# A cream velvet window seat cushion with fuchsia piping, taken apart seam by seam

*Rosa reads a pale velvet seat in a blush bedroom alcove from the top panel down to the base, and shows where the finishing work shows.*

> **The quick answer:** A velvet window seat cushion is built in layers: a top panel, a piped seam, a boxed side band, a zipper, a foam core and a base, and the finishing shows most at the piping. Here a fuchsia cord on cream velvet repeats a magenta print, and the cushion stays about a hand's depth so the sill remains in view.

![Cream velvet box cushion with fuchsia piping on a white paneled window seat between blush pink curtains](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/cream-velvet-window-seat-fuchsia-piping-blush-alcove-1600.webp "A cream velvet seat edged in fuchsia piping picks up the pink curtains, rug and magenta print, so the whole alcove reads as one planned scheme.")

## The alcove first, then the seam that ties it together

Pull up a chair, neighbor, because this one rewards a slow look.

A white paneled window-seat box sits in an alcove between blush pinch-pleat curtains, a sash window opening onto a garden. On top, a cream velvet [box cushion](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#box-cushion), roughly a hand's depth: thick enough to look upholstered, low enough that the sill stays in view.

Then the line that ties the room together: [contrast piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#contrast-piping) in fuchsia. It gives a pale seat a sharp edge, and it was not picked from a card. Look up at the gilt-framed abstract on the wall. The magenta in that print is where the piping color came from. The same pink, softened, runs through the curtains and the pale rug, so seat, art and floor read as one planned scheme.

Brass does the rescuing. The candle sconce and the gilt frame warm the pinks so the room never turns sugary. The limed pale floorboards keep it airy.

Now the craft, the part my grandmother would have checked with her thumb. A contrast cord shows every wobble. On a cream seat, a fuchsia line that drifts even a little at a corner is the first thing you see from the door. So the piping has to run straight along the front, turn each corner cleanly and sit at one height all the way around. That is finishing work, and it is why contrast piping asks more of a workroom than self piping does.

To copy it, choose a pale body in [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) and take the piping color from the strongest note in your artwork, then read the [piping pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/). What is the boldest color hanging on your walls?

## From top panel to base: the cushion in cross-section

1. Top panel: cream velvet, code 105, cut so the pile runs one way across the whole seat
2. Top seam: fuchsia piping, code 119, a cord wrapped in velvet and sewn into the edge
3. Side band: the boxed gusset that gives the cushion its height and square corners
4. Zipper: best along the back band, against the wall, where it stays out of sight
5. Core: foam cut to fill the box so the corners stand up
6. Base: the underside that rests on the painted seat box

## Pinned by Rosa

Start at the fuchsia piping on the front edge, then follow the pins to the cream seat, the brass sconce, the magenta print and the blush rug below.

1. **Fuchsia contrast piping**: The piping repeats the magenta in the print and gives the pale seat a sharp edge.
2. **Cream velvet seat**: A pale velvet body keeps the alcove light next to the window.
3. **Brass candle sconce**: Brass warms the pinks so the scheme doesn't turn sugary.
4. **Magenta abstract print**: The artwork is where the piping color was taken from.
5. **Blush pink rug**: The rug repeats the curtain color at floor level and grounds the seat.

## The cushion from the reviews that wasn't velvet at all

A buyer planning a bay cushion wrote to the workshop after spotting one in the shop's reviews. They wanted to know its color, and asked for swatch photos of five velvet body-and-piping pairs, among them terracotta 113 with olive 123 piping and teal 129 with mushroom taupe 108.

The cushion in the review turned out not to be velvet. It was G-42, a leather-textured fabric chosen by an owner with a large dog. The shop explained that, and since this buyer had no pets, steered them to the Soft or Velvet collections instead. Then it sent side-by-side photos of the pairs and pointed to the samples listing for exact color checks.

I have watched that mix-up happen more than once. A fabric that looks wonderful in a pet owner's photo may be there because it suits a household with claws, not because it is the softest thing to sit on. Ask what it is before you fall for it. If you do share the seat with a big dog, start with the [pet-friendly cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: thickness, size and splitting a bench

**A common question:** Four inches won't be thick enough for us. Can you go to 6, 7.5 or even 8 inches?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, thicker upholstered cushions such as 7.5 or 8 in (19 or 20 cm) can be made, with an extra charge for the added thickness. Send the length and width for a quote. One buyer who had ordered 4 in and needed 6 in paid a small upgrade fee through a balance link.

**A common question:** How is a large custom velvet or corduroy window seat cushion priced?

**The workshop's answer:** Each one is quoted by size and thickness. Past quotes covered a 26 x 65.5 in (66 x 166 cm) cushion 9 in (23 cm) thick, velvet bench mattresses of 27 x 55 in (69 x 140 cm) and a longer 27 x 62 in (69 x 158 cm) that cost more, and two corduroy cushions on 3 in foam.

**A common question:** Our L-shaped kitchen bench has 45-degree front corners. Should it be one cushion or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Send photos and a sketch with every measurement, and the shop will advise. One such bench, with ten measurements lettered A to J, including runs of 100.4 in (255 cm) and 75.6 in (192 cm) and 5.3 in (13.5 cm) angled corners, was made as two cushions. The shop has made many of these.

> **Tailor's margin:** Take the piping color from the strongest note in your artwork. Here a fuchsia cord on cream velvet repeats the magenta in a framed print.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does contrast piping demand more care in the sewing than self piping?

It shows more. A matching cord hides small wobbles; a fuchsia cord on cream velvet shows every one. That is why finishing matters most on contrast piping: straight along the front, clean at the corners and level all the way around.

### How do I pick a piping color for a pale velvet cushion?

Take it from the strongest color already in the room. Here the fuchsia comes from the magenta in a framed print, and the blush curtains and rug repeat it more softly. The piping then joins the art, the seat and the floor into one scheme.

### Where does the zipper belong on a window seat cushion?

Along the back band, against the wall or the window, where it stays out of sight and away from legs. If your seat is open on more than one side, mention it in your order notes so the zipper lands on the side nobody faces.
