# Notes on a cream corduroy cushion for a window storage chest

*I keep a notebook by the sewing machine for the fabrics people ask me to describe by feel. Corduroy has its own page, and this overhead photo shows why.*

> **The quick answer:** A cream corduroy window seat cushion feels plush and ribbed, and on a storage chest it should stop flush with the lid on every side so the lid lifts without snagging. Run the ribs lengthwise to make a short chest read as a bench. Corduroy is indoor-only, shows where people sit, and its zippered cover washes at 86°F (30°C).

## Page one: what corduroy tells your hand

Run your palm along a corduroy cushion and you feel it before you see it: soft raised ribs with a plush, velvety surface between them. Run it the other way and the nap resists a little. That is the whole character of the cloth.

From above, this photo shows the ribs running the full length of the seat. On a short chest that is a trick worth stealing, because lengthwise ribs stretch the seat into something that reads as a bench. The pastel striped rug below runs the same direction, so the view stays orderly.

The fit is flush with the lid on every side: square self-piped corners and no overhang at the front. On a lift-lid chest, an overhang snags every time someone reaches for a blanket. Self piping outlines the shape without breaking the texture.

Cream reads warm against the terracotta walls in overhead daylight. Cherry blossom branches in a stone vase, the framed prints, a rattan globe pendant and a book left open on the oak pedestal table make the seat look lived in, not staged.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and corduroy shows their favorite spot: the pile marks where people sit most. It is indoor-only, with no UV or water resistance, so keep it out of long hours of direct sun. More on the cloth in [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) and [wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/); more seats in the [window seat cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) and [living room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/living-room-cushions/).

Which end of your window seat gets fought over?

## Pinned by Rosa: the storage chest cushion from above

Five pins: the lengthwise ribs, the self-piped corner, the chest front, the pastel rug and the open book.

1. **Ribs run lengthwise**: From above you can see the wales run the full length, making a short chest look longer.
2. **Self-piped corner**: The corner is square and flush with the chest lid on both sides.
3. **Chest front**: No overhang at the front, so the lid can be lifted without the cushion snagging.
4. **Pastel rug**: The rug's stripes run the same way as the corduroy ribs, which keeps the view orderly.
5. **Side table book**: A book left open makes the seat look lived-in rather than staged.

## Corduroy by hand, in a table

| Question | Corduroy | On a chest seat |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Plush ribs, velvety between them | Warm and textured under the palm |
| Nap | Lighter one way, richer the other | Cut every panel in the same direction |
| Wear | Marks show where people sit most | Expect a softer patch at the favorite end |
| Light | Indoor-only, no UV or water resistance | Keep it out of all-afternoon sun |
| Washing | Zippered cover, 86°F (30°C) max, gentle, air-dry | Inside out, mild detergent, no bleach |
| Piping | Self piping is the guaranteed color match | An outline without a second color |

## The nook that lost a centimeter on purpose

A buyer measured her window nook at 34 1/4 x 28 3/8 in (87 x 72 cm) and changed her order to a cushion of 33 7/8 x 28 in (86 x 71 cm): 3/8 in (1 cm) off each dimension, so the piped edges would slide in snug instead of fighting the walls.

She had measured in centimeters and asked the workshop to work in centimeters too, because every trip to inches and back rounds the numbers a little. She was right, and she left a kind review.

So here's my rule, neighbor: order in the unit your tape measure used. The method is in [how to measure a window seat](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/), and splitting a lid at the hinge is in [storage bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/).

## Buyer questions: back pillows, piping and thickness

**A common question:** What size are your standard back pillows, and what do you need from me to order a set?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard backrest is 15 3/4 in (40 cm) high and about 4 in (10 cm) thick, so the workshop only needs the length of each pillow and how many you want. It then confirms the price.

**A common question:** If I choose solid navy piping for a navy-striped cushion, will the two blues match exactly?

**The workshop's answer:** Not always. Piping cut from a different fabric type can differ slightly in tone, so the workshop picks the closest match from hundreds of fabrics. The guaranteed match is self piping, cut from the cushion fabric itself, and that is what it recommends; a close code from the same fabric type is the other option.

**A common question:** My dining bench is already at seat height. How thick should the cushion be?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop generally recommends 4 in (10 cm), and 3 in (7.5 cm) is the most popular choice. For a bench already 17 in (43 cm) high, the buyer went with 2 in (5 cm) to keep the table height comfortable; the medium-firm 32-density foam doesn't sink much.

## On the cutting table: the storage chest seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Base | White lift-lid storage chest under a window |
| Fit | Flush with the lid on all sides, no front overhang |
| Measure | The lid, not the chest body |
| Fabric | Cream corduroy, ribs running lengthwise |
| Piping | Self piping, square corners |
| Thickness | 3 in (7.5 cm) is most chosen; 4 in (10 cm) for everyday seats |
| Care | Zippered cover, 86°F (30°C) max, air-dry |
| Limits | Indoor-only; shows sitting marks over time |
| Best for | Storage chests, window nooks and reading corners |

> On a lift-lid storage chest, cut the cushion flush with the lid on every side. Any overhang at the front snags when the lid opens.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order in the unit you measured in. One nook at 34 1/4 x 28 3/8 in (87 x 72 cm) got a cushion 3/8 in (1 cm) smaller each way.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a corduroy cushion sit in a sunny window?

With care. Corduroy is indoor-only, with no UV or water resistance, and indoor fabrics can fade in strong, prolonged sun. If the seat gets hard sun for hours each day, add a sheer curtain or choose a different fabric for that window.

### On a short chest seat, should corduroy ribs run lengthwise or across?

Lengthwise, when you want a short seat to look longer. The ribs lead the eye along the seat like pinstripes. Keep every panel cut in the same nap direction so the color reads evenly from end to end.

### Is a lighter and darker look on a corduroy cushion a defect?

No. Corduroy has a nap, so it looks lighter one way and richer the other. That is the pile catching light, not a color mismatch. Panels cut in one direction keep a finished cushion looking even from every side of the room.

### Should I measure the lid or the chest body for a storage chest cushion?

The lid. Lids often overhang the chest body slightly, and a cushion cut to the body looks undersized on top. Measure the lid's length and depth where the cushion will sit, and ask for a flush fit.
