# A cranberry velvet lumbar pillow, and the filling that keeps its pile lit

*Low winter sun, a walnut bed and one long cranberry pillow. The glow is partly the dye and partly what sits inside the cover.*

> **The quick answer:** A velvet lumbar pillow looks full and catches light evenly when its insert fills the cover snugly, corner to corner. If the inserts you own are still good, order covers only and give their exact relaxed size: a cover about 1 in too small makes the filling bulge and feel over-firm.

## Seven colors in the late-afternoon sun

- Cranberry velvet — #6B1F24 — The pile lifts a shade where light lands
- Walnut — #5B3A28 — The same warm red, browned
- Ivory — #EEE6D6 — Euro shams, a quiet ground
- Cream linen — #E4D9C6 — The rumpled duvet
- Oatmeal knit — #B9A68C — The chunky throw
- Brass — #B38B47 — Lamplight on metal
- Sunlit plaster — #E8D8BE — Where the low sun lands

## Five pins in the winter glow

Five pins, from the lit top edge of the velvet to the sun on the plaster.

1. **Cranberry velvet lumbar**: Its pile catches the side light as a soft highlight along the top edge.
2. **Cranberry square**: The square is centered exactly above the lumbar for a formal, hotel-like stack.
3. **Brass mushroom lamp**: Lamp glow on brass repeats the warm cast of the velvet.
4. **Chunky knit throw**: A rough oatmeal knit adds a third texture between linen and velvet.
5. **Window light on plaster**: Low sun on the wall sets the warm mood the cranberry depends on.

## What sits inside the velvet, and why you can see it

Look along the top edge of the lumbar. The pile catches the side light in one unbroken highlight, and that only happens when the insert fills the cover to every corner. Velvet shows its filling: each slack fold turns the pile a shade darker, the way a footprint shows in snow.

So the inside matters even on a pillow nobody sits on. An insert a little larger than its cover keeps the front smooth and the corners crisp; polyester fiberfill is light and washable but packs down and wants plumping. The lumbar is nearly as wide as the ivory shams, with the square centered above, a formal, hotel-like stack.

If the filling you own is still good, order covers only and measure the insert itself, relaxed and seam to seam, never the old cover. The [covers-only Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) shows how, and the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) helps when a seat needs new foam. What is inside the pillows on your bed tonight, my friends?

## Six brown velvet covers for inserts that were still good

A buyer ordered velvet samples in brown, dusty mauve and mustard, then chose the brown for six sofa cushions: three at 23 x 24 x 4.5 in (58 x 61 x 11.5 cm) and three at 23 x 20 x 3.5 in (58 x 51 x 9 cm), zippers on the 23 in side. With new foam, the quote came to about twice the budget.

Then the buyer mentioned their existing inserts. The workshop switched to covers only and quoted the six together, much closer to the plan.

## Buyer questions: covers, tears and toppers

**A common question:** I already have the foam. Can you make only the cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose the cover-only option in the nearest size and write your exact foam sizes in the note, such as a back at 22 x 16 x 5 in and a seat at 21.5 x 21.5 x 6 in. Covers cost far less than full cushions.

**A common question:** My cover arrived torn, and an armrest cover came without its piping. Will you replace them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A cover ripped in shipping and an L-shaped armrest cover missing its piping were both replaced with new covers. For a small tear found later, after unpacking, the workshop asked the buyer to share part of the cost.

**A common question:** Do you make pet-friendly sofa toppers in custom sizes, and do they have zippers?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes: a 20 x 65 in quilted topper is ordered on the 20 x 67 in option, and tassels can go on each corner. The dog sofa pad is tufted, with no zipper. Your couch color can be matched from a photo.

> **Tailor's margin:** For covers over inserts you already own, measure the insert relaxed, seam to seam. A cover 1 in too small makes the filling bulge and feel over-firm.

## On the cutting table: the cranberry lumbar

| | |
|---|---|
| Pillow | Lumbar pillow, knife edge, no piping |
| Fabric | Cranberry velvet, short tight pile |
| Partner | Matching cranberry square, centered above |
| Inside | An insert that fills the cover corner to corner |
| Covers only | For inserts you own; give exact relaxed sizes |
| Best for | Winter bedrooms with warm wood |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a lumbar pillow insert be bigger than its cover?

Slightly, for a decorative pillow. An insert a little larger than its cover fills the corners and keeps the front smooth. For a box cushion over foam you already own, give the foam's exact size instead.

### Does velvet show when a pillow is underfilled?

More than flat weaves do. Velvet's pile changes shade with its direction, so every fold or hollow reads as a darker patch. A well-filled pillow keeps the pile lying one way and the top-edge highlight unbroken.

### How do I keep velvet pillow covers looking fresh?

Brush the pile in one direction, steam creases from a distance instead of ironing, and wash zippered covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Pressure marks and shading are normal for velvet, not defects.
