# A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover set, laid out piece by piece

*Before anything goes on the frame, the set lies on the rug. Four filled shapes and one empty cover. Each edge tells you something.*

> **The quick answer:** A Hemnes daybed cover set is a fitted box-edge cover for your own mattress, plus filled back pillows and bolsters; no mattress is included. Give your mattress length, width and thickness when you order, or the combined height if two are stacked. Piping along the top and bottom edges keeps the box corners square once the mattress is inside.

The mattress stays on the frame; only its cover is sewn to size.")

## One empty cover, four filled shapes

An empty cover lies flat. Start there.

A cream velvet set rests on a chunky oatmeal rug in front of a white Hemnes daybed. The mattress on the frame is bare. In front lies the fitted cover, empty and folded flat. Behind it, two back pillows stand on their own. To the left, two bolsters lie side by side. Morning sun comes through a sheer linen curtain.

The cover is flat because nothing is inside it. It is a cover sewn to size, not a new mattress. Your own mattress goes in.

Cream velvet on a rug of nearly the same tone. The only line that stands out is the burnt-orange piping. So each shape reads clearly: one long box, two upright squares, two cylinders. The low light lifts the velvet's sheen along the top edges, right where the cord runs.

No corner here is rounded or angled. Those belong to a curved chair front or a bay window seat. A daybed mattress is a plain box, so its cover is a box too, and the cord traces its top and bottom edges. That line is what holds the corners square after the mattress slides in, and what keeps the long front edge straight when you sit on it.

The plants on the sill are the only other color, and they are green, so the orange stays alone. The bare mattress behind is not a styling slip. It is the thing you measure. The Pattern on [measuring a Hemnes cover](https://cushionguide.com/guides/ikea-hemnes-daybed-cover-measuring/) shows where the tape goes.

Is your mattress one layer, or two?

More sets live among the [Hemnes daybed covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/ikea-hemnes-daybed-covers/), and the cloth belongs to the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) family.

## Pinned by Hana

Five pins, from the empty cover on the rug to the bare mattress behind it.

1. **Empty fitted cover**: Without a mattress inside it lies flat: the set is a fitted cover only, and your own mattress goes in it.
2. **Piped box edges**: The cord runs along the top and bottom edges, which keeps the box corners square once the mattress is in.
3. **Pair of filled bolsters**: The two bolsters arrive filled and ready to set against the arms.
4. **Standing back pillows**: Filled back pillows that stand up on their own show even, firm stuffing.
5. **Bare mattress to measure**: Measure this mattress for length, width and height; if two are stacked, give the combined height.

## Box, round, upright: the edges in the set

A daybed set uses two edges, the box and the round. The Pattern on [box edge vs knife edge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/) goes further.

| Piece | Shape and edge | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted mattress cover | Box edge, piped along top and bottom | Mattress length, width and height; combined height if two are stacked |
| Back pillows | Filled squares that stand upright | Even, firm stuffing lets them stand without leaning |
| Bolsters | Round and filled, one for each arm | They arrive filled, ready to set against the arms |
| Knife edge (not used here) | Two panels meet at one seam and taper | Fine for throw pillows; a mattress needs the box edge to keep square corners |

## A beige that read too dark

A buyer in the US ordered a corduroy Hemnes kit made to the exact daybed and mattress size. At checkout they chose Beige. In messages, though, they sent a photo of a lighter cream. The set arrived and looked too dark for the room.

The workshop held that the fabric sent was the one selected. It still agreed to share the cost of a second full set in a soft cream. This time the buyer approved a production photo before it shipped. A backrest that arrived damaged was replaced too.

Two lessons. Select the exact color code at checkout, not only in a message. And when you match a room, hold a swatch first. See [fabric swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/).

A color in a message.
A color at checkout.
Only one of them gets sewn.

## Buyer questions: parts, fit and a cover too small

**A common question:** Can I order just the back pillows and the arm bolsters, without the mattress cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Backrest pillows, armrest pillows or both can be ordered without the mattress cover. The separate options came off the listing because most people buy the full set, but the workshop still quotes them on request.

**A common question:** The cover I got is too small for my mattress. Can it be exchanged?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop makes a replacement cover. First it asks for photos of the tape measure on the length, width and depth, so the mistake isn't repeated. It warns that going oversized can make a cover look loose, then follows your final measurements, for example 76 x 40 x 9.75 in (193 x 102 x 25 cm).

**A common question:** Will this cover fit an IKEA Hemnes daybed?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, it is designed for the Hemnes daybed. Daybed mattresses vary, so give your mattress length, width and thickness when you order.

> **Tailor's margin:** If two mattresses are stacked on a daybed, give the combined height and say whether one cover wraps the whole stack.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a daybed mattress cover need a box edge?

A mattress has flat sides and square corners. A box edge adds a side panel so the cover follows them, and piping at the top and bottom seams holds the corners crisp. A knife edge would pull the sides into a taper.

### Does a Hemnes cover set include a mattress?

No. The set is a fitted cover sewn to your mattress size, plus filled back pillows and bolsters. Your existing mattress goes inside the cover, which is why its three measurements matter.

### Can the piping be a different color from the velvet?

Yes. This set pairs cream velvet with a burnt-orange cord. On a pale rug and a white frame, a contrast cord becomes the one line that outlines every shape, so the box, squares and cylinders all read clearly.
