# A cream bouclé custom bench cushion, and the patio habits it borrows

*Outdoor cushions teach discipline: tie them down, split them where things move, draw every piece. Indoor cushions teach comfort. This cream bouclé bench takes a little from each.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion indoors can borrow three outdoor habits: split it wherever a lid lifts, add ties where it might slide, and draw every piece before anything is cut. The fabric rule runs the other way: bouclé, velvet and linen-look belong indoors or under a deep roof, never on an open patio. On a cream bench, let texture carry the interest.

## Five pins on a cream-on-cream bench

Five pins on a bench painted to match its cushion, where texture and stoneware do the talking.

1. **Box edge with welt**: A self-colored welt keeps the bouclé edge crisp without adding a line of contrast.
2. **Open book**: The book sits flat, which shows the foam is firm enough to use as a surface.
3. **Stoneware mug**: Gray-brown stoneware echoes the vase and ties the corner together.
4. **Dried eucalyptus**: Dusty sage leaves are the only color in a room built from creams.
5. **Painted bench frame**: The frame is painted the same cream as the cushion so the seat reads as one block.

## Cream on cream, carried by the loops

Everything in this corner is cream, so the [bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) has to earn its keep, and it does. Low side light through the leaded panes picks out every curl. The bench frame is painted the same cream, so seat and cushion read as one block.

The proportion is right too: the cushion is about a third as thick as the frame is tall, generous without turning a bench into a sofa. A self-colored welt keeps the box edge crisp with no line of contrast, which on a loopy cloth is the tidy choice.

Then the props. Dried eucalyptus in a stoneware vase is the only color in the room, a dusty sage. The speckled mug repeats the vase's gray-brown and ties the corner together. The open book lies flat on the seat, which tells you the foam is firm enough to use as a surface, and the dark oak boards keep all that cream from floating. What does your bench frame measure, floor to top?

## What crosses the threshold, and what stays out

| Habit | On outdoor cushions | On this indoor bench |
|---|---|---|
| Ties | Keep pads on windy patio benches | Back corners, so a pad stays put when a lid lifts |
| Splits | Cut at the lid lines of storage benches | One piece per lid, so each opens alone |
| Drawings | Every sectioned piece drawn separately | Bench tops and cushion sizes sketched first |
| Fabric | Outdoor-rated cloth only | Bouclé, velvet or linen-look, under a roof |

## Two flip-up benches, a 2-inch gap and a lavender order

A buyer in the US had a dining nook with two flip-up storage benches that don't meet at the corner, a 2 in (5 cm) gap between them, plus a small corner piece. Corduroy didn't come in lilac, so they chose a lavender soft fabric and sent a diagram of the bench tops with proposed sizes, 15 1/2 in (39 cm) wide.

The workshop's advice read like an outdoor brief: a close fit with no overhang, 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm) thick, three separate pieces so every lid opens ([the hinge-split Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) explains why), ties at the bottom back corners, and plain foam-filled cushions rather than tufted, which also kept the quote lower. The ties were missed in production, so the workshop sent matching fabric and thread and split the shipping. Right, then: I have forgotten a tie or two myself, and owning it fast is the trick.

## Sizes, washing and a stripe that looked gray

**A common question:** Can you check my measurements and decide the final size for me? And is your mockup drawing exact?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop makes the cushion strictly to the numbers you give and can't decide the final size for you. It turns your numbers into a drawing so you can check the shape, but you confirm them. Sketch the final sizes on paper and send a photo.

**A common question:** Is the linen fabric all right for a nursery? Can it go in the washer and on the line?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The linen-look fabric is polyester and can be machine washed and line dried. The workshop doesn't recommend cotton for a nursery, since it copes less well with washing and daily use; velvet is a good alternative.

**A common question:** Is fabric N03 gray, and which piping matches its darker stripe?

**The workshop's answer:** N03 is a cream and beige stripe, not gray. Piping in 108, 110 or 912 suits the darker stripe; the contrast piping in the shop's photo is velvet 108.

> A storage bench cushion should split wherever a lid lifts. Ties at the two back corners keep each piece in place when the seat is opened.

> **Tailor's margin:** Bouclé loops catch claws, rings and hook-and-loop tape. On a busy family bench, keep bouclé for an accent pad and put a flat weave on the seat.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can bouclé cushions go on a covered porch?

Indoor fabrics such as bouclé, velvet or linen-look can live under a deep roof, out of blowing rain and direct sun. An open patio needs outdoor fabric, because indoor cloth there fades, mildews or soaks through first.

### Where should ties go on a lift-up bench cushion?

At the bottom back corners, or on the hinge side, so the pad stays put or rides up with the lid when the seat is opened. Say where you want them in the order note.

### How do I keep an all-cream seat from looking washed out?

Match the cushion to painted wood so the texture carries the look, then add one natural accent a shade darker, like gray-brown stoneware or dried stems.
