source of the mustard
- Mustard velvet — #C9A13B — Pulled from the leaves
- Duck-egg — #B7D1CE — Echoes the pale blossoms
- Pale oak — #D4B892 — Warmth beside cool navy

## The back cushion that changed height three times

One buyer wrote in, working with an interior designer, about a long dining bench with a seat and a back cushion. The seat was 98 x 17 3/4 in (249 x 45 cm) on 7 7/8 in (20 cm) of foam. The back changed height three times before settling at 13 in (33 cm), 3 1/8 in (8 cm) thick, its bottom edge shaped to follow the angled back. Angles are just lengths in disguise, and this one kept changing length.

Then the carpenter finished the bench, and the final frame only suited a 4 3/4 in (12 cm) seat. Rather than have the cushions shipped back, the workshop remade them: 98 x 17 3/4 x 4 3/4 in (249 x 45 x 12 cm) for the seat, 98 x 15 3/4 x 2 3/8 in (249 x 40 x 6 cm) for the back, and a dark navy cloth along the way.

That 3 1/8 in (8 cm) change could not be measured before the wood existed. Confirm the finished bench height and back angle with your carpenter before you order foam depth. [Remakes for wrong size or color](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/) explains the process.

## Buyer questions: exact sizes, zippers and wood to wood

**A common question:** Are the cushions made to my exact size, and can you add a notch where the window frame sticks out?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Sizes are made as written, not rounded: 22 x 99 1/2 in (56 x 253 cm) and 22 x 98 1/2 in (56 x 250 cm) were cut exactly. For a frame that sticks out about 3/4 in (2 cm), send a photo; a notch or angled edge is fine with a drawing that shows the measurements.

**A common question:** Can I have tufted bench cushions with zippers so the covers come off for washing?

**The workshop's answer:** Not both at once. Tufted, French-style cushions are made without zippers, so it is either the tufted look with no zipper, or a plain boxed style with a zipper and a removable cover. Linen and linen-cotton are both on the color chart.

**A common question:** Should I order my bench's exact measurement, or size down a little?

**The workshop's answer:** If the cushion sits inside a bench frame, measure the inside from wood to wood and order those exact numbers. Don't use the outside dimensions of the bench; the cushion is made to fit the space inside.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order foam depth after the carpenter finishes, not before. One bench seat went from 7 7/8 in to 4 3/4 in (20 to 12 cm).

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a bench cushion overhang a storage box?

For a built-in look, no. A cushion that finishes flush with the box edge reads as part of the furniture. Overhang makes it look like a separate cushion sitting on top, and a short cushion leaves a strip of lid showing.

### How do I choose pillows for a patterned bench cushion?

Pick pillow colors out of the print itself. On a navy floral, mustard from the leaves and a pale blue from the blossoms add light accents that already belong to the fabric, so the set looks planned rather than collected.

### Does a dark cushion work in a room with pale walls?

Yes, and it often helps. A dark cushion on a white base forms one strong horizontal band that gives a pale room an anchor. Warm wood nearby, such as a pale oak fire surround, keeps a cool navy from feeling cold.
