# A cranberry velvet Hemnes daybed cover, and the quiet mistakes this photo avoids

*Hana reads a white IKEA Hemnes daybed dressed in one deep red, and lists the errors it sidesteps: padded measurements, busy piping, heavy wood, too many colors.*

> **The quick answer:** A Hemnes daybed cover fits best when you send the true stacked mattress height and let the maker size it; the fabric stretches slightly, so covers are cut about ⅜ to ¾ in (1 to 2 cm) under the measured thickness. In velvet, choose self piping and one color so the daybed reads as a single upholstered piece.

## Pinned by Hana: five points on a red daybed

Read the pins from the mattress front to the oak table: velvet, bolster, back, jute, wood.

1. **Cranberry velvet mattress**: Velvet shifts shade as you move, so the seat looks lighter at the front and deeper at the back.
2. **Velvet bolster**: Self-piped bolsters keep the velvet pile uninterrupted all the way round.
3. **Velvet back cushion**: Soft-filled backs let the velvet crease slightly, adding to its relaxed look.
4. **Jute rug**: Coarse jute makes the velvet look even softer by contrast.
5. **Oak side table**: A light oak table keeps a strong red from making the corner feel heavy.

## Five mistakes this photo does not make

- ✗ Padding the measurement. The cover is made to the true stacked height, not a guessed extra inch.
- ✗ Contrast piping on velvet. The piping is cut from the same cranberry, so the pile runs unbroken.
- ✗ Three reds instead of one. Mattress, backs and bolsters share a single deep red.
- ✗ Dark wood beside a strong color. A pale oak side table keeps the corner light.
- ✗ A soft rug under a soft seat. Coarse jute underfoot makes the velvet read softer by contrast.

## One red, and what the window does to it

Velvet is not one color. It is a color and an angle.

Look at the mattress. The front edge, turned toward the window, reads almost rose. The backs, tilted away, sit darker, close to wine. Same fabric. The pile catches light on one side and holds shadow on the other.

That is why one red is enough. Add a second red and the eye cannot tell which shift is the fabric and which is the light.

The sheers matter too. They soften the daylight, so the sheen moves slowly across the seat instead of flashing.

The self-piped bolsters at each end close the shape. The daybed stops looking like a bed with pillows. It looks like a sofa. The [velvet shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) holds the reds, and the [daybed back cushion Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/daybed-back-cushions-sofa-look/) explains the sofa look.

Where does the light enter your room, and which way will the pile face?

One red.
One rough texture underfoot.
One pale wood.

## Two stacked mattresses and an allowance nobody needed

A buyer ordered a fitted cover for two stacked mattresses, each 78¾ x 31½ in (200 x 80 cm), plus two back pillows 39⅜ in (100 cm) long at the default height and depth.

They measured the stack at 9½ in (24 cm) and asked a careful question. Should I add a little, to be safe?

The workshop said no. The measurement was standard, and the fit was its job. The fabric has a slight stretch, so a snug cover is cut a touch under the true height, not over it.

The set arrived exactly as wanted. One piece had a small patch of fraying. The workshop offered a new cover free, or a partial refund, and let the buyer choose.

The mistake avoided was the allowance. Send the true number. Let the maker do the fitting. The [Hemnes cover measuring Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/ikea-hemnes-daybed-cover-measuring/) shows each dimension, and more sets sit in the [Hemnes daybed covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/ikea-hemnes-daybed-covers/) Atlas.

## On the cutting table: the cranberry set

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Fitted Hemnes mattress cover, two back cushions, two bolsters |
| Fabric | Cranberry velvet |
| Piping | Self piping throughout |
| Edge | Box edge on the mattress cover |
| Fit | Cut about ⅜ to ¾ in (1 to 2 cm) under the measured stack height |
| Measure | True stacked height, with a photo of the tape on each dimension |
| Grounding | Jute rug, pale oak side table, sheer curtains |
| Best for | Small living rooms where the daybed is the sofa |

## Buyer questions: velvet, cotton velvet and a snug fit

**A common question:** The Hemnes set only shows corduroy colors. Can it be made in velvet?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The full Hemnes set can be made in velvet. The workshop sends its velvet color chart and asks for the exact width, depth and thickness of the cushions before quoting.

**A common question:** I'd prefer cotton velvet to polyester velvet. Is that possible?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, from a supplier range the workshop links to. Those colors have no codes, so send a picture of the one you want. Supply depends on the supplier: once it could not be sourced, and the buyer switched to a cotton-linen fabric, H12, instead.

**A common question:** Is the cover fabric stretchy? Should a cover for stacked mattresses be made smaller than what I measured?

**The workshop's answer:** The fabric is slightly stretchy, so fitted covers are made a little under the true thickness for a snug look. A stack measured at 8 to 8¼ in (20.5 to 21 cm) got a 7⅞ in (20 cm) cover, and a 9½ in (24 cm) stack would take an 8⅝ in (22 cm) cover. It only works if the measurement is right, so photograph the tape on each dimension.

> **Tailor's margin:** Photograph the tape measure on every dimension of the mattress stack; a snug velvet cover is only as good as that number.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does velvet on a daybed look lighter at the front than at the back?

Velvet has a pile that reflects light differently depending on the angle. The front edge of the mattress faces the window and catches light, so it reads paler; the back cushions tilt away and hold shadow, so the same red reads deeper.

### Should a cranberry velvet Hemnes cover have contrast piping?

Usually not. Self piping cut from the same velvet keeps the pile running unbroken around each edge, so the daybed reads as one upholstered piece. Contrast piping draws extra lines, which in a small room adds clutter rather than luxury.

### What rug suits a deep red velvet daybed in a small room?

A coarse natural weave such as jute. Its rough texture makes the velvet look softer by contrast, and its straw color keeps a strong red from feeling heavy. Pair it with pale wood rather than dark furniture nearby.
