# Cream leaf jacquard seat and back cushions on a cane loveseat by the back door

*A letter from Callum on a gray morning: box cushions that stand up without straps, a pale pattern that forgives, and a back door close enough to carry them in when the weather turns.*

> **The quick answer:** Outdoor cushions for a cane loveseat should fill the seat from arm to arm and have box-edged back cushions cut to stand upright against the woven back, so the sofa reads as fully upholstered. A tonal cream pattern lets the cane stay the star. Send a photo of the frame before adding straps; firm, piped edges often hold without them.

## A letter from the back step: cream patio cushions

Friend,

The sky in this photograph is the color of a wet sail, and the cushions are cream. Most people would call that brave. I call it planning, because the back door is right there.

Here's what I see. A honey cane two-seater on a paved patio, against a weathered timber fence. The seat cushion fills the frame from arm to arm, full depth, so the sofa reads as upholstered rather than dressed. Two back cushions stand upright against the woven back without slumping. That's the edge doing its job. A box edge with self piping holds a straight line, where a soft knife-edge pillow would fold in the middle by lunch.

The fabric is a tonal cream leaf [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/). The pattern adds texture and forgives the odd mark, but it's cream on cream, so the cane weave stays the star. The only strong color in the frame comes from red geraniums in terracotta pots.

The small things tell you how the place gets used. A patterned mug and a pair of reading glasses on a little wooden side table: somebody's early coffee. A coir mat by the white vinyl back door.

That door matters more than it looks. A cream jacquard on an open patio goes inside when the clouds thicken. Rain doesn't negotiate. If your cushions can't come in, pick from the water-repellent outdoor chart instead; the difference is laid out in [water-repellent versus waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/).

How many steps is your patio seat from a dry roof?

## Five pins on a cane loveseat

Five pins, from the full-depth seat to the red geraniums, showing how shape and a pale pattern make a cane sofa look finished.

1. **Full-depth seat cushion**: The seat fills the cane frame from arm to arm so the sofa reads as fully upholstered.
2. **Upright back cushion**: Each back cushion is cut to stand against the woven back without slumping.
3. **Honey cane arm**: A tonal cream pattern adds texture but lets the cane weave stay the star.
4. **Red geraniums**: Potted geraniums supply the only strong color in the frame.
5. **Mug and glasses**: A mug and reading glasses on the side table hint at a quiet morning outside.

## Before you pay for straps, check these

- ✓ Send a photo of the furniture first. The frame may already hold the cushion for you.
- ✓ Give back cushions a box edge so they stand upright against a woven back.
- ✓ Ask whether double piping will do the job; it held the backs in place in the story below.
- ✓ Fill the seat from arm to arm so nothing can slide sideways.
- ✓ If you sent the wrong size, changes go through as long as the fabric hasn't been cut.

## Thirteen cushions, and the straps nobody needed

A buyer in the US wanted cushions for a set of patio chairs with sleeve-style backs: seven back cushions at 15 x 25 in (38 x 64 cm) and six seat cushions at 25 x 25 x 5 in (64 x 64 x 13 cm), all with straps and piping. Backs and piping in HM-07, seats in HM-08.

The workshop asked to see the chairs first. Once it had the photos, it suggested double-piped back cushions that would hold their place without straps, and quoted the thirteen pieces both ways, with straps costing more.

Structure did the job the straps were meant to do. That's the whole lesson: send a photo of the furniture before you add hardware. ## Buyer questions: water-repellent outdoor charts, split beds and second thoughts

**A common question:** Do you make waterproof cushions for outdoors?

**The workshop's answer:** Not waterproof, but water-repellent: there is a separate water-repellent outdoor fabric chart to choose colors from. On a patio project you can order one cushion first to test the fit; one test cushion took 5 days to make and 3 to 4 days to deliver.

**A common question:** My van bench pulls out into a bed. Will two cushions side by side feel strange to sleep on?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop said splitting the base into two cushions over the storage compartments won't look or feel weird; it comes down to preference. Pieces of 14 x 70 in (36 x 178 cm) and 24 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm) can be made for a slide-out bed.

**A common question:** I sent the wrong measurements. Can I still change them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as long as the fabric hasn't been cut. One outdoor order went from 45 x 39 in to 52 x 28 in with no price difference.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a big patio job, order one test cushion first to check the fit on the real frame before the rest are cut.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do cane sofa back cushions need ties to stay upright?

Not always. Back cushions cut to stand against the woven back, with a firm box edge, often stay put on their own. A photo of the frame lets the workshop judge that before you add straps.

### What fabric pattern suits a honey cane loveseat?

A pale tonal pattern. Cream-on-cream leaf jacquard adds texture and forgives small marks without competing with the cane weave. Let potted plants, like the red geraniums here, carry the strong color.

### Should a cane loveseat seat cushion fill the frame from arm to arm?

Yes. A seat that fills the frame arm to arm, at full depth, leaves no gap to slide into and makes the sofa read as fully upholstered rather than dressed with a loose pad.

### Can an indoor-style fabric live on a patio?

On a sheltered patio by the door, yes, if the cushions come in before rain. For open, exposed spots, choose from the separate water-repellent outdoor chart instead.
