# A cream and brown chenille entryway bench cushion on oak

*An entry bench gets half a minute of sitting at a time, boots in one hand. Every finishing detail on it has to earn its keep.*

> **The quick answer:** A good entryway bench cushion is firm, cut exactly to the bench top with no overhang, and finished with a straight piped edge and the zipper on the back band. Choose a mid-tone weave that hides dry mud, and order a swatch first, because dark stripes and dots can read blue or charcoal depending on the light.

## What a bench by the door asks for

Boots on, boots off, keys found, out. That is the whole job of an [entryway bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/), so this one is firm and fitted exactly to the oak top, with no overhang for a coat hem to catch.

The fabric is a dotted [chenille](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#chenille) in cream, brown and taupe: the colors of dry mud and saddle leather, a sensible call a yard from the doormat. The piping reads as the darkest brown in the weave and draws a firm line against the slatted mission frame. A straight welt is a kind of honesty.

Each prop has a job. The straw hat on the hook sets a country story at eye level. The tall riding boots repeat the deepest brown. A fringed taupe throw softens the far end of a long [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), and wheat and lavender in a stoneware crock add height without clutter.

Copy it by taking your cushion color from your most-worn boots. I learned that the hard way, with a cream cushion in a mudroom one wet spring. So, what color are the boots by your door?

## Pinned by Maggie: five details by the door

Five spots on the photograph, from the hat on its hook down to the boots.

1. **Cream and brown weave**: The color of dry mud and saddle leather, sensible beside boots.
2. **Brown piped edge**: Dark piping sharpens the cushion against the slatted frame.
3. **Fringed wool throw**: A taupe throw over the end softens the long bench.
4. **Straw hat on hook**: Sets the country-entry story at eye level.
5. **Riding boots**: Brown leather boots repeat the darkest tone in the cushion.

## A finishing checklist for any bench cushion

- ✓ The piping runs straight from corner to corner, with no wander along the front.
- ✓ The piping sits on the seam line and never changes the size.
- ✓ Corners are filled out to the tip, not soft and empty.
- ✓ The zipper runs along the back band and faces the wall.
- ✓ The front edge lines up with the bench top: no overhang, no gap.
- ✓ Dots and stripes run square to the front edge.

## The stripe that turned out navy

A buyer in the US ordered a 2 in (5 cm) bench cushion in a striped cotton, 73 x 26 in (185 x 66 cm). A set with 8 in and 6 in bolsters was on the table too, but they chose the cushion alone.

When it arrived, the stripe read dark blue. From the photos they had expected charcoal. The workshop checked and confirmed the correct code had been used, then offered a partial refund, or a return at the buyer's expense.

I have been on both ends of that call, dear. Dark stripes often photograph as charcoal, so when the exact shade matters, order a swatch and look at it by a window.

## Buyer questions: booths, thickness and blue

**A common question:** Can you make seat cushions for a U-shaped booth in a restaurant?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as separate pads, for example two at 24 x 19 in (61 x 48 cm) and one at 14 ft x 19 in (427 x 48 cm). Send every final measurement in inches only or centimeters only, never a mix. That job was quoted at 1 to 2 weeks for making and delivery.

**A common question:** How thick is a 21 x 66.25 in window seat cushion, and is there foam inside?

**The workshop's answer:** That listing is 4 in (10 cm) thick as standard and filled with silicone fiber balls rather than foam. The thickness can be changed to suit your seat.

**A common question:** Do you have olive green or a dusty slate blue in velvet or in the dotted chenille?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The velvet chart includes olive green and dusty slate blue shades. In the dotted chenille, P-66 has a blue-toned background and P-67 is a solid blue, and close-up photos of any code are available.

> On a bench cushion, the piping should run dead straight from corner to corner. Any wobble along the front edge shows from across the room.

> **Tailor's margin:** If boots come off at the bench, choose a cushion in mid browns and taupes. A cream entryway cushion shows every scuff within a month.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Entryway bench box cushion, firm |
| Fabric | Dotted chenille in cream, brown and taupe |
| Piping | Self piping, reading as the darkest brown |
| Fit | Exact to the oak top, no overhang |
| Zipper | Back band, facing the wall |
| Swatch | Order one when the exact shade matters |
| Best for | Mudroom and entryway benches beside boots |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should an entryway bench cushion hang over the edge of the bench?

No. Cut it to the bench top exactly. By the door, an overhang catches coat hems and bags, and the front edge wears first. A flush fit also leaves a good wooden frame on show.

### Is chenille practical on a mudroom bench?

Yes, if you choose the color well. A dotted chenille in mixed browns and taupes hides dry mud and scuffs far better than a flat cream, and a zippered cover comes off when it needs a wash.

### What does piping actually do on a box cushion?

A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size, and it gives the edge a firm outline that keeps a bench cushion looking tailored.
