# Cranberry velvet chair cushions with ties, ready for a full farmhouse table

*When the whole family comes home, every chair gets pulled out and every cushion gets tested. Harlan reads one pine chair and what it teaches about seating a crowd.*

> **The quick answer:** A chair cushion with ties suits a farmhouse table that seats guests because two pairs of ties, one at the side posts and one at the back posts, keep a thick pad square on smooth pine while people shift, lean and push back. Cranberry velvet with off-white piping adds warmth without looking heavy, and a deep color hides the marks of a long supper.

## Pinned by Harlan: a bow, a back tie, a pale welt and a water bowl

Five pins, from the velvet bow at the side post to the folded napkin at the far end of the table.

1. **Velvet tie bow**: Velvet ties bowed at the side post hold the thick pad square.
2. **Back-post ties**: A second pair at the rear stops the cushion sliding forward on smooth pine.
3. **Off-white piped corner**: Pale piping lifts the deep red so it never looks heavy.
4. **Dog water bowl**: A pet bowl in the background shows a real, working family kitchen.
5. **Folded linen napkin**: Gray linen on scrubbed pine keeps the table simple and country.

## A table is only as good as its last chair

Set a table for twelve and you learn fast which chair cushions were made for company. The good ones stay put when a nephew leans back on two legs. The poor ones end up on the floor by dessert.

This pine chair is ready for company. The pad is thick, cut with a box edge, and tied twice. A pair of velvet ties is bowed at the side posts to hold it square, and a second pair at the back posts stops it sliding forward on smooth, scrubbed pine. When guests shift, lean and push back from the table, a pad tied at both points goes nowhere. [Tie placement for chairs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) shows where they go on other frames.

The cloth is cranberry [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/), and it brings warmth and a little ceremony to plain country wood. Velvet remembers, my friend: every hand that brushes it leaves the pile lying a new way, and on a dining chair that soft, shifting shine is part of the welcome. The off-white piping keeps the deep red from looking heavy and draws a clean outline around the seat.

## What the pine kitchen tells a guest

Look past the chair. The scrubbed pine table has been wiped down more times than anyone could count, and nobody fusses over it. A folded gray linen napkin keeps the setting simple. The sisal rug takes chair legs dragged back and forth all evening without complaint.

Then there is the steel dog bowl on its mat by the wall. I like that bowl more than anything else in the photograph. It tells you this is a working family kitchen, where cushions have to survive real suppers, not a styled corner nobody sits in.

The second slat-back chair in the frame is the hosting lesson. Order pads for every seat at once, guest chairs included, so the color, the welt and the ties match down the length of the table. Browse more pads in [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/), see the [farmhouse chair cushions with ties](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/farmhouse-chair-cushions-with-ties/) sketches, or draft a shape in the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/). How many chairs do you pull up when everyone comes home?

## The rocking chair the workshop turned down

A buyer once wrote asking for a seat pad for a rocking chair with a shaped seat, and offered to send a template. The workshop went through the photos and the drawing with its craftsmen, and then did something shops rarely do. It said no.

Without the chair on the bench in front of them, the risk of a poor fit was too high. The buyer valued the honesty, and later came back for two plain rectangular bench cushions in a sturdy sage fabric, about 15 3/8 x 34 1/4 in (39 x 87 cm) and 12 1/4 x 20 1/8 in (31 x 51 cm).

A seam is only as good as the pattern under it. Shaped seats are best made with the chair on hand; rectangles are safe to order from a distance. Before a dinner-party order, measure every seat on its own, because farmhouse chairs bought one at a time are rarely twins. [Dining chair pad measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dining-chair-pad-measurements/) walks through it, and more gathering spots live under [kitchen nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: café stools, small seats and a tricky olive

**A common question:** Can you make round cushions for the bar stools in a café?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a reference photo with the diameter and thickness. For a new coffee shop the workshop made five 16 in (41 cm) round cushions at 4 in (10 cm) thick, built for heavy café use; 3.5 in (9 cm) was also possible. The workshop makes the cushion and foam only, not metal stool frames.

**A common question:** How is a small seat or chair cushion priced?

**The workshop's answer:** By size and build, so the quote starts with your numbers. Buyers have asked about a 20 x 20 x 5 in (51 x 51 x 13 cm) seat, a 22 x 14 in (56 x 36 cm) pad, a 17 3/8 x 16 1/2 in (44 x 42 cm) chair cushion and four 26 x 26 in (66 x 66 cm) cushions, each in a different color. Adding a backrest raises the quote.

**A common question:** Will an olive green velvet clash with my curtains? Greens are so hard to judge online.

**The workshop's answer:** That olive shifts a lot with light: under white bulbs it reads yellow-lime, and under warm light it turns much calmer. Greens, sage above all, are the hardest colors to judge from a screen, so look at close-ups under your own lighting or order samples first.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order pads for the guest chairs in the same order as the family chairs. Velvet from one batch matches; velvet bought a year later may not.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How many ties does a farmhouse dining chair pad need?

The chair in this photo uses two pairs: one bowed at the side posts to keep the pad square, and one at the back posts to stop it sliding forward on smooth pine. Where a chair has only back posts, a single pair at the back is the usual start.

### Why is the piping off-white on a cranberry velvet chair pad?

Pale piping lifts a deep red so it never looks heavy, and it draws a clean outline around each seat. On scrubbed pine, off-white also sits easily beside the pale wood and a gray linen napkin, which keeps the look country rather than formal.

### Can a pad for a curved rocking-chair seat be made from photos alone?

The workshop has declined that job when the chair couldn't be on hand, because the fit risk on a shaped seat was too high. Rectangular pads and bench cushions are safe to order from measurements; curved seats are best fitted with the chair present.
