# Three Striped Outdoor Bench Cushions, Read from Ten Feet and Ten Inches

*Callum takes the questions first, then reads a stack of three striped patio cushions twice: once from across the yard, once with his nose on the weave.*

> **The quick answer:** Outdoor bench cushions in different stripe colors read as one set when they share the same cream ground and stripe spacing and only the stripe color changes. From ten feet the stripes carry the look; up close, self piping cut from the ground color lets each stripe run over the boxing without a break. Alternate two or three colorways along a long bench.

## Questions off the patio, answered first

**A common question:** Why do outdoor cushions cost more? Are all the fabrics priced the same?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The outdoor fabrics are premium: water-repellent and highly resistant to sun and UV. Cheaper fabrics exist but aren't suitable outdoors. If the area is fully covered, the workshop can re-quote in an indoor fabric.

**A common question:** The box on my doorstep looks far too small for my order. Is something missing?

**The workshop's answer:** Cushions are vacuum-sealed, so the parcel looks small, and they expand to full size once opened. Accept the delivery, open everything, and if anything is still missing, message the workshop with a photo of the parcel and its label.

**A common question:** Can you quote a mixed set of seat pads, bench pads, lounger pads and cushions, and what would covers alone cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For 17 pieces, four 18 x 18 x 2 3/8 in (46 x 46 x 6 cm) seat pads, three 21 5/8 x 18 1/2 x 2 3/8 in (55 x 47 x 6 cm) bench pads, two lounger pads at 75 5/8 x 23 5/8 x 2 in (192 x 60 x 5 cm) and 74 3/4 x 19 3/4 x 2 in (190 x 50 x 5 cm), and eight 19 1/4 x 16 7/8 in (49 x 43 cm) cushions, the workshop offered a bundle price below the piece-by-piece total, a lower covers-only price, and shipping included in that quote.

## Piping, 'tube' and two backrests with no stuffing

A buyer got in touch wanting cushions for a patio sofa: two seat cushions at 39 3/8 x 27 1/2 x 6 in (100 x 70 x 15 cm) with piping, and two wedge backrests at 39 3/8 x 15 3/4 in (100 x 40 cm), thinner at the top and without piping, all in an outdoor fabric.

Two things went sideways. The buyer's own word for piping was first read as 'tube', and the backrests were priced without filling. Once both were cleared up, the price was adjusted slightly and paid through a payment link. The cushions took 3 to 5 business days to make and another 3 to 5 days to ship.

Nothing was wrong with the cushions. The words were the weak seam. Say it plainly on the order, friend: which pieces get piping, which get filling, which get neither.

## From across the yard: what 10 feet shows

From ten feet away, nobody sees your piping. They see stripes.

This stack of three outdoor box cushions shows why that matters. All three share the same cream ground and the same stripe spacing. Only the stripe color changes: mustard and slate gray on top, a quieter taupe in the middle, navy and powder blue at the base. From across the patio the pile reads as a family, not a jumble.

The order of the stack does work too. The warmest colorway sits on top, so the eye starts there. The taupe keeps the two stronger stripes from arguing. The darkest stripes anchor the bottom, the way ballast rides low in a hull. Under it all, terracotta brick makes the cream glow, flatters the mustard band and deepens the navy.

For a long bench, order separate pads in two or three sister colorways and alternate them. The [outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/) pages and our Pattern on [one long cushion or two](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) will help you split the length.

## Nose on the weave: what ten inches shows

Now get close. The stripes are woven, not printed, and the piping is self piping cut from the cream ground. It melts into the background and simply traces the rounded box corners, so the vertical stripes carry across the boxing without a line cutting through them. A contrast cord would draw a second stripe across every stripe.

Check one more thing at ten inches: that the stripe on the top panel meets the stripe on the side band. Our [stripe direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) Pattern covers how to ask for it.

Then think about weather, because rain doesn't negotiate. Stripes like these belong in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) for a reason, and [water-repellent versus waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) is worth reading before you pick. More sitting spots are gathered under [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/). How far is your bench from the back door?

## Five pins down the stack

Five pins down the stack, from the mustard stripe on top to the terracotta brick underneath.

1. **Mustard and gray stripe**: The top cushion carries the warmest colorway, so the eye starts at the top of the stack.
2. **Taupe stripe**: The quieter middle colorway keeps the two stronger stripes from clashing.
3. **Navy and blue stripe**: The darkest stripes sit at the base and visually anchor the pile.
4. **Self piping**: Cream piping melts into the ground color and simply traces the rounded box corners.
5. **Terracotta brick**: Warm brick paving makes the cream woven fabric glow.

> **Tailor's margin:** Write it plainly on the order: which pieces get piping, which get filling. Translated words go astray faster than a cushion in a squall.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can different striped cushions share one outdoor bench?

Yes, if they share a ground color and stripe spacing. Change only the stripe color between pads, then alternate two or three colorways along the bench so the pattern repeats in a steady rhythm.

### Should piping on striped outdoor cushions match the ground or contrast?

Piping cut from the ground color stays quiet and lets the stripes run over the boxing without interruption. A contrast cord adds a second line across every stripe, which busies the edge when seen up close.

### What is a wedge backrest cushion?

A back cushion made thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top, so it leans comfortably against a frame. On one patio sofa order, two wedge backs were made 39 3/8 x 15 3/4 in (100 x 40 cm) without piping.
