# A crimson Hemnes daybed cover, read at the corner: codes, swatches and one clear message

*A close look at one piped box corner inside a white Hemnes frame. Hana reads the fit, then the few lines of text that got it there.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a Hemnes daybed cover right the first time, send the fabric code, the piping code, the inside frame size and one note on how the cushions stack. For two stacked mattresses, order one cover for their combined height, such as 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in (80 x 201 x 24 cm). State bolster length against the back cushions, not the frame.

## Pinned by Hana: one corner, five facts

Five pins on a single corner, from the cream cord to the beadboard behind it.

1. **Piped box corner**: The cream cord turns the corner in one smooth curve with no bunching, the sign of a well-cut box top.
2. **Flecked crimson weave**: Red and dark threads mix in the weave, which hides everyday marks better than a flat solid.
3. **Unpiped side wall**: Piping only on the top seam keeps the side wall plain and lets the texture do the work.
4. **Beadboard back panel**: The cushion runs right up to the Hemnes back panel so no gap opens behind it.
5. **White frame rail**: The painted rail and the cream piping are close in tone, so edge and frame read together.

## What a single corner says about the fit

Most photographs show a daybed from across the room. This one kneels at the foot and looks at one corner. That is where a cover tells the truth.

The cream cord turns the corner in a single smooth curve. No pleat. No bunching. That happens only when the top panel is cut to the real size of the box.

The piping runs along the top seam and nowhere else. The side wall stays plain, so the flecked crimson weave carries the eye down to the white rail. Red and darker threads sit together in that weave. It forgives daily marks better than a flat solid would.

The cream cord and the painted frame are close in tone. Edge and frame read as one line. The cushion runs straight up to the beadboard back panel, with no gap behind it.

The cloth is a [linen-look fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), code L52. For a [Hemnes daybed cover](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/ikea-hemnes-daybed-covers/) that is sat on by day and slept on some nights in a [bedroom](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/), that is a practical choice.

A fit like this starts with one number. Measure the inside of the frame, not the old mattress.

## The message that gets it right: six lines to send

- ✓ The fabric code, exactly as the chart prints it. This corner is L52.
- ✓ The piping: a second code for contrast, the same code for self piping, or 'no piping'. Corduroy covers come without it.
- ✓ The inside frame size, rail to rail, plus the height of the mattress stack.
- ✓ One cover for two stacked mattresses, sized to their combined height.
- ✓ Bolster length measured against the back cushions: in front of them, or reaching the back panel.
- ✓ A request for the heavier fabric chart if you want a thicker, sofa-type cloth. The shop has one.

## Thirty-three inches of bolster, where twenty-nine was meant

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a Hemnes daybed set. They wanted a thicker, sofa-type fabric, so the shop sent an additional chart of heavier cloths. They chose a linen.

At checkout, a discount code canceled out the standing sale price. The shop refunded the code's value after the order instead. Before cutting, it also noted that the mattress covers would be a tight fit.

The set arrived. The color was right. The sewing was right. The round bolsters were 33 in (84 cm) long, made to reach the back panel of the daybed. The buyer had pictured about 29 in (74 cm), sitting in front of the back cushions.

Both numbers were reasonable. Only one was written down.

Measure a bolster from the front edge of the seat to the face of the back cushions, and say which length you mean. The [bolster sizing guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/) and the [Hemnes measuring guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/ikea-hemnes-daybed-cover-measuring/) cover both numbers.

One code.
One frame size.
One sentence about the bolsters.

## Buyer questions: area, stacks and piping

**A common question:** Would two smaller daybed cushions cost less than one large one?

**The workshop's answer:** Price follows the surface area. In one quote, a single 74 x 36 x 6 in (188 x 91 x 15 cm) velvet cushion was compared with two 36 1/2 x 36 1/2 x 6 in (93 x 93 x 15 cm) cushions of almost the same total area, and the pair came in lower.

**A common question:** My Hemnes daybed has two mattresses stacked on each other. How do I order covers that fit?

**The workshop's answer:** Measure both mattresses together and order one cover for the total thickness. When one buyer's stack was made as two separate covers, they were too tight; the fix was a single cover at 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in (80 x 201 x 24 cm).

**A common question:** What does 'with or without piping' mean, and does the corduroy cover come piped?

**The workshop's answer:** Piping is the cord sewn into the seams. Corduroy covers are made without it, because the ribs already draw lines, and they are sewn to look exactly like the product photos. Velvet and other fabrics can have piping in the same color or a contrasting one.

## On the cutting table: the crimson Hemnes set

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | IKEA Hemnes daybed mattress cover, with back cushions and round bolsters |
| Fabric | Flecked crimson linen-look weave, code L52 |
| Piping | Cream contrast cord, top seam only |
| Edge | Box edge with squared corners |
| Fit | Snug inside the frame, up to the beadboard back panel |
| Stacked mattresses | One cover for the combined height, e.g. 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in (80 x 201 x 24 cm) |
| Bolsters (one real order) | About 29 in (74 cm) sits in front of the backs; 33 in (84 cm) reaches the back panel |
| Best for | Bedrooms, guest rooms, daybeds used as a sofa |

> On a daybed, write bolster length against the back cushions: 33 in reaches the back panel, about 29 in sits in front of the backs.

> — Hana

> **Tailor's margin:** Two stacked Hemnes mattresses take one cover sized to their combined height; two separate covers came out too tight.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should I measure the Hemnes frame or the old mattress for a new cover?

Measure the inside of the frame. Old mattresses sag and spread, so their size drifts over the years. The frame is fixed, and a cover cut to it fills the daybed snugly up to the back panel, like the crimson corner in this Reading.

### Why is the piping only on the top seam of this daybed cover?

A single top welt outlines the seat without boxing in the side wall. The plain side lets the flecked crimson weave show, and the cream cord sits close in tone to the white Hemnes rail, so edge and frame read together.

### Can I see a heavier fabric before ordering a daybed set?

Yes. Ask for the chart of thicker, sofa-type fabrics, which the shop shares on request, and choose by code. For color, a close-up photo of the roll taken in daylight is more reliable than a phone or laptop screen.

### What does a flecked weave do on a daybed that gets daily use?

It hides everyday marks. Mixed red and darker threads break up the surface, so lint, crumbs and small spots sink into the texture, where a flat solid crimson would show each one under a bedroom lamp.
