# Three woven bench cushions, read from ten feet and from ten inches

*Cream, dusty rose and deep teal, stacked on one oak bench in window light. Each shade tells a different story depending on where you stand.*

> **The quick answer:** To choose a bench cushion color, stack two or three options on your own bench in daylight and look from across the room, then up close. From 10 ft (3 m) the deep teal anchors and the cream melts into the wall; from 10 in (25 cm) the cream shows the nubby weave best. Pick the color that works at both distances.

## Pinned by Élodie: three shades on one bench

Five pins mark the cream, dusty rose and deep teal cushions, the oak bench beneath them and the olive sprig beside them.

1. **Cream cushion**: The lightest shade shows the nubby weave best in window light.
2. **Dusty rose cushion**: The mid shade links to the pink tones in the rug.
3. **Deep teal cushion**: The darkest colorway anchors the stack visually.
4. **Oak bench**: Neutral oak favors none of the three colors.
5. **Olive sprig vase**: A small green note to judge the colors against.

## The ten-foot view and the ten-inch view

| Colorway | From 10 ft (3 m) | From 10 in (25 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Cream | Melts into the cream paneling; the bench reads light and open | Shows the nubby weave best where window light skims it |
| Dusty rose | Links to the faded pink in the rug, so the room feels planned | The soft loops of the weave and the self welt come forward |
| Deep teal | Anchors the stack and gives the bench a clear outline | Hides texture; you see color more than weave |

## What a stack of three can teach

My friends, this is the most useful photograph a buyer can take before ordering, and it costs nothing but an afternoon.

Three box cushions in the same textured [performance weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) are stacked on a solid oak bench, each with self piping. The oak is a fair judge: honey-neutral, it favors none of the three. The paneling is cream, the curtain is sheer linen, and the only other color is an olive sprig in a stoneware bud vase, a small green note to test each shade against.

Detail that reads from afar is shape and value: a dark cushion against a pale wall, a straight welt against a soft weave. Detail that reads up close is texture. A good [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) choice satisfies both distances.

Let one color speak and the others listen. If the rug already carries pink, the rose may be the quiet answer; if the room needs a line, the teal draws it. Order swatches in two or three shades, as our Pattern on [swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) suggests, and stack them on your own bench. Which one do you still see from the doorway?

## A closet nook drawn to the inch

A buyer messaged the workshop about a floor cushion for a closet nook, square at one end and cut to a sharp angle at the other. They gave a long side of about 79 in (201 cm), a short side of 59 in (150 cm) and a depth of 24 in (61 cm).

Three numbers were not enough. The workshop asked for a drawing seen from above with every side measured, because an angled end hides a length no one thinks to write down. Once the sketch arrived, the quote followed.

It is the same lesson as the stacked cushions, seen from ten inches: the detail decides. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) helps you check the angled side before you send your drawing.

## Buyer questions: striped welts, backs only, a backup code

**A common question:** Can the piping be a solid color that matches my striped fabric, without the stripes?

**The workshop's answer:** Not always. For one striped taupe fabric no stripe-free matching piping was possible, so the workshop sent a photo of piping cut from the striped fabric itself, and the buyer could choose that or no piping. If you leave the piping choice blank, the workshop asks before production.

**A common question:** Can I order only the backrest cushions for my banquette? I need seven of them.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, backrest-only orders are fine. Seven plain back pillows were made in charcoal gray linen with matching piping: three at 21 x 14 in (53 x 36 cm), three at 26 x 14 in (66 x 36 cm) and one at 27 x 14 in (69 x 36 cm), all 3 in (7.5 cm) thick.

**A common question:** If my first fabric choice is out of stock, can you use a backup color instead?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Put a backup fabric code in your order note, for example a taupe velvet, and the workshop uses it if your first choice isn't available.

## On the cutting table: the stacked trio

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Box bench cushions, rectangle, stacked to compare |
| Fabric | Textured performance weave in three colorways |
| Colorways | Cream, dusty rose, deep teal |
| Piping | Self piping on each cushion |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Bench | Solid oak against cream tongue-and-groove paneling |
| Light | Soft window daylight through a sheer linen curtain |
| Best for | Comparing colors on your own bench before ordering |

> Stack two or three bench cushion colors on your own bench and step back 10 ft (3 m); the shade you still notice from the doorway is the one to order.

> **Tailor's margin:** From across a room, value beats texture. Choose how light or dark the cushion should be first, then its weave.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What should sit beside cushion color samples when you compare them on a bench?

One small natural reference, like the olive sprig here, and nothing else colorful. A green leaf gives your eye a fixed point to measure each shade against, while extra pillows or throws would pull the comparison off course.

### Does a textured cushion weave still show from across the room?

Mostly not. Up close you see the loops and slubs; from 10 ft (3 m) most texture fades and you mainly see how light or dark the cushion is. Choose the shade for the distance and the weave for the touch.

### Can a performance weave come in soft shades like dusty rose and cream?

Yes. The same textured performance weave is shown here in cream, dusty rose and deep teal, each made into a self-piped box cushion. Ask for swatches of the shades you like and compare them side by side in daylight.
