# A cranberry velvet bench cushion, and the foam that keeps it square

*One saturated color in an undyed bedroom, dear, and under it a block of firm foam doing the quiet work. The palette first, then what's inside.*

> **The quick answer:** A foot-of-bed bench cushion works best on firm foam, because it gets perched on and sat on sideways and has to stay level and square. The workshop's seat foam is 32-density (about 2.0 lb/ft³), resilient and not memory foam. For a fixed frame, order the depth a touch under, since handmade pieces can vary 1 to 2 in.

## The bedroom palette

- Cranberry in shadow — #4c201b — The velvet pile turned away from the window.
- Lit cranberry — #8e5c4c — The same velvet where morning light catches the pile.
- Oatmeal linen — #cbc5bc — The bedding, undyed on purpose.
- Weathered pine — #b3a597 — Bench and floorboards, pulling the red toward rustic.
- Cream knit — #dad3cc — The chunky throw: loose texture beside a short pile.

## One color, one texture

Five places where one color and one texture do all the work.

1. **Self-piped edge**: Same-color piping keeps the edge tailored without a second color.
2. **Cranberry velvet top**: The one saturated color in an otherwise undyed bedroom.
3. **Chunky knit throw**: Cream knit next to red velvet gives a warm contrast of textures.
4. **Ceramic table lamp**: A pale lamp keeps the bedside calm behind the bold bench.
5. **Rustic pine bench**: Weathered pine tempers the formality of the velvet.

## One red, and what sits under it

The bed wears oatmeal linen, a cream chunky knit throw lies across it, the lamp is pale ceramic with a linen shade, and the framed prints are black and white. Then the bench: one cranberry [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) cushion, self piped, running nearly the full width of the bed. That length makes it look planned for the [bedroom](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/) rather than borrowed from the hallway. Self piping keeps the edge crisp without a second color, and weathered pine keeps the velvet from turning formal.

A bench at the foot of a bed gets perched on to pull on socks and sat on sideways. It needs a seat that stays level. The workshop's seat foam is 32-density high-comfort foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³): firm, resilient and not memory foam, so it springs back instead of holding a dent, and the box edge stays square. The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) goes further.

Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. How deep is yours, frame to frame?

## The burnt orange seat that hung over

A buyer in the US ordered a seat, a back cushion and arm pillows for a new wooden bench 25 in deep and 74 in long (64 × 188 cm), in the workshop's best-selling burnt orange velvet. The seat arrived about 27 in (69 cm) deep and overhung the frame. The workshop said a good shake would bring it to about 26 in and that handmade pieces can vary 1 to 2 in.

Once the bench was finished she loved the cushions, but the orange melted into her wood floor. The workshop offered an exchange if she returned them at her own cost. Order the depth a touch under the frame, and hold the swatch against the floor.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** How do I tell you which fabric color I want?

**The workshop's answer:** Write the fabric code, for example COR-207 for a dark green corduroy, in the personalization or order note box. Forgot? Message right after ordering; the workshop checks for missing codes before production.

**A common question:** We have kids, dogs and cats. Will any fabric stand up to claws?

**The workshop's answer:** No fabric fully resists claws. The workshop's fabrics are tightly woven without loops, and flat, tight weaves snag far less, because claws catch in looped weaves. A dedicated pet-friendly performance chart has good taupes and neutrals; order swatches so you, and your pets, can test the texture.

**A common question:** Can you make a bench cushion with a cutout or an odd shape from my sketch?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order through the custom-shape option: pick the size range by your longest and deepest measurements, upload your drawing with every measurement when asked, and write the fabric code in the personalization. The cushion is made exactly to the sketch.

> For a cushion inside a fixed frame, order the depth slightly under: one 25 in deep bench got a seat that arrived about 27 in deep.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold a velvet swatch against your floor, not your bedding: one burnt orange bench cushion vanished into a wood floor of the same tone.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is 32-density foam too hard for a bedroom bench?

It is firm, not hard. Density tells you how long foam keeps its shape; the feel is the kind you sit on rather than sink into. For a perch at the foot of a bed, that means level, square and quick to recover.

### Can a velvet bench cushion cover go in the washer?

Yes. The cover unzips, and velvet goes in the machine at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry it rather than tumble drying, and iron on low.

### Why choose self piping instead of a contrast color?

Self piping gives the edge a crisp outline without adding a second color, so one bold velvet stays the only statement in the room. It is also the simplest piping for the workshop to make.
